Lucian rolled over, encased in the warmth and comfort of his bed. His body was calm, relaxing and the tranquility of living miles away from the city life kept his mind at rest. But the paradise of living in peace never lasts if technology has anything to say about it. His cellphone vibrated loudly on the nightstand, forcing the alpha to cover his ears. Growling in frustration, he answered with a booming 'what' that must have tremored the entire house.
"You know, good morning sounds a lot better, Alpha," William answered cheerily, seeming to be moving about rapidly on his side of the call.
"You and I both know I'm not a morning person. Why are you bothering me so early in the morning?"
"I think I know where you've heard that name of which we do not speak before. I'm currently on my way to your house. And please, remember that tonight is a full moon so cancel all your plans."
Before Lucian could answer, the line went dead. His growls of frustration grew louder until his phone rang out again.
"What the fuck is your problem?!"
Silence. He picked up on the extremely low sound of breathing on the receiver, so he knew someone was on the other end. The breathing remained on one level that was impossible to be heard by human ears. His caller was not human. Taking a deep breath, he tried answering again, this time, in a more calm but firm voice.
"I can hear you breathing."
"I know..."
For the second time that day, the line went dead, leaving Lucian more frustrated than he was earlier. The wolves within the walls of his home kept their distance, sensing that their alpha was angry. The last time, his anger drove him to a sparring match with his beta, almost taking the young wolf's life. As he walked through the corridors, the memory of two days ago came back to him in a flash. He had called out her name to test the theory and William was there to watch his alpha in such a state before beating him until he was out cold. Served him right.
"Jesus," he groaned, tying his silky, shoulder-length hair in a loose ponytail.
William was already there in the library waiting for him. For the first time, since he's known his agent, he saw him in something other than a gray suit. He wore a pair of black jeans, dress shoes, and a Ralph Lauren shirt with the top buttons undone. It was rather strange. Did he quit?
"It's about time you got up," William grinned, pulling out a chair from the reading table for his boss to sit on.
"Shut up. Why are you here so early, anyway." Lucian dropped himself in the chair, automatically reaching for an already filled glass of whiskey. Nothing better invented than day drinking.
William did the same, pulling his chair closer to the table. "Right, let's get down to business. So, last night, I was in a meeting with Barnes and her when I realized something, a very small red spot on the lap of her dress. I would've thought nothing of it if the blood wasn't a completely different scent from hers."
"What do you mean? She's a wolf that eats people?" Lucian lowered his eyes, a small frown forming on his face. Death, his new intent.
"Could be," William shrugged. "But no. I did some research and checked out some fan clubs that still consider us myths and I think I came up with the answer as to what she is and why she has two predatory scents."
"What are you, a scientist now? Is that why you're dressed like a nerd?"
William took his insult as a joke, a chuckle escaping him as he took a sip from his glass. "No. I just felt like switching style today."
"Who are you and what have you done with my agent?"
Fighting the urge to roll his eyes; the alpha despises such foolery; William continued explaining what he had found. "So I dug a little deeper into Lore and found a list ranking for both Vampires and Werewolves. Alphas, of course, are on the top of our species, and Clan Masters top the other. However, there was a note at the bottom of each that said the same thing, and I quote: If werewolves and vampires lived as one, the number one would have been a Hybrid, a creature that is half of each species due to either pure blood birth or lycanthropy."
Lucian stared at William in disbelief. "She's an abomination?"
His agent nodded, tapping gently on his knee. "We just need to figure out how she was created. But not to worry, she doesn't bother humans. The blood on her clothes was not at all fresh but one could tell she had just filled up on a bag. She looks a lot better than when we saw her a couple of days ago."
"I think we should confront her."
"Every day you convince me that your sanity is fading because you must be crazy to want to stand up to a hybrid, worst of all if her wolf parent was an alpha."
"I am an alpha," Lucian growled, causing William to facepalm gingerly.
"Luce, for a being with super human hearing, you don't hear well. What I am trying to tell you is that if she is a hybrid, she has double the power a normal vampire or wolf has. She has both of them...combined. And that, my friend, is the closest thing to a fucking demi-devil on this earth."
The two went silent for a while before William asked a question that shook them to their very core.
"What did you just say?!" Lucian held him by the throat slamming him into the closest wall. "Are you crazy?!"
"Boys, boys, please remember that the house doesn't heal itself."
The two froze in place when they turned towards the owner of the soft, crystal voice that tickled their ears pleasantly.
"Mother?"
The woman smiled, resting her coat on a nearby chair. "In the flesh."
