Chapter 42 - Recon

Kayla stood looking at her sides. The bruises there were yellowed, almost healed. Her back was the same with nail marks. On her left hip was the worst bruise you could have practically seen his hand print there a few days ago. Though she now had a couple new ones, and honestly there was a part of her that enjoyed it. She'd pushed him in that car.

She pulled on the shirt and gave a sigh. Not like she was upset by it, but they were tender. She'd been very sore for a few days, but she didn't let it show. Though he'd asked her, and she chose not to really answer, but he knew anyways.

Savon had taken hold of her arm and pulled her toward him. He just looked for himself instead. She'd been irritated at him and at the same time pleased that he would care. They were starting to spend more time together since they got back. So she was noticing more things about him.

Kayla was starting to wonder where he disappeared to sometimes. She thought that he might be hiding something. Especially now that they were spending quite a bit of time together. Honestly she liked his company and he seemed to enjoy hers.

When you spent time like that with someone you noticed things. When he would suddenly go outside and disappear on her she got suspicious. Kayla thought to follow him, but didn't think that very smart. She'd just look distrusting and he'd pull away from her.

Right now though he was gone. Had been for three days. Savon was with others that had gone back to the city. They were taking it slow. They didn't want to rush into anything and regret it. It could be weeks to months before they decided to actually attack. She felt a bit on edge waiting for them to return.

She was worried for them all, but she found that she was more so waiting for him. Since coming back from the city she'd had his company every day. Sometimes it was just simple company. Not really doing anything just wanting company. He seemed to seek her out just as much as she did him.

Kayla was a bit angered at the moment however. She'd been left behind on this one and she didn't appreciate it. Men pissed her off sometimes. They had taken only a small group to see the lay out, and their justification was that she already knew what she was looking at.

She wanted to be where she knew what was going on. What if something happened and she could have helped? They didn't give her that choice and she was just as pissed at Savon, as she was at the others. Jerk hadn't even told her though he knew. Probably didn't want her to go. She wasn't some wallflower damn it. She could fight just as well as the next.

Leaving her room she made her way up top. She hoped that she didn't run into Anna. The crazy bitch. She'd come up to Kayla a few days after they had gotten back. It had just been them and Anna had verbally attacked her first. Kayla hadn't given her the chance to physically attack. It had looked like she was thinking about it.

However the day before the group left Kayla had seen Savon talking to Ana. A very dark air to him and Anna had just stood looking at him. Like she couldn't believe what he was saying and then she'd said something and turned from him walking away. Savon wouldn't tell her what they had spoken about. She thought to go and find out but didn't. Again she wanted to have him tell her, trust her. She did want him to think that she was sneaking behind his back.

Kayla came up top and moved over to the picnic tables and sat down. She was rather put out just sitting here. She glanced over at the building the others were using. She didn't like the one named Jonas. Didn't like the way that he watched Savon when around. She picked up on it immediately.

She could see it in his eyes. If given the chance he would probably try and kill Savon. He'd questioned others about him. Why they let something like him in their group. Drake had gotten very angry and defensive with the man after a short conversation. She'd found out later that Jonas had asked him if it really would hurt to be rid of Savon.

Jonas was gone at the moment. Part of the group that went and that pissed her off more. That asshole got to go but she didn't? She was stuck here just watching the others. She found that she really didn't have anyone to talk too.

She hadn't realized that she'd cut herself off so much from others. However she did talk to Todd. He was gone too, and she did like talking with Drake. Who was busy most the time with his duties. H e had a lot of people to take care of and not so much food to ration. They had to go on a raid or out to the fields that they grew. Before the weather really went south on them.

"Mind if I sit?" She looked up at Drake, and smiled. She'd been lost in her own thoughts and hadn't heard him approach.

"Feel free." She said and he gave a sigh sitting down looking out across the road. He sat there with her for a short time just lost in thought. Neither minded the silent company for the moment.

"They should be back soon I think." Drake suddenly supplied.

"Get the magical feeling?" She said in a teasing tone.

"Only if that's what you heard." She smiled at his comment.

"I noticed that you and Savon have been rather close lately." Drake added.

"Is that a problem?" She asked, nothing in her tone but curiosity. However inside she wondered at his comment. She'd be with who she wanted. Unless Savon up and really told her off she wasn't going to stop being with him. Though this time she might give him the cold shoulder. She just wanted to see that he came back okay. Stupid, why wouldn't he? Kayla ignored the tell tale signs her heart was trying to give her mind.

"No." Drake said looking at her, his gaze moving over her face. "Would it have made a difference if there was?"

"No." She said, he smiled a bit.

"I'm glad to hear it." She kind of blinked at him.

"Meaning?" Drake gave a sigh.

"Savon, he's... not so normal." He gave a humorous smile at that.

"Gee I hadn't noticed." She grumbled and he gave a kind of laugh.

"I had a good feeling about him when I found him. A worried good feeling though. That if he was pushed a certain way it would be the greatest mistake of my life to take him in."

"But you did it anyways."

"I did, because like you, I see exactly what he is. I couldn't but trust that he won't let that part control him. He hasn't yet, and I see the way that he looks at you. Very different from others. Yet it kind of worries me at the same time."

"How so?" Kayla asked pulling her hair to one side. Drake knew the most about Savon.

"Because sometimes I see that dark part in him watching, not the human part. That is what worries me. I don't think that part knows how to let go of things. Doesn't know how to tolerate rejection and..." She cut him off.

"If I decide otherwise I might not like what happens then." She finished for him. Which she didn't think a problem. There wasn't anyone else, and she more than liked Savon. Her feelings had grown a whole lot deeper over the time here. With someone like him it really kind of was all or nothing. He didn't do things by halves, and frankly neither did she.

"I'm not the kind of person that easily picks up and moves on. Even if the times aren't for people like us."

"I didn't think you were. I just wanted to hear it for myself. It's why I think he has let you in where he didn't let others. To dangerous if that part of himself became attached. More likely for him to snap and do something he didn't mean."

Kayla's gaze moved toward the road, and not so far away she could see movement. She felt her heart rate pick up a bit. Drake noted her gaze and looked toward the movement. He glanced back at her and saw the look on her face and felt satisfied with it.

She didn't look love struck or in that dreamy daze that some got. She did look like a person that had fallen hard and fast, but wasn't going to let that drive her actions. She'd be cautious and careful. Not admitting it to herself until it was safe. Plus he knew that she was angry that she had been left behind on this one.

Call him old fashioned, but there was a part of Drake that didn't think women should really fight. But times wouldn't allow that. Kayla was a strong independent woman. To tell her no and take her will away was like slamming your fist into a bee hive.

"Don't worry I'm a big girl and will handle it." He just smiled, he couldn't pick a better person in his opinion. Truthfully he cared for Savon, much like a son. He'd helped him, worked with him when no one else wanted too. He'd listened to him and took his opinions seriously, because Savon was human too. He needed that.

"They'll take you with when it is time to go. They need you." She glanced at him.

"That's not an excuse for right now." She got up and moved to the edge of the building. He moved to follow. She stood there with him watching as the others came back and they looked fine as they got out. Two vehicles had gone.

Others were coming out now and moving over toward them. The group moved over to the tables and most of them looked tired but none the worse for the wear. Clearly it had been a sleepless three days and nights.

"What did you find?" Drake asked and it was Neil who spoke telling them where they had stayed and what they had observed.

"There was a different feel to the place than when we'd been there before." Savon didn't look pleased with that.

"There was a good amount of destruction to the area as well. Like a powerful charge had been set off in the buildings near this one." Todd said. "Something big happened."

"What happened?"

"I think that Astor used that group to bring something over. Something powerful. The city wasn't as lively as before and when we arrived during the day there weren't as many out. Those that were looked almost lethargic. There was a drain on the city. More might have been killed than we know. Some might have been sacrificed that were in the general population." Savon explained. "A back lash for the need to balance opening the gate to hell, which I'm sure he did. It has to be what he did. Bringing more over, or something else."

"It was odd with how low the number was in the city. Our main targets are still there." Neil said.

"We figure that going back in a couple days is best." Pat supplied and there was a grumbled of agreement.

Kayla looked at the group, Jonas had a very dark look to him. Like a man that had failed to get what he wanted. Probably upset that Savon didn't sleep like normal people. Didn't give him the chance to kill him. Why they took such an unstable man with them she didn't know. The group talked a bit more and when they were done she promptly turned and left the group.

She'd heard what she wanted and she knew that he was okay. Though the fact that she cared annoyed her right now. Kayla hadn't made eye contact with him, and she half hoped he'd not come find her. Though she would like to give him a piece of her mind if he did.
