Note: The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) project provided reliable statistics for law enforcement. It also provided information for criminal justice students, researchers, the media, and the public. The project has been providing crime statistics since 1990. The UCR project included data from more than 8,000 cities, universities and colleges, counties, states, tribes, and federal law enforcement agencies. Various agencies voluntarily participated and submitted crime data through the state UPR project directly or to the FBI's UPR project.

The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NILSS) was designed to improve the overall quality of crime data collected by law enforcement. It would capture the details of every single crime, as well as the individual crimes within the same incident.
