Melrose didn't talk to Reed or even said a simple "thank you" for saving her. She thought not talking to him was better as it might lead to another heated argument.
When she went home, that was when she realized that the book she picked at the library wasn't with her. She must have dropped it when the shelf was falling. Getting off her bed, she faced the window and saw it was already twilight. She told Felicity she would bathe alone and dismissed her.
After her night bath, she wore her long robe. While drying her hair, her attention was caught by the sharp sound of clicking heels on the floor. Someone was passing by her room. A woman.
But Melrose found it strange. The maids' shoes have flat heels so they wouldn't make a noise.
She went to the door and listened. When she was sure that whoever it was had already gone past her room, she went out.
The hallway was silent and she found no one.
