Chapter 7 - I need to know who my parents are

TRISTAN

I walked out of Tanya's room a few minutes after she went to meet Edwardo, leaving Mia to regain herself. I'm sure Edwardo has an assignment for Tanya.

My mind went to the boy who was killed today, he was still very young. I wonder where his parents are and how they would be feeling at the moment for losing a son?

I exhaled loudly as I laid on my bed feeling so tired and bored. Tanya isn't here to keep me company and make me laugh.

I took off my necklace, gently staring at it as usual. I keep staring at it but I have no clue of what it means, 'JK', how I wish I knew what that stands for and why it is on my neck. It would have been better if it was a picture of my mother or father or better still, a name I can use to trace them, but this is just a random letter, close to meaningless and it's making me go crazy cause I believe I have a family somewhere.

During my numerous assignments, I have seen a lot of teenagers like me going to school, living a normal life with their parents. They have someone to talk to, someone to give them good advice. I wish I had the same. Living an ordinary life where I can also learn freely however unfortunately for me, I am nowhere in that category, I can only wish to be like them but I can never be them because my wish is far from my reach.

I got up from my bed heading to Edwardo's personal house to see if he had any clue about where my parents are. I actually asked him to help me search for them since he wouldn't let me search for them myself. I hope he has a positive reply for me. I wish I knew them or I could see them even if it's just once or from afar, I just want to know who they are and to know if they are even searching for me at all...

"Is Edwardo in?" I asked one of his guards who was standing at the entrance.

"Yes he is, but you have to wait because he has a visitor now," he said.

"Alright," I said standing beside him then he brought out a pack of cigarettes and put one in his mouth.

"Do you care for some?" He asked, stretching the pack to me.

"No, I will pass." I said glaring at his hand.

"You are no saint, yet you pretend like you are," he said with a scoff.

"I have no answer for you," I simply said, fixing my gaze elsewhere.

I'm really popular here, and a lot of people envy me because I'm the closest to Edwardo, something most of them couldn't achieve. I can see him anytime I want, announced or unannounced. Others can only see him when he has an announcement to make or when he calls them in for an assignment.

"I will make sure I keep to your advice," I heard Edwardo's voice as he walked out with his visitor.

From the look on their faces, one could tell that they were discussing something important, and the look his visitor gave me made me feel like they actually talked about me.

"You are here, Tristan." Edwardo said with a fake smile.

"Yeah, morning boss." I said, still staring at the man, he cleared his throat awkwardly and turned to Edwardo.

"I will be on my way now," he said.

"You can leave and thanks once again for the advice," Edwardo said as the man turned to leave.

"Come. Let's go in, Tristan." Edwardo said, then walked ahead of me.

"So, what do you want?" He asked as we settled on a chair.

"I want to know if there is any news about my parents?" I said calmly.

"Your parents?" He said questioningly and I nodded though I find his tone absurd.

"Yes, my parents. You promised to help me search for them," I said.

"I'm not disputing that fact, I made the promise to you and I must fulfill it. You have done a lot for me and I will never lie to you," He said.

"But at this stage, I expect you to have forgotten about them. They didn't search for you but you are the one who keeps searching for them and that's not supposed to be so, my boy."

"I know but still I want to know," I said.

"I understand. Well, I did make my findings and just like other times I found nothing. It's like they don't exist and I even tried using the letters on your necklace but it's still the same. Nothing," he said.

"You mean there are still no traces?" I asked, trying to hide my sadness and anger and he nodded in confirmation.

Placing a hand on my shoulders: "Forget about them Tristan. You have all you need here so what do you need them for? This is your life, you should embrace it and forget about them even if they are alive. I'm sure they are living their lives to the fullest without worrying about you so you too live yours, my boy."

"I just want to know them. Is that too much to ask for? I don't care if they search for me or not. I just want to know who they are so all these questions in my head should go away," I said somewhat stubbornly.

"Am I not trying my best to be a father to you? I give you all you want, don't I? forget about them and see me as your family though I am already just that you don't want to accept it yet," he said.

"I know, but I still need to know them."I said adamantly, I wasn't ready to listen to him, he is trying to change my mind and I'm sure he is lying about some things.

"Forget them Tristan, you have great potential and you are a good asset to me, one of the best, remain here with me," he said dismissively.

"Thanks, I will be heading back to my room now," I said standing up.

"That's the spirit. Live your life here and what better life can you get than this?" He said as I walked out.

He is lying to me, the look on his face says it all, I'm sure he stopped searching for them, he is only lying to me for his selfish interest…

"Hey," Tanya said, tapping my shoulder.

"Are you okay?"She asked, looking worried.

"No. I don't think I am," I sighed then turned to face her." When did you get back?"

"Few minutes ago, but his guards said he doesn't want any disturbances, I will check on him later," she said.

"Okay," I replied simply walking to my room as she trailed behind me.

"So what is bothering you," she asked as soon as we got to my room.

"Edwardo said I shouldn't search for my parents anymore, I have a feeling that he never even searched for them in the first place."

"That's possible. I have an idea, you know we can't really trust Edwardo for such. He wouldn't want to leave you or create a distraction for you by finding your parents," she said.

"So what do you suggest I do?" I asked curiously. She is very smart and I'm sure her idea would be nice.

"Hire someone else to help you find your parents. A different person entirely," she suggested.

"How do I do that when we are always here?" I asked.

"Very simple, come close," she said..
