Chapter 15 - Classes

Kroft couldn't do any of these requests, they were just too unreasonable difficult for the skill level he was at.

I need to think this through. There are Classes, Titles, Stats, Mana, and Health. Shit there is even a damn inventory. This is a video game. I have the advantage here, no one else from Cordis should be experienced in video games. The knowledge of my past life is invaluable. Although I have the disadvantage when it comes to how powerful I am right now, I know how these systems work, and I am going to use this advantage.

Kroft thought all of this over to himself and then ran through the steps of what he needed to do. Normally people would take quests and complete tasks in order to level up in video games, but that's not the only way. Kroft could farm, or perform repetitive actions to gain experience.

I need to find stuff to kill, it sounds barbaric but it is the best way. I need to profit off of the situation before others can grasp what is happening.

Kroft immediately started off; he found his way to the nearest town exit and was met by a guard.

"Are you heading out?" the guard asked Kroft.

"Yes." Kroft answered immediately. He wanted to move as quickly as possible in order to get ahead of everybody.

"Be careful then citizen, you won't have the walls of Monsoon to protect you out there."

"Ah of course, I'll be fine, thank you." Kroft responded as he passed the guard and swiftly left the town.

"Well at least I know the town name, you would have thought that I would find out the name as one of the first things. It's almost as if someone forgot to write about it and so slipped it into the guards' dialogue before I left town…" Kroft mumbled to himself as he wandered the cobblestone path out of town. Monsoon was surrounded by a sea of trees that reached towards the sky. The green lively atmosphere that followed around Kroft as he walked led him to thinking about a classic game environment.

It's so eerily generic. Kroft thought to himself. Well if it looks like a game, acts like a game, and feels like a game then it's a game. Now where would I find some animals to kill?

Kroft didn't have to wait as long as almost 2 minutes after thinking that a rustle came from the bush to the right of him. As soon as he perceived it he lowered his center of gravity by crouching and prepared himself for a fight. Fortunately a ferocious predator didn't leap out of the shrubs and instead a rabbit the size of an adult's forearm appeared. Its big black beady eyes stared up at Kroft before it registered him as a living being and it hopped away quickly.

"Well that was anticlimactic, wait, I'm not supposed to say that am I?"

And as if to answer his question a growl sounded from behind Kroft. Almost immedietly Kroft ducked and a red spotted leopard pounced above Kroft. By the time that Kroft was back up again the leopard didn't give him time to rest as it had already turned around and was readying itself for its second attempt at an attack. Kroft wasn't going to just evade though and he had already started preparing his attack. A spark formed at the top of his left shoulder and followed it's way down his arm to his palm. Just in time too as by the time the leopard jumped to Kroft a jet of fire spewed forth from his open palm into the open mouth of the leopard. The animal couldn't even let out a sound as his insides were cooked to a burnt char. The body of the leopard collided with Kroft and knocked him to the ground. The burnt smell of flesh embodied Krofts nostrils and with it he pushed the corpse of the leopard off of him.

"Well shit. I did not expect that, or well technically I did because I expected for a surprise attack to occur since I said the anticlimactic thing. Oh well anyways…" Krofts ramblings faded off as he noticed the messages on his screen.

{75 XP Gained}

{50 Gold Gained}

{Level Up}

"So I was right. There is XP and you can level up, big surprise. Who would have thunk it? Oh wait I did." Kroft sarcastically remarked to himself as he opened up the status menu.

Name: Kroft Aldrich

Race: Human

Title: None

Class: None

Health: 15/15

Mana: 25/25

Stats

Intelligence: 10

Charm: 1

Strength: 5

Agility: 7

Constitution: 5

Luck: 10

Kroft stared at the menu but didn't see anything related to his level. He tried a plethora of different keywords like level or other menu. He just couldn't seem to figure out how the fuck to see his level. Then a message appeared.

{In order to use the level up rewards you must first have a class}

What the fuck. Kroft thought to himself as he re-examined the Status Menu. He noticed then that it was true that he didn't have a class. He automatically assumed that a class would be assigned to him and he would be labeled as a magician because of his previously studying to be a magician. He was sadly mistaken though and began to question what to do.

What's the point of farming if I can't reap the benefits of my labor? Kroft thought to himself. I need to figure out how to get a class.

A class in a video game is like an occupation, the role which the player chooses. There are many different classes depending on how the character wants to play the game, you can be a Knight, a Chief, a Blacksmith, and many other options. Kroft was confused because classes are usually one of the first things that are chosen when you start a game. For everyone already to be in the game and yet not to have chosen a class is unexpected.

Stumped, Kroft decided to try asking the game system.

"How do I get a Class?"

{A Class will be assigned to you based on your activities in the first 24 hours in the game.}

"Hm…"

This statement was pretty general but it allowed for Kroft to understand that for him to use his level ups that he would have to wait a day. More importantly though it confirmed that Kroft wouldn't be picking his class but it would be assigned to him. He immediately continued his search for more animals to farm.

"If it's based on what I do within the first twenty-four hours, that means I need to kill as many things as possible. I need a Class that will allow me to protect myself and the best defense is a good offense as the people say… whoever those people are. Anyways where the fuck did that rabbit go?"

Kroft continued his search for more animals to farm but while doing so he spoke to himself mentally.

Progress on analyzing the unidentified energy?

[Unidentified Energy analyzation at .001%]

Oh great! Kroft thought to himself. Even my power is having trouble theorizing what this caused all of this. I need to find out more information in order to analyze everything to a greater extent but there's no way for me to do that right now. I can't just ask the system to explain what it is and be like oh and while you're at it could you perhaps also tell me your deepest darkest secrets. I need to break up these things into smaller, more specific analyses.

I need to figure out how to optimize my chances of getting a class well suited to me.

All the while that Kroft is internally monologuing he has been walking throughout the forest in hunt of more animals. Unsurprisingly there is a fox in the forest and with it Kroft begins his 24 hour farming session.

15 hours later

Kroft had spent the last 15 hours tirelessly hunting animals of all calibers. He had hunted dozens of rabbits, 7 foxes, 5 leopards, and even 3 crocodiles which he found in a swampy area towards the edge of the forest. Animals weren't the only things lurking in the lush forest and more than once did Kroft have to hide when he was alerted to dangerous animals through the detection of his power. Throughout his entire hunting experience though Kroft was gaining information from the system. He was slowly learning more and more about the game from the messages given to him when he questioned what was what. He learned that titles are rewards given to you when you accomplish great feats, after each level you are given a set amount of status points which you can choose to put into the different categories. He learned about what each stat does, with intelligence affecting your mana, Charm your ability to camouflage and persuade others, Strength, well that's your overall raw physical power, Agility affects all movement based activities, and Constitution is your overall defense. All that he could get the system to say about luck was that it helps with gambling which was oddly specific and strange. Altogether though the progress which he was analyzing classes was increasing with the amount of information that he was gathering about the system. Kroft quickly calculated in his head what time it was and continued with his search for more animals to hunt and before he knew it the time to get a class was upon him
