Chapter 40 - I'll Be There

"Miss Nicola Brownwitch's squad has already been decided and won't need to announce her choice."

What was this all about? I had no clue. But I could guess why Captain Raphael was so down. Nicola did say that she was going to participate in a dangerous task and it was very possible that her nagging aunt was worried.

Next, the short person called out my name. I went onto the stage and knelt down like everyone else.

"Mr. Tony Schleider, which squad do you wish to join?"

I felt really ashamed to tell him that I could only tell it in front of the captains and the master.

"Um…um…"

"Yes, Mr. Schleider?"

The whole crowd was very silent. I was so very nervous.

"Um…I am not supposed to say my choice in front of anyone but the captains and the master"

"Excuse me?"

I heard the distant crowd jeering at me. Some even said that I was looking for attention. To be honest, I was expecting worse, so I managed to cope with it. Meanwhile, the captains and the master seemed curious. The shirt person came forward.

"Mr. Schleider! You may be the top performer of this year but that doesn't give you the right to be arrogant in front of everyone, especially the master!"

"I'm sorry, but I was told to do so?"

"By whom?"

I looked at master.

"Uh…I'm not supposed to say"

The short person seemed furious. He almost started to scold me but the master saved me right on time.

"Enough, let him come forward"

He seemed to have understood that it was my dad who made me do this. I almost wish I never did it. I hope this pays off. I went near the captains. Captain Neil spoke.

"Kid, you better be saying the truth."

This pressured me a lot.

"Now now, Neil. There is no need to be so threatening. So, Mr. Schleider, what did you have to say to us?" said the captain greatly comforting me.

"Um…well…"

The captains looked at me doubtfully.

"My choice is the Southern Legion"

All the captains gasped. The jeering crowd stopped immediately. They seemed extremely curious. The long line of young annihilators was also curiously staring at me. I wondered why the captains gasped. Was this southern legion a bad place? I noticed that the master didn't gasp like his subordinates. But he still was fairly surprised. His surprised face then turned into seriousness.

"Mr. Schleider, do you realize what you are asking?"

"I don't sir, but I trust him"

"You are basically asking for your death!" added Captain Ann.

"I strongly forbid this!" said Captain Neil.

"Please, I have to join."

I absolutely had to join. After my dad said that I had to join the Southern legion, he also said this;

That's where you'll find me.
