Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

"We'll be leaving tomorrow for a summer vacation", Emma was telling their neighbor,Max, some days after their Visa had come out, he yawned dryly, "I wish I had the opportunity to fly round the world like you birds". He always referred to them as birds, taking the wings of a bird as their wealth which took them anywhere. "Don't worry...."Emma said sitting on the plain grass, he turned to look at her with a funny face, "next time I'll include you in our ticket..." she was saying when her Dad's car drive in, she stood up surprised that he was coming back by this time, something must have gone wrong, she thought. Mr Pete got down looking distressed, "Emma!" he called out, "yes dad" Emma answered walking over to him briskly, he paced around obviously very worried about something and as though trying to calculate something he said, "just got a call from Melan, grandma is very ill" Emma sunk to the car side very surprised, "wow well dad what are we going to do now?" Emma asked pondering, Mr Pete continued to pace up and down agitated, "that's what I'm thinking about too, we have no one there who can look after her (stopping in his tracks and glancing over at Emma) well I think you should go stay with her" Dad said, Emma frowned even though she was sorry for grandma but was certainly not thinking of spoiling her trip to Australia for Melan, "the only problem now is the ticket and the Visa that's already out, well that can be handled by Mr Webb" he said thoughtfully. Emma looked at him fussing a bit, "oh no dad!..."she shouted, Dad went inside "you'll still get to go later Miss" he shouted after her. She sighed and decided to take a stroll, trying to clear her mind from all the fun she had planned for Australia and adjust to the new arrangements. She placed a call across to Sarah telling her she would be joining then later, Sarah was so unhappy about it and tried to insist on staying back with her but dad would not agree. That was how Emma found herself packing for a remote place like Melan. The reason why grandma lived all the way in Melan was just something Emma wouldn't understand, 'old women' she thought. The sun was scorching, Emma thought as she went upstairs, almost sliding over Miles, who was looking very exotic as though going for a party, he's scent filled the stairway and Emma smiled looking at him, "where are you going to handsome" she laughed standing in his way, "I've got a hang out with my friends" he said glancing at his phone, "I'm not sure..."Emma said meaning to disturb him a little playfully when he walked past her. He stopped abruptly as he caught a sight of Sarah from the transparent glass doors, "why didn't you tell me your friend was coming" he asked, "why would I tell you my friend was coming" she said turning around to see who it was, "I don't want her to see me you know" he said stepping back to hide by the corridor, "no...go to the garden using the back door of the kitchen"she suggested, using his hand to hit his head he said, "you know I hate that stairway", Sarah came in, reaching the stairs she smiled, "hey" she said to Emma and Miles obviously, Miles smiled, "did you come to see my sister or me?" , "Certainly not you but you came in my way so..." She said stepping aside to let him stand on the same step with her. Emma sighed walking away as she wasn't ready for the drama this two always acted. His phone beeped and Sarah saw him decline the call, she smiled to herself sure of what that meant. "I'll be leaving for Australia tomorrow" she said, "I know...."Miles said looking at her neutrally, 'he was really complicated' Sarah thought, "well okay" she said as she walked upstairs not pleased with his reaction. Miles smiled and walked away, strange enough, Sarah thought. She came into Emma's room, seeing her packing, "I'm not happy I'm going to Melan, I mean it's such a boring place, I can't compare Washington DC to Melan" she was saying as she sank into the sofa. "I think Melan would do you some good" Sarah said quite soberly, "how?" Emma asked fustratedly, "you know, change of environment, don't worry about it okay, it would really do you some good" Sarah said as she helped her pack somethings into her box. "If only mum was here....she would have just gone to stay with Grandma...!"Emma cried out, Sarah laughed hitting Emma on the back. Mrs Pete was in Dubai for a conference regarding her work, and had been there for close to two weeks now.
