Chapter 32 - 32: An impossible offer [pt2]

'I knew it. The elders are not happy to have a temporary member in the guild. They all want to complain but no one is brave enough to say anything.'

Terry looked at the guild room where all the high-ranked players of their guild were gathered. They were all experts in their class and far outclassed Terry or any other player in their guild.

It was a miracle that they had not bombarded Boss Xiao for his sudden decision to take in a temporary member.

But as soon as one person complained, everyone started as well.

[Boss Xiao, what the hell? Why are you giving a newbie such power? Even people like us, who had been in this guild forever, got this treatment. I will not accept this kid as a member.]

[That is right. Just because he is a little 'good' at games does not mean he gets to play with the 'big boys.' We have a lot of other options]

[True. If you need a good player then I can introduce you to someone else who would be glad to join. There is no need for you to make an exception for anyone.]

One by one, players started complaining. And this was just the elders of the guild.

If the actual members got to know about this exception, then there could be a riot in the guild. That was what terrified Terry a lot.

The guild would be torn apart by the enraged players and the social media forms would be filled with this news as well.

Ultimately, the champion's reputation could fall and they could get sued for a lot of damage. There was a lot that could go wrong with this arrangement.

However, Boss Xiao still looked chill and not stressed about his position. His calm expression also put Terry at ease.

[Look, I ran this past by management and the big boss said that there is no problem if we have Controller in for a single guild battle before he formally accepts this offer. So please, accept this exception this time.]

The elders could not say anything when the 'management' was involved. Mainly because they were on a pay-roll by the guild to provide in-game support.

Essentially, they were employees of the 'Champions' as well and had to do as the management asked them to. Even if they did not like a decision, they had to follow through.

[I-I see. So, the management asked this of you.]

[Looks like the stress of his position finally got the big boss. But worry not, we will help him out.]

[Of course. It is only a one-time thing, right? A temporary alliance? So, we shall endure it this time.]

The elders finally came around and Terry was shocked at how easy it had been. The thing he dreaded the most did not come to pass.

[Also, I would like you all to help navigate players away from this topic if it is raised. We do not need more rumors about it in the open, right?]

Boss Xiao asked this and many of the elders felt uncomfortable. They were reminded of the foolish things they had done in their time.

[Of course not. Hey Controller, you can count on us to help you out. We will help you see the joys of a sweet victory that will bring tears to your eyes]

Somehow, Terry doubted this would happen. But he chose to keep his mouth closed. He did not need to ruin the mood of this place right now.

[Hmm, I will look forward to it.]

Olivier's words were straightforward but they lacked respect. Even Terry had to flinch at how drily Olivier had written his words.

Terry was sure that this would snub the elders for sure and they would try to go after Olivier during the next guild war.

'Man, it is going to be wild tomorrow. I hope nothing unexpected happens.'

Terry thought before he closed his game. He had been playing since he got home from school and his eyes were beginning to hurt now.

As soon as he was done closing off the PC, the room hazed and phased out of focus. Terry's eyes also felt heavier than before.

This was something that often happened to him nowadays and Terry knew what this was all leading up to.

"Well, looks like I was not able to escape the curse as well. My vision had decided to abandon its health and become worse. I will need glasses soon."

Terry whaled at his loss but sleep soon found him.

...

'Well, this was not as bad as it could have been.'

Once Terry logged off, Olivier watched the elders try and place him into the right team. But no one wanted to take him since he was a 'ticking time bomb.' These people also did now know his skill level so they were concerned about putting him in any role.

[Alright, I have decided where to put Controller. He will guard the main crystal along with our elites.]

[!!!!]

[?????]

[No way. We cannot put a rookie on such a high-risk job.]

Cries of denial fell on deaf ears from all sides. The whole chat was enraged at the special treatment Olivier was being given.

Even some of the elders, the highest-skilled players in the guild, had never had such a great opportunity.

Being assigned to the crystal guard was like being announced as 'one of the best' in the guild. It was a fight every time an opportunity like this arrived.

[Boss Xiao, think of the children. What would they say if they saw such disregard for our rules and customs? You cannot betray their trust this easily. Those kids fought hard to earn this opportunity.]

[Besides, we still cannot be sure of the controller's skills. We do not know how he plays and how well he will be able to defend us. I am against this as well.]

Players all around the hall voiced their concerns as well as their opinions on having Olivier play the defense for their side.

Normally, Olivier would have cared but today he could not bring himself to care.

[Hey, if you do not want me here, then can I go now? I need to sleep since it is my bead time.]

And by that Olivier meant that his body was about to give up on him and fall asleep. He could not keep his eyes open for long.

[See, he is just a kid. We cannot allow such a heavy responsibility to fall on a kid's shoulder. What if he needs to defend the crystal and falls asleep in the middle of it all? I will not allow this to happen.]

One of the elders protested very loudly. And for some reason, those words jabbed Olivier's tired brain and he take offense.

[I will let you know that I am a responsible person and can beat you anytime. If you do not believe me, we can also duke it out.]

Olivier's hand typed this sentence faster than his brain could keep up.

Before he realized it, the words were already out and the man on the other side of the screen grinned.

[Bring it on kid. It is time I teach you a lesson.]
