Chapter 43 - DEFEAT

Angie's POV

"Should I go with him to the basketball match", I thought and hit the side screen of his car.

He lowered the side screen and furrowed his eyebrow, "Any problem".

"Give me a ride to Weston College", I proposed.

He gazed largely at me with a surprise expression on his face.

He then looked away and tried pulling the screen up when I put in my hand between the screen and the open area.

"You don't mind breaking my hand, do you?", I asked and smirked at him which he returned back, aggressively.

He clicked on the door open button while I smiled and got in.

"Thanks dearie", I appreciated, sheepishly.

As expected, he didn't mutter any word as we drove through the highway to Weston College.

I brought out my cell phone from my Bagpack and begin to play a rookie song to tease him though.

He didn't say anything and drove but I continue to sing along the song, shoving my hands into the air.

Not too long, we got to a park, few meters to Weston College when the car came to an abrupt end.

I looked at him thinking he needed to get something and I met his eyes staring at me.

"Hmm...", I muttered for him to say something but he kept staring at me.

"What's wrong boffy?", I asked.

"Get off!", he commanded, calmly.

"Is that why you're staring at me like that?", I asked but no response came, so I continued.

"Well, we've not gotten to Weston College yet and I don't remember telling you to drop me off here", I said.

"Don't create scene for me, now get off!", he commanded again, this time a little bit harsh.

"Oh!", I mouthed, "I guess you don't want to announce our relationship this way".

He just scoffed and looked away.

For some reasons, I decided to obey him today. I've got other plans, so getting him tensed right now could spoil some of it.

I got down from his car sheepishly and watched him drive away while I also found my way to Weston College.

Weston College also got its vibes. The school has this large compound I couldn't resist to fancy with a very tall studying blocks.

Everywhere looks neat and well arranged but not too big as ours. Just a school to boost of.

Though it's a college, I could feel a great sensation in it.

I heard the school is among the top 10 college here in Brooklyn.

Of course, it should be with how fascinating and exciting it looks.

"Should I apply for Weston College admission after high school?", I thought as I stride into their school hall which I have managed to get the direction, after asking few students on my way.

"Oh no! Why should I? I've got friends from Brooklyn Academy, I can't afford to lose them".

Just as I got into the hall, pacing all around, looking for a good place to sit, I heard my name.

I turned immediately to know who called me and I saw Shed waving at me, smiling sheepishly.

He was sitting on the first roll down the hall since he was contesting.

"This naughty boy", I thought and waved back at him.

Just then, I got a glimpse of Maths sitting down beside him, his face moody and halfway lost in thought.

I ignored him and asked, "Where's Davis?".

Then, Shed pointed him out to me and as usual, he was sitting and chattering among the midst of cheering ladies.

I huffed away, "That boy can't change".

"Come down here", Shed mouthed and pointed out a roll of seat not too far from them.

I decided to accept his invite since I knew no one at the roll I was standing on.

As I sat down, I watched my environment.

Everyone seems to be calling out names of those that were participating in the match.

I also saw the Weston boys who were contesting but only one got my attention.

I don't know why but I feel he was their group leader as his face looked all mean but pretty. I may say he's quite cute.

Almost all the girls were staring and calling out to his name.

He looks too arrogant just like Maths and I felt some tension between them.

"Hello everyone!", the MC finally called after much deliberation on how the event should hold.

"Hello!", the students rolled happily.

The MC then begins to say things I couldn't hear clearly due to the noise which I know I might not even understand. I just watched.

The Cheering ladies was the first to participate from both schools.

I watched as Nancy and the girls danced smoothly representing our school and I hope we got the first position for the dance. They really did a great job at twisting and turning their body.

Finally, the game began.

I focused more on my boyfriend and no one else because I wished him a successful game.

He can't afford to lose to his rival. That'll worsen his mood and again, I will have to keep my distance from him for a while. I can't stand him pouring out his anger on me.

After much struggles and fight between both opponent, round one finally ended with Weston College taking the lead.

Of course, I felt so sad for Maths and also for myself.

Everyone was so aroused as each school begins to argue about who will take the lead.

I just sat and watched. I couldn't do anything myself since I knew no one to talk to or communicate with.

My gaze was all on Maths, watching as he stride back to his seat to fill himself up with water he drank from a bottle.

He looks tired but calm. It doesn't look like he was tensed with the wins.

The second round came to an end and we got a draw from both contestants.

I was so excited and wished for a good game from my school to take up the last round.

I still watched Maths. He wasn't giving any facial expressions which seems strange.

I hope he's okay inside of him.

The third round came in late due to an emergency, that'd relayed to us.

But as soon as the game begins, everyone noticed something was up as they starts to wonder where Maths was.

He didn't joined them and he was no where to be found in the hall.

"Omg! Where's he?", I thought, just like everyone else.

Then his fans began to wail, calling out his name and requesting for his presence.

I felt devastated.

I have seen him go through the door with other boys thinking they were called or maybe they needed to rest.

But I didn't even notice he was not part of the gamers when they were returning.

"What's wrong?", I asked myself as I walked through the crowd out of the hall.

Author POV

She went out of the hall, finding her way to the resting room where she thought she could find Maths.

Unfortunately, students were restricted from going into the room to avoid distracting and disturbing the gamers.

But Angie couldn't wait for the match to end because she needed to know why Maths didn't participate in the third round.

Suddenly, a thought came to her mind.

She went back to the room and knocked.

After some while, the door was opened by a security guard who looked at her from head to toe, thinking why she was knocking.

"Sorry for disturbing", she pleaded, "I need to see someone".

The security guard looked at her and muttered, "Can't you see students are restricted from here?".

"Yes I saw it", she replied.

"So I hope you don't mind taking your leave", the guard said and was about closing the door when she stopped him.

"Please I need to send a message to my boyfriend", she called.

"Boyfriend?!", the guard asked, amused while she nodded.

"Who's your boyfriend?".

"One of the gamer's, Mathias from Brooklyn College", she uttered, making the guard shocked.

"Brooklyn basketball leader is your boyfriend?", he asked again, astonished.

"Yes please, kindly deliver to him that I need to see him right now", she relayed.

"One seconds ma", he said and went back in, closing the door behind.

Angie didn't know what to expect whether Maths will accept to see her or he won't. She became anxious.

After some seconds, the guard opened the door and popped out his head.

"Sorry ma, but it was said that your boyfriend has long gone out of the school", he delivered.

Angie became alarmed, "What? You mean, long gone? I saw him some couple of minutes ago".

"That's what I was told, if you may excuse me ma", he said and closed the door back leaving Angie to wonder what was happening.

She stride away back into the hall and tried viewing everywhere but still got no glimpse of Maths.

She saw that both Shed abd Davis were still playing but another person already took the position of Maths.

"What could have gone wrong", she thought and grabbed her Bagpack and made her way out of the hall.

She thought of checking the car park to see if his car was still there but it was not.

How can she get to him? She has no one to ask of his whereabout and she didn't even have his cellphone number.

She was stressed out already but decided to visit his home, maybe something came up that he have to attend to.

But she didn't like the way he left. What if they end up losing the game?

Upon getting to SAH Mansion, she got down from the cab she took and ran all her way up to his room.

With a slight knock, Angie called, "Maths, are you in?".

No response came.

She called again and tried opening the door but it was locked.

She had no idea whether it was locked from in or out.

"Mathias?", she called again but still got no reply.

After several attempt, she decided to leave not after going down to greet Julianne and her daughter.

Around 11pm, Maths drove his car into the mansion.

He looked so stressed out and tired like he has been playing game the whole day.

He has received a call from Orleans about his Grandmother, who got ill since a week ago.

Her illness was considered as old age not until Maths was called that she has developed a fibroid tumor in her heart.

Upon hearing the news, he left for Orleans, handling over his position to another contestant.

After parking his car, he went in, ignoring the maids greetings and bow to him.

He was in no mood for greetings whereas, he has never replied to any of their greetings before.

He opened his door and went in.

He checked the time on the wall clock placed on the wall and discovered it was twenty three minutes past eleven.

He then heaved a sign of anxiety.

He has missed the game and his Grandmother is not doing fine. Why must they have to tangle the same time?

A message popped into his phone.

Without hesitating, he brought out his cell and unlocked it, strolling his eyes to the message.

It was from his mentor, Mr. Anderson.

Not only were there lots of message, pile of calls was also missed.

Could it be what he's thinking?

Quickly, he went to the call log and dialed Davis number.

The call was picked after some few rings.

"Hello!", Davis called with a saddened voice.

"What's wrong?", Maths asked after suspecting something wasn't right.

"Yo bro!", Davis called again and heaved a signed.

"Tell me every details", Maths said.

"We lost bro, that's it", Davis answered, brutally.

Maths went silent for some seconds before uttering, "It's fine, we'll chat tomorrow".

Then he ended the call.

Maths felt defeated. Though, they've lost most games but not with Weston.

He always made sure they take the leads when it comes to playing with Weston College.

Not because he hated the school, but because he can't accept defeat from their leader, Ashton.

He remembered the first time he joined the basketball game. He was quick to learn lot of skills and played so well.

Even though he was still in high school, he'd to participate in the nationals game and this has caught everyone's attention.

How could an high school student contest with college boys in nationals? They all thought.

Fortunately, he proved them wrong when he helped his school by defeating other schools in the nationals.

Nevertheless, it was Weston College that got defeated at the finals and this has shocked people.

Ashton was the best player at that time but end up losing it to Maths.

This got him angry and he'd challenged Maths.

"Motherfucker!", he called to gain attention in the changing room.

Everyone but Maths turned to him, trying to know who he was referring to.

Ashton stride to Maths who was busy arranging his stuff and tapped on his shoulder.

Everyone gave a gasp.

They knew Maths was a short tempered person and respect himself since he doesn't relate with any of them.

They wonder what Ashton was up to.

"You won, you should be glad", Ashton relayed with bitterness.

Yet, Maths just gave him a stare before returning to what he was doing.

But still, Ashton continued, "Of course you're welcome to win over me".

He then gave a laugh which turned to an angry expression.

"Don't dare me!", he challenged and scoffed, "You'll lose everything some day".

Although, Maths pretended he didn't hear him but inside of him, terror already grew.

Since then, he has decided not to leave any space for Ashton and make him regret challenging him.

He heaved a sign of relief, coming out from the shower as he thought of that day.

"It feels like I'm starting to lose everything as you have stated, Ashton", he muttered.
