Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: Workaholic

Early in the morning, while the sky was still dark, Loraine and the whole entourage arrived at Le Country.

"Mr. Alistair, when will your friend arrive?" Loraine inquired while restraining a yawn.

She was feeling sleepy because they boarded the plane at 2:00 AM. and arrived at dawn.

Since then, they have been waiting in the VIP lounge for three hours. But the friend of Mr. Alistair, who was supposed to meet them at the airport, hadn't arrived yet.

What if his friend had been ambushed too or something?

Perhaps his enemy had already calculated whom Mr. Alistair would seek in case he survived.

"I'm sorry, Miss Loraine.

My friend was in charge of emergency treatment, causing a delay," Mr. Alistair said after he checked his phone. He smiled apologetically.

"Oh, I see. Don't be sorry, Mr. Alistair.

I understand that being a doctor must be hard.

I was just worried that something may have happened," Loraine clarified.

"Thank you for your understanding, Miss Loraine." Mr. Alistair smiled.

Shortly after, he went back to reading documents.

He was already working, though his injuries hadn't even healed yet. How would he recover if he was this workaholic?

'Ugh. I was like this in my past life, too.

While waiting for Mr. Bale, I would work in the lounge.

Just thinking about how I overworked myself to death still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.'

Loraine wanted to tell Mr. Alistair that working too much after he just survived might cause his death instead.

But she couldn't possibly say something like that to someone she barely knew. They were not even acquaintances or colleagues, so suddenly saying something like that would seem rude.

The others had already talked to Mr. Alistair earlier. They told him to rest and not bother with anything yet because of his injuries, but he just won't listen.

He still smiled and said he would just be reading, which wouldn't disturb his injuries.

Now, he was working on some documents.

He was still set on working, so it was better not to comment anymore.

After all, not because Loraine helped him meant she had any say in his life, right? What if he told her to mind her own business?

Seeing him very busy simply reminded her of her old self, so it was somewhat uncomfortable.

It was as if she was the one getting exhausted as she kept recalling how hard she worked in the past.

'I'll just pretend to be busy too,' Loraine didn't bother to have small talk with Mr. Alistair.

She fished out her phone from her bag and did some browsing on the net instead.

If she couldn't see him working, she wouldn't be bothered by it.

Moreover, she could understand why he didn't rest, even while injured.

The strength of his enemy was not something so easy that he could relax just because he survived.

It was someone strong enough to ambush him and determined to search even Mt. Kang for his whereabouts. The people they hired were even able to injure Mr. Alistair and his men to such an extent.

Loraine could tell it wasn't as simple as a family squabble, as Mr. Alistair said. It must be a feud related to inheritance or any money or property-related things.

People tend to forget about everything else when it comes to greed.

'Am I really on the right path? I know I have been wishing for an easy life. But being wealthy doesn't look so easy anymore,' Loraine sighed.

Being wealthy wasn't as good as she formerly thought. It was clear now how it also comes with big problems.

It made her grateful that her father was very powerful and could support her daughter in doing whatever she wanted without getting bothered by troublesome things.

Rand Antares must have shielded his only daughter from a lot of dangers and responsibilities. And yet, the same daughter he protected died from alcohol poisoning while with her friends.

It was so ironic and sad.

"Miss Loraine and Mr. Alistair, your coffees are ready," Sarah said while putting the coffee on the table. It brought Loraine out of her thoughts.

"Thanks, Sarah!"

"Thank you, Sarah.''

"No need to thank me. I'm just doing my job." Sarah smiled and continued, "If you need anything else, please tell me."

'Hmm, it smells so nice.' Loraine took in the scent of her coffee.

Just the scent itself awakened her drowsy senses.

She gently blew at her coffee before taking a sip. The bitterness helped awaken her from her sleepiness.

Coffee had been her best friend for years in her former life, as she worked through nights and nights with barely any sleep.

She had even gotten used to sleeping just a few hours before it became her routine.

But now, this body she now owns gets sleepy so much more than her former body.

It was great, though, since she simply wanted a relaxing life. But it was a bit tricky during times like this when she got deprived of sleep.

Maybe it was why Mr. Alistair said she didn't need to wait with him.

She could just do her own business, which meant she could just go and sleep. But it would be very impolite to do so.

If it weren't Mr. Alistair but some people she was close with, then she would just do it. But Mr. Alistair isn't, not to mention he was one of her father's business partners, and he was injured.

He had also promised a reward for this, so she should at least do the bare minimum and ensure he safely met his friend first before leaving.

"I remember you have your own company, Miss Loraine," Mr. Alistair mentioned after sipping coffee.

"Oh, yes, I do. But it's just a small entertainment company. It is nothing compared to Mr. Alistair's business," she replied politely, with added flattery to the latter.

It was true, though. Hers was just the former owner's playtime. It was nothing but a whim that her father granted.
