Chapter 8 - On the Road to Recovery II

As it turns out, our worlds are almost at an identical level of technological and scientific sophistication, minus a slight difference in the minutiae of certain fields and when certain technologies came about. And despite the names of inventors and minor details, 2 + 2 still equals 4 and the laws of physics are still the same. So I still have hope for my grades in writing, science, and math.

When I'm not sleeping or forced to do my physical therapy, I stretch my legs by going over to speak with Kira. Who seems quite laissez e faire about her situation, we would play cards or Oligarchy, this world's version of Monopoly.

"Ha! I win again!" Kira touts while she's receiving her treatment. A transfusion of blood followed by an IV of essential vitamins and minerals that she's been lacking due to her condition.

"I swear you're cheating! There's no way you can win 7 hands in a row!" I shout indignantly.

"Don't be such a sore loser." Kira laughs taking all the chips and cookies we had been betting with, "Besides, it's only cheating if you get caught!"

"I knew it!" I shout stealing back a chocolate chip cookie.

"Hey! No fair! At least take the raisin oatmeal cookies!" Kira pouts while staring at me like I'm the worst villain in the world.

"Can't help it, I got a pretty fierce sweet tooth." I say back, savoring the cookie with a smirk.

"Ha, I see you two are getting along." Damon says from the doorway, "Kiranne, it's not sporting to cheat against an opponent you can beat on a fair playing field."

"Ouch, I'm not that bad at poker…" I start to say before they both give me a look, "Or… Maybe I am?" I give up trying to defend my gambling honor.

"Yeah, I would say stick to your day job… But… That would imply you actually had a job," Damon says with a smirk before ruffling both mine and Kira's hair, he then stops and pulls out a couple of textbooks from his bag beginning our lesson while Kira takes a nap after her treatment.

"I still don't understand why we can't just use my tablet," I complain while pulling the social studies textbook over and opening it to where we last left off. I'd been using tablets for the last two decades and books are so… Ancient… And it took me a couple of days just to get used to this outdated software.

"Because I love the feeling of paper in my hands, and as your tutor, you study how I tell you." Damon says returning to our lesson.

"So, while the Euro Powers were preoccupied, the Christian African Kingdom of Mali was allowed to grow and prosper. Consolidating their rule over the majority of the Central and Southern African Continent. So much so, that when word of the discovery of Guunisa (Australia) spread, Mali along with the warring Gupta and Tamil empires (India), were the only ones able to contest the new land. As such a bloody war broke out, leaving the Continent of Guunisa as nothing more than a battleground for a proxy war between the three powers plus the native Guunisian Aboriginals. Now let's go over Asia-" Damon begins to go into the second half of his lecture when his phone vibrates breaking his concentration.

"Sorry, that's my job calling. Looks like we'll have to continue this later." Damon apologizes starting to leaving the room.

"No problem, office man, keep up the excellent work as a corporate cog." I joke, pretending to believe that he's just some lowly office worker like he's been portraying himself to be.
