Chapter 12 - The awakening - Part 1

Let's fast-forward, not quite present day and he has just been released from another custodial sentence, nine months of which he will serve half inside and the other half on licence, once his licence is finished he will then have to serve a top up probation order that will expire a year after his release.

Since his release he has quite the up and down, he had been placed in emergency accommodation, a hotel and the same hotel which was part of the business he stole from and had just been released from prison. Ciaran was the manager of a family entertainment centre and hotel, after the covid lockdown started the council who had been the landlord used the hotel to provide additional emergency housing.

Ciaran came out of prison determined to change his life, make a real go of it and create a positive life but that would never happen in the hotel. Ciaran had started partying drinks and drugs soon followed but he saw the decline which led to a suicide attempt. He had enough of everything being so negative so he fought against it, he won and that was the start, he was then moved in to a shared property.

Ciaran had started to make real progress in the first two weeks in the shared property, it had not lasted long enough with the council moving one of the premiant drug abusers in to one of the other rooms, that had followed with two of her dealers practically moving in and that also meant that the thousands of pounds worth of weed, crack cocaine and heroin came with them.

Ciaran had already decided that he is going to get back in to work while he works with his demons and he had started work as bin man, collecting residential wheelie bins for an agency while they were still on essential workers only.

Ciaran had finished his second week and he was really enjoying it even though he had rained almost the whole two weeks, he is a very active person so walking most of the day is right up his street, it did mean that come the weekend he is exhausted.

Waking up that Saturday morning he was positive and energetic, he had remembered his mother needed help with moving heavy furniture so that she could clean underneath, he had got there and while he was sat having a coffee with his mother before they started, Ciaran had received a call from his brother. Our older sister has just been hospitalised following a breakdown.

Ciaran didn't waste any time and within the hour he had already booked the flight to Gibraltar where his sister was living. Ciaran's brother calls again after speaking to her ex-partner, he had told him that there was no point in anyone going over, they would not be able to see her or help. Hell no all that told Ciaran was that he wanted to control the situation and his sister needs support, support from someone that wants only the best for her, whatever that may look like.

Ciaran is now four months in to his most recent licence after being released from a nine-month custodial sentence, he has still got another two weeks left and will then serve a remaining seven and a half months on probation, yet here he is on a flight out of the country how he got through customs he doesn't know but he did and the plane is now taking off.

Though he had only flew to and from Gibraltar the once, you could never forget landing or taking off there with Gibraltar's runway being the fourth most dangerous, this was due to both the length of the runway and because there is water at the start and at the end of the runway, it's also between the airport terminals and mountain.

After landing Ciaran makes the short walk to the high street where he had met with her ex-partner a two of her friends, they had spoken about what they knew up until now, one of his sister's friends had offered to hire a cleaner for the flat but Ciaran declined, he loves cleaning and it will also give him something to do while his sister is in hospital.

Ciaran was able to visit his siter briefly that day and while there he was able to book a longer visit the following day. Ciaran was then able to collect his nephew from school with his father, his nephew didn't know that he was over so he was excited to surprise him and it did surprise him, Ciaran had spent the evening with them, his nephew excitedly showing him anything and everything he could.

The following day Ciaran was able to visit his sister alone, he had arrived at the hospital, he wasn't waiting long before being ushered to a private room and in there his siter was waiting. Ciaran entered the room and you could see the relief in his siters face. Though he could see the distress and erratic behaviour, he could also see that hospitalisation was excessive, they had spoken about the more distressing situation she had been facing and it was clear to Ciaran, his siter didn't need to be locked away and force-fed medication, she needed support from someone that loves her and wants the best for her, someone that knows what it is like and will do whatever it takes the help her heal.

Ciaran spent the following days visiting his sister, they had spoken in depth about her suffering and it was clear his sister's heightened distress was due to her environment, him and his siter had discussions about her discharge and it was a conversation of maturity, there was no delusion of things being perfect and they both knew there would still need to be loads of work healing after her discharge.

Ciaran went straight back to his sisters determined to find a way of his siter being discharged, it had taken him less than an hour and he had wrote a letter demanding his sister be discharged in to his care within seventy-two hours. The doctors had declined but had agreed to time in the community with him. After two days there had been no valid reason for the doctors to continue to hospitalise his sister but had still refused to discharge her, this time had given his sister the time to relax, she knew that she had the right support that she needed.

With that support it also contained vast knowledge, as well as an incredible ability to find the information she needed and with that Ciaran was able to advise his sister on how to apply for a tribunal hearing and after finding a solicitor and a quick preparation the hearing was upon them.

They hearing was held via video link in the hospital with three independent doctors sitting on the panel. The doctors open the hearing and his sister had started to present her case but was stopped straight away, one of the doctors had read through the file and asked why she wasn't discharged after my formal request, he then went on to ask his sister to sue the hospital so that change for the better can be made, the hearing was then suspended pending a conclusion and Ciaran and his sister was asked to wait out in the waiting area.

Ten minutes had passed and they had both been called back in to the room, they doctor on the panel had apologised to Ciaran's sister and then told her that they will not be upholding the hospitalisation order and she is free to be discharged.

After they had organised community support for his sister she was discharged and went home. The following weeks had been difficult for the both of them but the support that each of them showed the other it wasn't long until they had stabilised their lives.

Ciaran had now been there two weeks, he had spoken to his probation officer and though she wasn't happy that I left without permission she agreed to only issue a final warning and demanded that he return by the end of the month.

Ciaran and his siter had spoken about him staying, though it would mean that if he did when he returns to England he will be arrested and sent back to prison to serve the remaining probation period, but then it's a beautiful country with great weather so how could he go back and it wasn't long before he got a job restoring and decorating properties.

It is now a month past the time Ciaran's probation officer demanded his return and he has just made the call to her to tell her he will not be returning to England, she informs him that she will have to issue a warrant for his arrest and when if he does return, he will be arrested at customs but Ciaran was planning to never return so he wasn't bothered.

After a couple of months in Gibraltar Ciaran decided to move across the border in to Spain, not only would he be able to live alone, the price difference allowed in to rent a large two-bedroom flat, but he hadn't thought about was applying for residency and when he looked in to it he found out to start the process, he would have to go to one of the Policia stations and have them approve the application, this also including a records check and knowing he had a warrant out for his arrest in England, he wasn't sure if that would show, he didn't want to risk being arrested and deported.

Ciaran decides before applying for residency, he is going to return to England and face the music. He books the flight and now landing in at Gatwick airport, in the cue to pass customs and he is expecting to reach the front of the line just to be detained.

After waiting nearly three hours in the line he reaches the front and has now been called forward, he is nervous but he isn't showing it and after the custom officer had gone through all the checks he was required to do taking longer to do then every other passenger, he turns to Ciaran and welcomes back to England.

Ciaran had the weekend free before surrendering to the courts on Monday, he had a quite weekend and then on Monday morning he was at the court house, he had already organised a solicitor to attend before he returned to England and after a brief conversation with him, he then went and spoke to both the prosecution solicitor and the court form probation officer, they had both informed him that they are going to push for Ciaran to serve a custodial sentence of the length of what was remaining when he left.

There had been a failure to attend in one of the other court rooms and the usher had asked if he would be okay for his case to be heard in that court room, it is still before lunch so if he does get a custodial, he will be on the lunch time bus and be in his cell by dinner time and the soaps so he agreed.

Ciaran walks in to the court room and straight to the dock, he was asked to confirm his identity and once he did his solicitor stood to present his case but the magistrate asked for him to take a seat while the allowed the man on video link screen to talk first.

After the man on the screen identified himself as a senior manager of the probation officer, he then went on to say that he has received a report stating he is to withdraw the breach, this was due to the progress Ciaran had made both before going to Gibraltar and while he was over there. He also stated that due to Ciaran's probation order expiring two weeks before, he is free to leave without any requirements.
