Chapter 1 - Meeting the Handsome Devil - 1

A therapist and counselor shared the floor of Raven's office with another therapist and best friend; Dominique Martin. Where Raven worked outside of the LAPD. Raven's office was on the top floor of the building just next door to Dr. Martin. Raven reads Dante's Inferno while sitting in a white wooden rolling chair with a soft tan pillow on the seat. Raven reads in comfort as she crosses her legs under her.

The books on her office shelves are filled with mysteries, horror, criminal psychology, and other criminal topics. They have no imagination like romance or fantasy. On the left wall of her office was a display of certificates and degrees of her work. The degrees matched her license for therapy and federal work in the name of Ravana Moriarty. As a result of the criminal history of her family, Raven decided to start over and go to school to help the people who had been ruined by her family.

Despite being only 20, Raven has received a Ph.D. in criminal psychology, a bachelor's degree in criminal profiling, and her license for counseling agents. Raven's supposed emotionlessness allows her to keep a detached emotional state from every case she works on. Nothing has ever distracted her from getting the job done. In her role as a therapist, Raven displays a lot of empathetic, kind, and understanding characteristics that differ from her role as a detective. In her experience as a detective and a therapist, Empathizing with criminals never failed her. Unless they were members of the Moriarty family. There was no fooling the Morarity family in the British underworld. They were master manipulators. Elites of their craft, if you will. But only one person fooled them: Raven.

Dr. Martin's character exhibited a more emotional approach with every client she interacted with. Her presence was comforting, reminiscent of the mother Raven never had. Once Raven began working with the LAPD, many regarded her as a freak of nature—a psychopathic individual who thrived on the thrill of each case. However, this perception was far from the truth; only a select few understood the true nature of Raven's personality.

Raven's right brow twitched as soft footsteps echoed in the hallway outside her office, interrupting her thoughts about the book she was reading. Before the person could knock on her door, Raven said in a monotone voice, "You don't have to knock to come in, Dom." With a small chuckle, Dominique walked into the office, wearing a bright and kind smile. Dr. Martin asked, holding out a cup holder containing two cups. Raven pushed her desk with her right hand to help turn her rolling chair around to meet Dominique's gentle gaze. "Two teaspoons of sugar?" Raven inquired as she observed Dominique closely.

Dominique wore a white dress shirt paired with a black coverlet and matching black dress pants. Dominique also opted for black flats, making it more comfortable for her to walk around, especially since she needed to stand for an extended period. Dominique was accustomed to Raven's deductions. Although Raven could be blunt and overly crude, Dominique did not perceive her as an emotionless sociopath; instead, she saw a broken child yearning to be heard in a world that had consistently failed her."Of course! It's the only coffee you enjoy, after all," Dominique said, handing Raven a brown coffee cup. Raven noticed that Dominique had a shaky balance and unsteady hands. Raven caught a whiff of perfume as if it had been applied not long ago, mingled with a lingering scent of syrup. Dominique's hair was styled in a messy bun, appearing recently dried but still damp in some spots. Her makeup looked freshly applied, yet it seemed to conceal her true emotions beneath the layers. Raven observed that Dominique's eyes were puffier and redder than usual, indicating that she had been crying before arriving."Hmm." Raven hummed as she took a sip of her coffee, feeling refreshed and more relaxed as the warm liquid touched her tongue. Once she gathered her thoughts, Raven considered a gentler way to address her concerns with Dominique. "Dom," she said after swallowing the coffee. Her voice was calm yet firm. Dominique tensed at the way Raven pronounced her name. With a nervous smile, she braced herself to hear what Raven had to say. "If you have problems with your coworkers, talk to the higher-ups. You need to stop being so kind to those who are only out to sabotage your career," Raven advised, taking another sip of her coffee. "I know, I know..." Dominique replied, looking down at the amber wooden floor. Raven's voice softened with sympathy. "I understand that you only see the good in people, but not everyone deserves your compassion. If you continue to allow them to bully you, it will only get worse." Raven concluded, her tone gentle. She had always been gentle with Dominique; she had never raised her voice at her. "It's okay to report them. Don't feel guilty for the actions of others. You're a therapist, after all. You must take care of yourself for the sake of your clients," Raven said softly, meeting Dominique's ocean-blue eyes with her own heterochromatic red and white ones.Raven noticed a pattern in one of Dominique's clients' abuse. The flirtation, the bruises—Dominique had always focused on helping those whom she thought were lost causes. However, Raven knew better. She recognized that Dominique was an intelligent woman; if only Dominique would speak out against abuse instead of trying to please everyone."You're right. I will do that now," Dominique said with her signature soft smile and a tone of understanding. She recognized the wisdom Raven was trying to express; she had tolerated abuse from her clients for far too long. "Thank you," Raven replied with a small, sidelong smile as she watched her friend leave her office. Raven exaggeratedly turned her wooden chair around, only to hit her forehead against her desk. "Something feels off today..." she thought aloud, her expression blank as she returned to her thoughts. Raven's instincts were telling her that something in the world was about to change her life forever—something she had neither seen nor been able to comprehend. For the first time, Raven found herself at war with her own mind, struggling to understand what her instincts were trying to convey. Suddenly, a small vibration emanated from the right side of her desk. Raven's phone was ringing, but it felt as if time had stopped; her phone was frozen on the caller's name. Everything around her was silent—too silent. As Raven stood up from her chair, she realized that an invisible force seemed to be compelling her to remain still.Raven stumbled to the window, eager to take a good look outside, only to find the world around her frozen in place. No one was moving. The birds in the sky were suspended mid-air, and the cars on the streets were halted mid-drive. "What... the... hell..." Raven uttered slowly, as if her lungs were being compressed with each word. In a matter of moments, time resumed its normal flow, causing Raven to collapse to the floor. She panted heavily, trying to regain her breath, unsure whether what she had witnessed was real.Raven's phone vibrated once more on her desk. She slowly stood up from the floor, attempting to calm her nerves as she walked to her desk. Raven tapped the green phone icon to answer the call. "Hello?" She said in a monotone voice, trying not to reveal her concern about who was on the line. "Go to the club in front of the Sunset Tower Hotel," Raven'scoworker instructed. "Wait, the Lux building?" Raven asked, intrigued. "Yes, your crime scene is waiting for you," Coworker replied before hanging up. "YES! Finally, a distraction!" Raven exclaimed excitedly as she grabbed her phone and keys, rushing out of her office to tackle her new case.
