Chapter 15 - His first custodial sentence

The first time Ciaran received a custodial sentence he was nineteen, he too agreed to attend the police station to discuss charges for a criminal damage and attempted burglary charge. Ciaran was out drinking with two friends and at the end of the night they were all heavily intoxicated, Ciaran had told them he knew where there were over five thousand pounds in cash.

Stood at the front of the chip shop Ciaran worked at, they all find big bricks and start throwing them at the front window but it was thickly laminated and no matter how hard they threw or how much, it still wasn't going through.

Out of nowhere we hear oi and then the women said that she has called the police, Ciaran was able to get a look at the women, not that he needed to as he already knew who she was, it was his older sister.

Everybody starts running off going down the road opposite so they could double back down a different road and head in the direction of one of Ciaran's friends flat, not that it had worked.

Minutes later a police van speeds up to us and stops beside us, separating us so that they could talk to us individually and after they had finished talking to all one of the officers had said that Ciaran's two friends had fit the description of two who tried to break in to the chip shop and that they are both under arrest, this left Ciaran and the women to go free.

Ciaran sister hadn't known who was trying to break in and defiantly didn't know it was Ciaran, he stayed in front of the shop whereas his sister poked her head out of the side window of the flat above.

The following day Ciaran had met with his two friends once they had been released from the police, they had both been bailed and they had said the police didn't have any evidence just my sister's statement. Later that day Ciaran answered the phone to a private number, it had been the officer in charge of the case, she asked if I could come in and answer some questions about the night before.

The following day Ciaran goes to the police station, when he arrived he was cautioned and placed under arrest but he was expecting that, what he wasn't expecting was when he was in the interview and the officers inform him that one of his friends had made a full statement.

After the interview Ciaran was placed in a cell while the officers discuss with the criminal prosecution service on what they should do. Ciaran had not waited long, because he didn't fit the descriptions in his sister's statement and they only way they could link Ciaran to the offences was the statement made by his friend, so Ciaran was given a no further action.

Relief but that hadn't lasted long, while the police were not progressing with those charges, he would have to remain at the police station. Ciaran had received fines from the courts for previous offences and Ciaran had ignored them, they had caught up to him and the police had told him he would be remanded in the police station so that they could bring him to court in the morning to face charges of non-payment of fines.

Six am and the cell doors start crashing and it wasn't long before Ciaran's cell door was opened and he was ushered out to the custody suit, he was searched by the transport staff and placed in a large set of handcuffs, a second handcuff was placed on his right wrist and attached was a chain that led to another cuff on the wrist of the transport officer though she had a leather strap under hers.

Half the day had gone by so Ciaran asked where he was on the list and when the cell officer returns, he tells Ciaran he isn't on any list that they warrant was I direct custodial and that he should have been transported straight to prison.

They day had now passed and the court staff had started loading the prisoners on to the prison bus, but when Ciaran asked what prison, he was going to he was told that all the local prisons were on lockdown and he will be taken to haven't police station while they wait for available cells.

Ciaran is in a foul mood now, he had spent fifteen hours in the police station, then a further ten in the court cells and the whole time alone, so he wasn't looking forward to having to go to another police station and planned to act up as much as possible to amuse himself.

Walking in to the custody suit to be booked in, Ciaran had planned to start acting up straight away but when he got in to the custody suit, he saw a familiar face behind the desk a custody officer he had met a while before on another set of charges.

Ciaran had got on well with the custody officer, not only was she beautiful, she was also down to earth and didn't look down on him, she still treated him like a person and not some lowlife degenerate that isn't worth the time of day.

For two of the three days Ciaran was in the police station the custody officer would spend as much time on the other side of Ciaran's cell door talking to him which had helped him a lot.

On the third morning Ciaran had been woken up at around six thirty in the morning, a transport bus was waiting to take him and the other prisoners to Exeter prison where they had available cells, the drive being four and a half hours long.

The bus stops inside the prison grounds and one by one the transport staff start to open the bus cell doors, when get to Ciaran, they still handcuff him, then lead him off the bus. Ciaran looks up and could see the exercise yard, the prisoners see Ciaran, him being five-foot seven with a slim frame and the mass population of prisoners being older and bigger.

Ciaran is now being led towards the door in to the building, a lot of the prisoners are now at the edge of the large fence around the exercise yard, they are all now shouting threats, the most common threat the had shouted was that they were going to rape him in the shower.

By the time Ciaran reached the prison he had already served five days and when he was booked in to the prison, he was told he had only received fourteen-day custodial sentence but that his release date was set for a Saturday, this meant that Ciaran would be released a day early because they don't release prisoners over the weekend.

The next morning Ciaran was let out to have a shower, taking the threats seriously Ciaran had made an agreement with his cell mate to stand watch while he had a shower and make sure nobody sneaks up on him, if he would do the same for cell mate.

Ciaran was then released an hour later and after all that he still had to pay the fine because it was a compensation order.
