Chapter 55 - Another failed attempt

Sitting with his legs crossed on the fields in his backyard, Agnar was with his two friends and relative. He looked bored and just stared at the two who kept bickering. Raymond found a place to rest and watch what was happening. Along with Agnar, he was also bored.

"I thought you said this was certain to work and all that nonsense, what is happening now?" One-eye said, almost shouting at Demas.

"I was only following what was written in the books, that's all," Demas retorted. "Besides, you agreed with me, so why are you yelling at me now?!"

"I was drunk, I wouldn't know better. Didn't you find it odd that I agreed with you right away?! What did you even mean by missing link?"

"It must be the remaining factor. It is the missing link, I am sure of it! We must be missing something."

"Are you two done? Can I leave now?" Agnar raised a question.

All they had been doing for a while since their tenth attempt to break the curse that had proved futile, was banter aimlessly back and forth. Raymond and Agnar both were tired of watching of them.

"No, you're not going anywhere!" One-eye shouted.

"I just remembered, I don't have to ask for your permission to do anything," Agnar said with a yawn and got up only to be pushed back down by a kick from One-eye.

"I said you are going nowhere!" He shouted. "Not until I have fixed this."

Agnar who was flung back and to the ground got back up and responded with a punch to the other's face. "What makes you think I will do as you say?" He asked.

"Because it's for your own good!" One-eye said getting back up on his feet. His hand was on his jaw as he checked if it was broken. Receiving a hit from Agnar no matter how much the strength was dwindled still hurt greatly and could easily break one's bones.

"My own good? I've been here all morning getting tortured by your failed attempts and then you kick me, how is that for my own good?!" Agnar responded clearly pissed. Every try to remove the spell caused a large amount of pain and he had to bear it ten times. Still, none of it worked.

"Can you at least be grateful I am trying to help?"

"I am grateful you haven't killed me yet."

"The curse was placed by him and we know how much power he put into it, making it almost unbreakable. The spell had been used multiple times with no results. Then there was the addition of the beast part that actually reduced it. But, the beast is almost impossible to find. Now there is a word we have been missing from the reversal spell and it still hasn't worked and is instead more painful than with the other tries.." Raymond started rambling as they spoke causing them to listen, but he was stopped by One-eye.

"Where are you going with this?" One-eye asked.

"Just go straight to the point. Or did you just want to count the failures?" Agnar said with a look of annoyance and boredom.

"What I'm saying is..."

"I'm leaving," Agnsr sudden spoke and turned to leave.

"I said you are going nowhere, you idiot!" One-eye hit him on the head and pulled him back.

"I've told you, you are no one to stop me!" Agnar turned to land a hit of his own.

"I think we should let him finish," Demas said pushing both men back. Agnar looked at Demas' arm and he immediately removed it from his chest. One-eye pushed off his arm off his body.

"Sorry Sir Raymond, what were you saying?" Demas asked only to find the other sleeping by the wall. His face showed one of disbelief and his eyes twitched a bit. 'What sort of men are these?' He wondered.

"Wake up, you moron!" Agnar and One-eye shouted simultaneously at Raymond. Hearing the loud voices close to him, he jerked awake and looked at them. He then yawned and stretched his limbs and got back up on his feet.

He looked at all three men staring at him in wait. Two out of the three were enraged. "Why are you three looking at men?" He asked.

"Finish your sentence!" One-eye and Agnar yelled startling Raymond a bit.

"I was talking?" He said and placed his hand on his chin.

"That's it! I'm leaving," Agnar began walking out. He was then stopped. It felt like his robe was being pulled from behind. He looked back and found One-eye holding onto it.

"You were talking about Agnar's curse and how to remove it.." Demas said trying to refresh Raymond's memory.

"Why are you touching me?!" Agnar yelled at One-eye.

"I'm holding onto your robe, not touching you, you moron," One-eye said.

"Can you two just shut up and listen?!" Demas shouted at them both. He had enough of their noisemaking. Agnar pulled his robe from One-eye's arm.

"If you want to keep paying attention to them, you'll get a headache." Raymond yawned.

Returning his attention to Raymond, Demas asked, "About Agnar's curse, what were you saying?"

"Agnar's curse?" Raymond rubbed his beard in thought once we more. "Oh yeah! You idiots keep trying and failing to break it," he laughed. "It is truly amusing to watch you confidently do rubbish."

"Is that all?" Demas asked.

"Is there more to say?" Raymond asked.

"I told those two to stop fighting, he made Agnar wait, you better have more to say," Demas pulled on Raymond's clothes with fury in his eyes.

Raymond tilted his head and had a nonchalant look on his face. The look faded when he looked behind Demas and saw two men whom would smash his head in once Demas moves.

Sweat beads formed on his head and he pulled from Demas with a nervous smile. "Oh yes, the curse," he said and cleared his throat. "Well, all I wanted to say was..." he drifted off thinking hard for an answer and found one. "Rather than trying them separately and failing, why not do them at once. The spell, the beast powder and the 'missing link' as you call it," he said.

"That is a good idea," One-eye said.

"We could definitely do that, the only problem though is getting the beast," said Demas. The three men then turned at once and looked at Agnar.

"Why can't you three help do it?" He asked not liking the idea of going on a search again.

"You are the one who's cursed, you have to do it," One-eye said. "I am not interested in chasing beasts."

"Neither am I," Raymond concurred.

"You know I'm not strong enough to face a beast of that manner," Demas gave his own excuse. He was strong enough to take on the beast, but not strong enough to do it unharmed unlike the three men who could take it down in one hit.

"Fine!" Agnar said. "But, if I'm leaving, I'm taking my booze with me."

"How can you possibly take them all with you?" One-eye questioned.

"Watch me," Agnar said and swiftly went into his home.

"Is he being serious?" Raymond asked. He and One-eye both ran into the house to stop Agnar. They had to stop him at all costs. Whenever he went out, he always made sure to return with a large quantity of booze, whether or not there was some left never affected the quantity he would bring back with him. He always bought the best tasting booze.

For this singular reason, Raymond and One-eye were always at his home whether he was around or not. They couldn't have him taking them all with him. It would mean they would no longer and would have to buy booze if they wanted it. They couldn't let that happen. To them, there was nothing tasted better than free booze.
