Deity's POV
I should've known my past is something I can never escape from.
Mayor Tyrone Pierce stood in front of us, holding an envelope with the seal I know too well. Lev drew me closer to him, chest vibrating with growls which terribly confused me. Mayor Tyrone noticed the act and narrowed his gaze on the arm encircling my waist.
"Good afternoon, Mayor Pierce." I said, finally capturing his attention. "To what do we owe the honor of having you here?"
Although we talked about not being in each other's land, his visit purely means business and the envelope proves it.
His calculating gaze searched my expression, "A progress report from Maryland Psychiatric Center for patient Deity Holland came this morning. As well as a referral to Dr. Katelyn Gibson, for the patient to continue therapy session here in town. They didn't know your new address so it was sent to me."
My face blanched, finally accepting defeat. The very thing I ran away from finally caught up with me. With trembling hands I took it from his grasp, barely noticing the sparks when his fingers brushed with mine. I whispered my gratitude, unable to look both men in the eye. The veil to my personality now lifted, and I bet I'm once again seen as lunatic.
"I'll call Dr. Gibson to schedule for your appointment, maybe I can accompany you then." He added and for the first time, I didn't see distaste in his expression. I saw concern.
Lev growled, "No need, we'll go there personally. We appreciate your effort but there's no need to put up the caring mayor front when all you really want to do is flee."
The mayor's already dark eyes grew much darker, and for a moment I expected him to attack me again making me flinch and seek refuge in Lev's presence. The mayor saw my reaction and stopped, open-mouthed. Lev noticed it too, placing himself in front of me protectively.
"You fucker," he growled, "Leave while I still can stop myself from shifting." His voiced sounded low and commanding that I felt it with every fiber of my being. "Alpha to alpha, Tyrone."
The mayor looked like he was about to argue, but he left nonetheless. Only when his car was out of sight did Lev finally relax. He turned to face my cowering form, then helped me inside the house. When I was already seated in the living room he went out and came back with all the tools we used outside. He kept them in the storage room before he went back to sit beside me and pulled me in his warm embrace.
I enjoyed what was offered, burying my face in his chest as I wrapped my arms around him as well. I don't know when he will start ignoring me like everybody does. We stayed in silence for a while, treasuring the feeling and the moment of being together.
"Did he hurt you?" He finally asked.
"Not really," I answered. "He jumped on me, literally."
So I related all that happened since I saw Mayor Tyrone outside the window, up to the moment when he met me personally downtown.
"You know the rest," I ended.
He hummed softly, burying his face in my neck making me shudder in response. "You said you feel sparks underneath your skin when you touch him." I nodded in confirmation at that. "Do you feel it now? Do you feel the sparks as well when we touch?"
I pulled away lightly, making eye-contact with the most beautiful shade of gray I've seen. "I do. I can feel it growing every time I'm near you."
He smiled at that, eyes darkening. "Good. It should be." He pulled me closer again but I can't help but bring the conversation to the letter.
"Won't you ask me anything about the letter?" I asked nervously.
He grunted, "As long as it's not cancer and you're not dying on me, I'm fine with it."
I chuckled at that, "They think I have schizophrenia, even paranoia, but they can't prove it. So they signed me up for continuous theraphy to help me 'cope up' with the hallucinations."
"So it's not cancer." He stated.
I shook my head in amusement, "No, it's not."
"Would you like to go there and schedule an apointment?"
I scrunched up my nose, "No."
This time he laughed, "Very well. We have a house to paint and hectares of land to fence. Theraphy is out of the question."
Hope blossomed in my heart for having someone accept me. Not questioning my sanity, either. I saw Flavia hovering behind Lev and I grinned. She winked at me before disappearing. I turned my attention back to Lev who continued to stare at me in return.
"What's your story? Why does Tyrone Pierce hate you so much?"
He growled lowly, "He worked for me before. All of them. I lost my title to his father and since then he feared I might take it away from him someday. He's been looking for reasons to send me away, you gave him one."
"Sorry," I grimaced.
"I would've left with or without the agreement. Nothing's left for me in that place, it's not my home anymore." Then he looked at me as if I was something very interesting. "We should extend the lands, buy a quarter of the mountainside. We'll put barbed wires instead of wood fences to the side near Tyrone's territory. I'm not liking the idea of cutting down more trees, besides I want that man away from us as soon as possible." His soft growls came again, and I laughed at his desperate look.
"I don't have enough money to buy another land."
He smirked, "I do. Damn, I'll buy the whole town if you want me to." He said, lips traveling up my neck like a caress. My eyes widened and I slapped his arm in surprise.
"You freakin' have gazillion of money yet you are depending on me to buy you groceries and cook for you?!"
He chuckled, "You're doing fine."
"Fine?!" I growled making him laugh in his throaty voice. "Hire your own maid!"
He saluted, "Right away, ma'am!"
