Chapter 9 - Taking the Day Off - 1

Lucifer greeted Raven with a soft smile. "Welcome back, Detective." Raven's expression was genuine, a kind glow in her eyes as she looked at Lucifer. However, she appeared pale, the heart monitor beeping at a faster pace. Her smile and chuckle seemed forced, betraying her apparent fear as she lay in the hospital bed.

"You don't like hospitals?" Lucifer asked curiously, gently holding Raven's hand, reluctant to let go of her touch.

"You seem so concerned for someone who claims to be the devil," Raven said with a chuckle, relaxing slightly as Lucifer's hand met hers. "I don't see that as a bad thing," she added with a small, closed-eye smile.

Suddenly, Raven's expression shifted to one of concern. "Wait... Why are you not in the same position as me? I watched him shoot you..." She quickly changed the subject, more worried about Lucifer than her own condition.

Lucifer let out a small laugh. "You're really struggling with this whole immortality thing." He noticed the heart monitor's rhythm start to slow, matching Raven's calming heartbeat.

Lucifer gazed at Raven, a gentle smile gracing his lips. "What is it about hospitals that frightens you?" he inquired, his curiosity evident. This question prompted Raven to loosen her hold on his hand. "That's a tale for another day. You may have been my savior, but I don't know you well enough to share that kind of vulnerability," she replied softly, her eyes avoiding his. Her voice was tender, as if the mere mention of the topic could shatter her composure.

"Some stories are best kept behind closed doors until the moment is right to reveal them," Raven added, a hint of irritation lacing her soft tone as she met Lucifer's gaze.

He simply shook his head in response, a gentle gesture of understanding. Raven's eyes drifted to the IVs in her arms, and she began to remove them, triggering an alarm from the monitor. Annoyance flickered across her face as she disconnected the device and rose from the bed. A sudden, intense headache hit her, causing her to pause, struggling to gather her thoughts and steady herself. While the pain was manageable, its abruptness hinted at possible dehydration or a need for food.

Lucifer watched Raven with interest as she stood quietly for a moment. Taking a deep breath, she attempted to relax her tense muscles. With a newfound confidence, she turned and walked toward him, though a trace of discomfort was evident in her movements. She gently placed her right hand on his cheek and spoke softly, "Thank you for saving me." Her smile was warm and genuine, and her raven-red eyes locked onto his in a way that would linger in his memory.

"Sorry, I didn't quite catch that," Lucifer teased, leaning in closer and cupping his ear with his left hand. "You heard me," Raven replied, playfully rolling her eyes and letting her right arm fall to her side. "Besides, you're far too fascinating to let go," he added, rising from his chair, captivated by every little gesture she made.

Raven walked over to the window, glancing outside to check the time. As she caught her reflection in the glass, she turned to see Lucifer, who looked perplexed. Although she couldn't pinpoint the reason for his confusion, she sensed it was unusual for him. Lucifer was astonished by how Raven had enchanted him, stirring a desire to be close to her and feel her touch. "Could you take me to my office?" she asked kindly, noticing how quickly his body language changed. "Of course," he replied, offering her a gentle smile.

"I have a friend who would be worried, so please don't get all weird about it," Raven said jokingly as she started walking out of the hospital room. Lucifer followed behind her, his curiosity piqued once again. "Who is Maverick?" he asked, the question coming out of nowhere and causing Raven to tense slightly.

"Maverick was a friend I lost in the past," Raven replied softly, her gaze fixed on the ground as she walked.

"Was he more than just a friend?" Lucifer asked gently, sensing the sensitivity of the subject. "I don't mean to pry, but you called me Maverick a few times before I could take you to the hospital. I'm just curious, but I don't want to upset you."

Raven looked up at Lucifer, her eyes conveying a world of pain that she seemed to be trying to hide. "I'll tell you about it, if you're willing to share something about yourself in return. I'm a therapist, and I'd like to learn more about you as well, Luci, before I open up to you. Does that sound fair?"

Lucifer responded with a smile that seemed to melt Raven's defenses. "As you wish, Detective."

Lucifer was being genuine in his concern for Raven, never once joking about the topic. However, there was a crucial thing that both Raven and Lucifer were missing.

When Raven ripped off the IVs in her arm, the panic alarm went off, summoning the nurses. "Oh, I forgot - we're escaping the hospital," Raven said casually, tapping her chin as if deep in thought.

Lucifer asked with a small smile, curious about her calm demeanor. "What do you mean?"

"Nurses will be rushing to find me. This isn't the first time I've been in a hospital. I completely despise the place, so I normally skip treatments and hospitalize myself in my office. Now that I'm injured, I'm forced to take a day off, knowing my friend called my lieutenant," Raven chuckled lightly as she made a sharp right turn, grabbing Lucifer's wrist to lead him towards a window at the end of the hall. "Hope you don't mind a bit of a run before we get to the parking lot," she said excitedly.

Lucifer looked at Raven curiously. "A run?" he said with a wide grin, watching her with fascination. However, beneath his curiosity lay confusion as Raven removed her hospital gown. Bandages wrapped around her chest and arms, even though she had been shot in the left shoulder and upper arm. The bandages covered her arms, chest, and up to the middle of her neck. She didn't need a bra, as the bandages kept her chest steady. Raven still wore the black shorts she wore at Jimmy's wedding.

"Remember when I told you my body could withstand extreme temperatures?" Raven said with a smile as she removed the cast. "Indeed I do," Lucifer replied, tilting his head curiously.

Raven opened the window and hopped out with ease. "I hope you can catch up!" she yelled, sliding down the roof and jumping to the one below. Lucifer's eyes widened as he followed her out the window

As Raven landed on the roof, she chuckled lightly and did a small roll to avoid straining her legs. Now on the third floor, she kept her gaze fixed on the ground as she continued running. Lucifer matched her movements, but found it more challenging than he expected. Raven's disciplined control of her body allowed her to withstand the obstacles, her graceful motions belying the extreme pain.

Lucifer looked down to land, but tripped and fell hard on his back. However, he quickly rushed up without a hint of pain and sprinted to catch up to Raven, a wide grin on his face. "My humans are quite fascinating," he said, watching as Raven picked up speed with a happy smile.
