My eyes narrow in concern as I stare at her, "What condition is that?" I ask.
"You let me help you investigate who's after your family. It's so boring here and I don't want my friend to fight this on her own." Kira says, giving a mischievous grin.
"Ha!" I laugh before agreeing, "Okay, thank you… And… When we're alone… Can you call me Lilith? I always thought that was a pretty name." I admit to her.
"No problem, Lilith." Kira says with a smile before a knock at the door interrupts us.
*Knock, knock, knock.*
"Excuse me, is Miss Kiranne in there with you, Mister Lance?" I hear a voice ask from the other side as I rush to get my contact lens back in place before answering.
"Yes, we're just visiting! One second!" I say before I whisper, "You better hurry and unlock the door."
Causing Kira to hobble as best she can to the door before opening it for the doctor, a middle-aged African American man who looks at my disheveled appearance and the presence of Kira before raising an eyebrow and saying, "Miss Kiranne. It is time for your treatment."
"Lance, do you think you can make it over there?" Kira asks. Nervous about getting her treatment alone.
I wince slightly but manage to stand, "I wouldn't miss it." I say giving her a reassuring smile before going over with them.
Once Kira is hooked up, the doctor starts the process and I pull out a deck of cards and we begin playing a game I can win… Go, fish.
After a few minutes of losing to Kira, again. I hear a knock at the door and I see Damon.
"Am I interrupting?" Damon asks before coming in.
"Not at all, I'm tired of getting my butt kicked." I sigh as a nurse comes in behind him with a bottle of medicine labeled Atenolol, which I recall is a common brand of beta-blocker used for treating heart conditions, which I suffered from after all the stress I had towards the end of my last life.
"Miss Kiranne, it is time to take your vitamins." The nurse says with a smile as she approaches.
But I grab the orderly's hand before she can give the pills to Kira.
"Lance?" Kira and Damon say in confused unison.
"Is there a reason you're calling a beta blocker a vitamin and giving it to someone with an unidentified illness?" I say, calling the nurse out on her actions as I tighten the grip I have on her with my left hand.
"I think you are mistaken, Mr. Lance. These are vitamins I assu-" The nurse tries to explain herself before I interrupt.
"Atenolol… Side effects of poisoning by it include low blood pressure resulting in lightheadedness and fainting as well as dangerously low pulse." I say aloud with my eyes locked on the nurse.
As I'm holding her in place I feel the temperature in the room drop to just above freezing as I catch the look on Damon's face out of the corner of my eye and I freeze just like the room…
'The Demon' lives, the detached rage, and merciless fury radiate off of him like some incomprehensible force filling the room with dread, sending me back to when I had to stare into his green soulless eyes when he crushed my mother's company right in front of me.
And my grip loosens on the nurse…
