"I'm ready." Evie announced as she climbed down the last step.
"Eat your breakfast and then we'll be on our way." Annah said while she arranged the plates of pancake on the dinning table.
Felix, Annah, Dave and Evie sat at the table and ate their food in silence.
"This pancake tastes wierd." she thought aloud.
"It does? It tastes normal to me." Dave responded
"I agree with Dave." Felix said.
"Stop complaining and eat your food, Evie. You'll be late for school." Annah was the one to talk this time.
After about 10 minutes of breakfast, Felix headed to his room with his laptop. He had urgent work to do so only Annah and Dave were taking Evie to school. Felix had gotten a new car the same day he got a video game for both his kids.
Anna got in the driver's seat with Dave in the passenger seat and Evie at the back seat. The drive was a quiet one. Evie closed her eyes and leaned her head backwards with her arms crossed. Dave looked outside the window, observing the tree and buildings that they passed by. After about 30 minutes drive, the car halted at the front of a gate. "POKER High School" was inscribed on the gate. She had seen the name online a few days ago but seeing it now made it sound even more wierd.
A security officer came towards the car and leaned forward, bringing his face to the side where Annah sat. She wind down the window and greeted the man. He looked like he was in his late thirties and had a well combed hair and a neatly ironed uniform.
"Good morning. Do you have a pass ma'am?" he asked politely.
"Oh, yes. I do." Annah took out her phone and showed him the pass on it. He took out a particular device and used it to scan the screen of her phone. It made a beeping sound and then he nodded his head.
"There's a building straight ahead. It's the last building on the left, that's where you need to go." He pointed at the straight path. He then signalled another security officer who sat in a booth to open the gate. The gate opened automatically.
"Isn't this school great?" Annah said.
"It looks too organized for a public school." Dave said. He was right. Evie had taken the online exam on Saturday. On the form, two options were given;
*Entry by assessment (50 multi-choice questions)
*Entry by payment ($8,000)
"Isn't that too much for a public school?" Evie asked her dad.
"It's got it's standard, honey. It isn't just any public school, that's why I like it." Felix replied.
"Whatever. I'm taking the test anyways." she turned back to the computer.
The pass mark was 60% with the questions looking all though. Evie had passed with a total of 87% (of which 10% was guess work). The school was very big with 7 different buildings standing apart.
After a two minutes' drive, Annah parked the car at a parking space close to the building that had been described by the security officer.
"STAFF BLOCK." Evie read the sign that was on the building. The trio entered the glass double door that led to a reception room. A blonde haired lady with green eyes welcomed them.
"Welcome to POKER High School. I'm Ms. Olivia. How may I help you?"
" Uhm. My daughter was granted an admission into the school. We're here to put up her registration." Annah said smiling politely.
"You must be Evie Jenkins." She said smiling at Evie.
"How did you know that?" she replied.
"Evie!" Annah glared at her.
"Your picture was uploaded on the site and also... for the past 3 years, no one has gotten that high in our online test."
Evie and Dave walked over to the waiting area where there were a few seats while Annah stood at the front of the reception counter. The two teenagers were talking about the receptionist who seemed to be sneaking a peek at Dave. The lady looked like she was in her early twenties. Both of them noticed her looking at him. 'If only she could make it less obvious.' Evie said to herself.
"I think she's kinda hot." Dave sent her a seductive smirk which earned him a smile from her.
"I think she's way older than you." she pinpointed the fact.
"So? Not up to ten years older. And since when did age matter in being hot?"
"And I thought you said you prefer the younger generation?" she said.
"Yes, I do. But I can still admire and appreciate the older generation too."
"Suit yourself."
Olivia handed some papers to Annah and told her that everything that she might need would be in them. The first one contained a map of the school. The second, a few rules and regulations of the school, The third was a list of the things that needed to be purchased as soon as possible like the textbooks, food and so on and the last one contained her timetable, locker number and classroom. Annah payed all the bills on the spot.
"That's all ma'am. She can resume as soon as possible."
Annah turned around and handed Evie the papers (except the bill).
Evie put the sheets of paper in her bag and held on to the school map.
Outside the reception, someone called, "Evie?!!!"
