Chapter 13 - United in Swords

Cadin woke up from his deep slumber, having spent the last hours of the day before trying to recall his memories of the past. From his time as a mercenary, killing quietly to killing groups of soldiers to his time as a tactician of the kingdom that betrayed him.

The new day's sun rose through the tent just like before. As if now routine, Cadin walked out of the tent, the leader though was not in front of the tent, but sitting on a bench eating from a bowl. Cadin began walking towards him, waiting for the next plan of action.

Before he could even sit down, a cook handed him a bowl, already piping hot.

"Oh, awake already, sit down Cadin. We shall discuss this new mission." Bowl in hand, Cadin sat across from the leader.

"The agreement has been finalized, our armies are in the process of being unified, for now though we have formed a small army of soldiers from the tribes. Furthermore this mission does not require a bloody end, with this in mind, you are no longer needed to kill entire camps worth of fighters. Use the bow you have or infiltrate their camps and kill the leaders, only the leaders." He explained. The minutes went by, the two ate their supper while more people exited from their homes and tents to get their own bowls of food for the morning.

"The leaders shall arrive any moment now with further agreements and such, but that is not your concern. Once these papers are signed you shall march with a small group of selected soldiers from each tribe, all with different armor, weapons, and ways of thinking. Thus, you shall support and cooperate with battle advisors of their own. If this plan succeeds, the relations of our army may improve somewhat, and provide a shared pool of workers we may use for an assortment of tasks. Perhaps that idea you spoke of before could work if we use them for construction and working," The leader explained to Cadin as more people began sitting down around them, the two ate faster than the others, preparing for the mission later.

They finished their meals, just in time for the area to become packed with people. Near the camp entrance, a small group entered through the slightly opened gate, escorted by a few soldiers wearing different armor and designs.

The leader turned around, hastily getting up and running towards them. Cadin ran behind, meeting the recently arrived group.

"Thank you for your swift replies, I suspect that the army has formed up outside?"

"Indeed they are." One of the emissaries replied.

"Very well, head inside the tent so we may discuss further matters regarding this alliance." After finishing, the emissaries all walked towards the tent, now guarded by two soldiers on both sides of its entrance.

"Cadin, due to your history and lack of any records of tactical experience on your part. Their battle advisors may simply see you as a skilled fighter and nothing more. Thus, this mission will be more difficult than expected. Do not attempt to raise tensions with the battle advisors, best of luck to you." Patting Cadin's back, the leader turned back, heading to the tent with the emissaries.

"Shouldn't be as difficult, I led armies before. Problem though is trying to make them trust my intuition and strategy, given the unfortunate predicament I have." Cadin was lost in thought while he left the camp's gate. As he walked, a darkened figure in the corner of his eye quickly stopped him, turning to it, the figure was the demon, standing tall and stiffly.

"The good thing about thriving in this realm is that none can see me, only you. Same goes for other demons."

"Others?"

"Ah, yes. Others, but that is merely talk best discussed later on. I merely went here to wish you luck, if you manage to do this. We will be one step closer to holding this island as our own, and the people will slowly turn into fanatics under our thumb. Do not fail." Just like before, the demon disappeared, leaving a cloud of black in front of him.

"Battle advisor, are you alright?" One of the gate soldiers approached Cadin, he realized that he was staring at nothing, just trees.

"Yes, yes I am." Cadin quickly went away from the area, soon, he met the army he shall help lead, standing just outside, facing away from him.

The army was decently sized, about a hundred stood, all easily identified by their different patterns and armor, along with the weapons they held. In front of the square formation of men in front of Cadin, five stood, all looking at the army.

Cadin quietly joined with the men, overseeing the soldiers, seeing his camp's own, donning shiner and newer gear than before.

"Great, new armor and weapons." Cadin thought to himself.

"Ah, the rumored warrior that wiped out entire camps all on his own, word spread quite fast on you." One of the men turned to Cadin, he wore a thick layer of fur partially concealing the studded armor beneath, on his waist was a short sword, simple in look with nothing remarkable. Cadin stayed silent, giving an awkward atmosphere as the man that spoke turned back to the army in front.

After some time of quietness, one of the men stepped forward, he cleared his throat and began to speak, "Men, we all hail from different homes. Now though, we all stand as one. United under our own banners, but fight for each other as brothers in arms. Today, we shall bring terror upon the barbarians that have besieged us for so long. But we shall not simply kill them all and torch their homes, no... We shall take their camps whole, that we may use their people and their resources for our benefit. Prepare yourselves men, for we shall begin our march to the enemy momentarily. Best of luck to us all, and may this story be remembered for generations long after us." The army let out a quick yell, shouting in response.

Cadin, alongside the leaders, led the way onward, starting their march in the open pathway to the camp of the enemy.
