Scasday Town, six o'clock in the evening.
"This burger looks pretty good."
At the entrance of a fast food restaurant in the town, Mona, holding a purchased burger and cola, sat back in the car and handed half to Luo An while eating and asking:
"What do we do next?"
This afternoon, Luo An led Mona to successfully find a clue and observed the killer's behavior over the past few hours, fully establishing his leadership in the duo, making Mona instinctively turn to Luo An when undecided.
Biting fiercely into the burger and guzzling the cola, Luo An started the car and began to turn the steering wheel:
"I just called Augustus, he sent Conrad Carter's information to all the police stations in the New York Region. The warrant for his arrest has already started."
"Good!"
Mona's eyes sparkled as she tilted her head and asked:
"How much is the bounty?"
"Five thousand dollars. But Augustus is already heading to Scasday Town with the SWAT team."
Hearing the name SWAT, the excitement on Mona's face suddenly calmed down:
"If they catch the killer, then this money..."
"Definitely has nothing to do with us."
Luo An swallowed the last bite of his burger, finished the cola, and steered the SUV onto the town's main road:
"So we need to catch Conrad before they arrive!"
"Wait a second, Luo An."
After finishing her food, Mona picked up her computer; her intelligence taking the upper hand again, she turned to speak with some concern:
"Even if we find Conrad, just the two of us might not be able to capture him, right? According to the data, Conrad is a military man with extensive combat experience... like you said, I don't want to die before earning any money."
"Capturing the killer and solving the case, we can get fifty thousand dollars offered by the New York Journalists Association, plus the five thousand dollars bounty on the warrant."
"..."
"Twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars each."
"..."
"Our salary is just two thousand dollars a month."
"... After getting the money, I want to leave the shabby rental in Brooklyn and move to a big apartment in Manhattan!"
Hearing Luo An's deep words, Mona knocked hard on her keyboard:
"Tell me, where do we go next to find Conrad?"
"Haha."
Luo An pressed the accelerator and took the car onto another road in the town, pointing at the packaged handgun Conrad left at the shooting scene:
"During the shootout at the villa entrance, I shot Conrad's left hand, causing us to pick up his handgun."
Hearing Luo An's words, Mona nodded and started browsing her computer:
"Conrad will definitely look for a place for first aid, but a household medicine kit clearly can't treat a gunshot wound, so he's likely to go to a private clinic in the town."
"Exactly."
Luo An stepped on the accelerator, and the SUV surged forward.
...
Scasday Town is not large, and there are only two private clinics. Luo An and Mona quickly arrived at the nearest one.
"Hello, FBI."
Mona and fully-armed Luo An walked into the clinic. Luo An flashed the gold FBI badge in front of the pretty girl at the front desk and asked:
"Did you treat a patient with a wounded left hand this afternoon?"
"Uh, no."
The pretty girl was a bit stunned but quickly responded:
"The clinic only treated a girl with a graze wound on her back this afternoon."
Luo An and Mona exchanged glances, guessing who the receptionist was talking about, and were about to continue questioning when suddenly the door beside the front desk opened. A middle-aged white doctor in a white coat came out with a middle-aged white woman who had a rosy complexion, exuding an overall lazy aura.
...
Luo An and Mona looked at each other, both adults, and instantly realized what the two had just experienced.
"See you the day after tomorrow, Dr. Tim."
The cheerful white woman glanced at Luo An and Mona, ignored them, blew a kiss to the doctor, and turned around, leading her pet dog towards the clinic's main door.
"See you the day after tomorrow, Ms. Yoland."
Dr. Tim, still in his white coat, nodded without changing his expression. Only after seeing the woman leave did he turn to Luo An and ask with a smile:
"What brings the two agents here?"
Ignoring the nonsense below his waist, Luo An directly asked:
"Did anything unusual happen at your clinic this afternoon, like missing medications or camera malfunctions?"
"No, everything at our clinic is normal."
Dr. Tim shook his head, explaining that his clinic, in order to protect client privacy, never installed cameras or such.
...
It's for your convenience to cheat, isn't it!
Luo An was speechless. Just as he was about to ask a few more questions, a sharp scream from Ms. Yoland suddenly came from outside:
"Where's my car? Who stole my car? Damn it, I'm going to kill that car thief!"
Hearing the scream, Mona rushed outside and asked the furious Ms. Yoland:
"Ma'am, when did you arrive at the clinic?"
"Forty minutes ago."
The very agitated Ms. Yoland, holding her pet dog, grabbed Mona's arm and shook it vigorously:
"Go find my car quickly! My husband is a Yale Member! Find the car, or I'm done!"
...
Realizing that the woman had arrived at the clinic forty minutes ago, Luo An suddenly had a thought. He quickly turned back to the clinic owner and said:
"Doctor, take me to your pharmacy now to see if anything is missing!"
"There's no need to look, Mr. Agent."
Dr. Tim's expression was even more frantic than Ms. Yoland's:
"The key to the pharmacy is lost!"
"Fu-k!"
The two and Ms. Yoland were busy in the room for forty minutes, who knows when the pharmacy key got lost.
Luo An muttered angrily and hurried out of the clinic towards the SUV, only to find Mona already sitting in the passenger seat waiting for him.
"Don't panic, Luo An."
Seeing the urgency on Luo An's face, Mona calmly said while clacking away at her keyboard:
"I just got Ms. Yoland's car model and license plate, then found out that her car is the latest model Cadillac."
"so?"
Luo An, not knowing much about cars, didn't understand what Mona meant.
"The latest model of Cadillac, considering customer safety, installs a satellite tracking system on each vehicle."
Mona smiled calmly, and as her fingers danced on the keyboard, a flurry of codes Luo An didn't understand popped up. Seconds later, Mona hit the spacebar, and a bright red, fast-moving dot appeared on the map.
"This is... on the highway north of Scasday Town."
Mona showed the computer screen to Luo An, laughing:
"It seems they haven't gotten far."
"I love you so much, Mona! Bringing you into my team was the damn right thing I did!"
Luo An laughed heartily, turned the steering wheel, stepped on the gas, and drove the SUV towards the direction of the red dot on the map.
