Chapter 9 - I do not need them anymore

TANYA

"How was it, Tris?" I asked Tristan as we both sat to eat in his room.

He has been unusually quiet since he came back with Edwardo and it's making me worried.

"What is that?" He asked, staring at me curiously. From the look on his face it's obvious he has forgotten about our discussion from this morning and it is still unusual.

"Are you being serious here? Like you really mean you have forgotten about what we discussed?" I asked in awe.

"I can't really remember. Please remind me," he said.

"You are unbelievable." I huffed in anger.

"Anyways. Have you been able to get a private investigator that would help you search for your parents?"I asked and the look on his face changed to something I can't explain.

"No, I haven't because I don't have to do that anymore," he said coldly.

I stared at him like he had suddenly grown horns. He was the same person that told me he wanted to search for them this morning and now he is telling me that it is of no use.

"What?" He asked, staring at me in discomfort as soon as he noticed my intense gaze on him.

"Why are you staring at me that way?" He asked again.

"Why wouldn't I stare at you?" I asked.

"Why should you?" He asked, still looking confused.

"You just said there is no need to search for your parents. So why wouldn't I stare at you?" I said.

"Yes,I said that, so?" He asked nonchalantly.

"You were almost crying this morning when you were telling me you wanted to search for them so why the sudden change of mind?" I asked curiously and he signed softly.

"I was just being stupid this morning I don't really need them in my life. Afterall I have been doing perfectly fine without them all these years," he said, chewing his food slowly.

"Wow! So can you tell me what and who changed your mind and don't dare say nothing because I know it is something or someone that changed your mind," I said, dropping my spoon.

"Don't worry about that, Tanya. Let's talk about something else," he said in a dismissive tone.

"I won't change the topic, Tris. Not until you tell me why you decided to drop the search for your parents," I said adamantly.

"I will tell you about it some other time, but definitely not now."

"Why not now?" I asked but he kept quiet and faced his food like he didn't hear my question.

"Alright. I won't talk about it anymore, I believe you will tell me when you are ready," I said in surrender.

"I sure will and thanks for forgetting about that for now," he said, heaving a sigh of relief.

"I just hope you giving up on the search doesn't have anything to do with Edwardo because you have been acting weird since you came back with him," I said observing the look on his face but it was void.

He is very good at hiding the expression on his face, one could hardly know what is going on in his mind.

"How was your mission, Tanya?" He asked, completely ignoring my question.

I just said something now and he didn't even bother to argue or add or subtract from it or has he suddenly gone deaf? I asked myself angrily.

"Why are you staring at me like that? I just asked a question," he said, tapping my shoulder lightly.

"My assignment was fine,"I replied, looking away from him.

"Really? Tell me more about it. What did you do there?" He asked, moving closer to me with curiosity.

"I will tell you, but that will be some other time, definitely not now." Isaid, quoting his words back to him.

"Are you being serious now or is that a joke?" He said in awe as he didn't expect that I would say such.

If it were to be on a normal day, I would tell him everything without hesitation but now, I need him to have a taste of his own medicine and see how it feels. I thought about eating the remaining food on the plate.

"Stop with the joke Tanya and start talking, I want to hear everything in an orderly manner," he demanded, smiling.

"I will tell you, but not today Tristan, let's talk about something else." I stood my ground.

"Stop it Tanya, it's no longer funny," he said angrily.

If there is something Tristan hates, that is keeping secrets of any kind, he always wants to know everything going on in the life of someone very close to him.

"So you don't like it right? The way you feel now is the same way I'm also feeling. Why will you keep things from me? Someone you consider a friend. It hurts," I said, getting emotional and he signed, taking his head away as he couldn't say anything.

"It's okay if you want to hide things from me, I'm okay with it," I said getting up.

"I don't want to put your life in danger, Tanya. What I'm keeping is more than me and even you, if I'm permitted to tell you, you know I won't hesitate to do that," he said calmly.

I paused a bit and stared at him. He was being sincere, I could tell. I have known him for so long to know when he is being truthful. Is it possible that Edwardo threatened him? But what exactly would Edwardo threaten him with?? I asked myself but couldn't find a suitable answer.

"Please, try to understand me on this, okay?" He asked gently and I nodded in understanding.

I sat down again and we went on talking about different things but I was still curious, I still wanted to know what Edwardo told him or threatened him about to make him look like this, he looked scared of maybe losing someone close to him.

TRISTAN

It is not something I can tell anyone about, I have to keep it to myself only, I wouldn't want to put Tanya in danger by telling her what I saw or what Edwardo told me.

I promised him to keep it a secret since that is what he wanted and about my parents, I just feel I don't need to know them because they would be of no use to me even if they are alive. I have been living fine without them so I don't even need them anymore. The people here are my family and what I do is my passion, no one can take it away from me, ever!
