Chapter 17 - Reconnecting with family-The job

What a year Ciaran had, at the start of the year he had moved to Surrey for the first time, when his family moved to Surrey, his mother used a violent relationship to move out of Southampton and was offered a place in a women's refuge hostel, Ciaran wasn't allowed to go because he was soon turning eighteen and it was against the policy for a male my age to know the address of the property, it wasn't until Ciaran was nineteen that he saw his family again.

Missing his family motivated Ciaran to make his move to Surrey, back involved with his family work, though he had a rocky time with his younger brother's bullies to start with, then there was the playful distraction from his new neighbour Krisiia, Ciaran knew his best chance was for him to find a full-time job, it had to be something he was both passionate about and something that would use a lot of his energy, he found a job as a commie chef through a friend of his.

The years of passion from cooking at home had the chance to really shine through, Ciaran was always friendly and very charming acting like a social magnet, all the staff in the kitchen had been males, I was the last to be employed in the kitchen, the next above me was the friend that had got me he job, then two grill chefs, the head chef and kitchen manager, we had another who would run the breakfast shift and then to act as our kitchen porter through the lunch period.

With Ciaran's ability to learn at a rapid rate and his love for food gave him the chance to familiarise himself with the spec book, to the extent that on his first week his was asked to cover the lunch period, this would mean he would be alone and sure enough the general manager of the beefeater took the opportunity evaluate his skill after the kitchen manager had praised him, she had ordered a steak-lobster combo and she loved it.

From then, the kitchen manager continued to teach Ciaran everything he could and he loved it, Ciaran had found a great team to work with and had many of nights to remember. Two months in to a three-month probationary period, the kitchen manager pulled Ciaran aside offering him a promotion and pay rise, this would be considered as doubled due to being done at twenty-five pence intervals and Ciaran was offered a fifty-pence pay rise for the position of second chef, the head chef handed his notice in and the second chef was being promoted to head chef, though he was talented chef, he lacked the ability to understand the admin and management of a kitchen beyond cooking and running a shift, this is where Ciaran came in.

At the point of the leaving head chef handing his notice in, Ciaran had already learned all he could and had already trusted to fulfil the tasks unsupervised.

Ciaran had a decent set up with his friend that helped him gain the job, Ciaran would start his split shift at nine in the morning and would be expected to take a break between twelve and three, he would then work through until eleven that night, his friend would be expected to start at twelve and work through until nine that night, but he would come in and confirm with Ciaran it was okay that day and with agreement, Ciaran's friend would leave to return at three, he would then work until eleven and Ciaran until nine.

On the same week as being told about the promotion and pay rise after completion of my probationary period, Ciaran and the friend had the opportunity for such a shift, but on this occasion, Ciaran had started a six in the morning and was due a five-hour break but he still agreed to the regular routine, today was also line clean day for the bar and when they do a line clean, we are allowed to drink the pints they pull through before running the cleaning salutation through, this would happen once the pub was closed.

The pub had a dry house rule that meant that staff were not allowed to drink at the pub unless sat in the restaurant having a meal, on this day the general manager had allowed Ciaran to order a couple of drinks while he waited for the place to close, it was nine at night and by the time he would have got home, he would have had to head back.

By the time him and his colleagues finished the pints, Ciaran had drunk quite an amount but was still able to hold himself together, the kitchen manager invited everyone back to his for more drinks and Ciaran's mistake was saying yes.

The options for a drink were a cocktail made by Hailey or a cocktail made by Hailey, she was the kitchen managers girlfriend and someone Ciaran had said he was going to make an advancement to, while sat out having drinks with everyone including the kitchen manger, this was before I knew they were an item, while dinking his first drink, the kitchen manager dared Ciaran to run from the staff complex, through the car park and into the hotel reception to tell the receptionist I loved her, ironically her surname was loveday.

Ciaran never one to shy away from a dare and strips right down, out the flat and while he runs through the car park, he covers his anatomy and it wasn't until he was in view of the CCTV that he relaxed his arms, he enters the first set of double doors but had to wait for the receptionist to press a button opening the next set, she had done this before he reached the door, Ciaran struts up the desk and leans his left arm on top, crossing his leg as well, "loveday, I love you", she laughs and asks what's going on so I stayed to explain.

Walking through the patio door to the kitchen managers flat, he looks around for his clothes but of course they were hidden, not that, that would be a problem for him, he warns the kitchen manager to return his clothes or he will regret it and when he refuses, Ciaran picks his pillow up and starts to wipe the bottom of his balls with, the kitchen manger soon returned everything.

Ciaran continued against his better judgement and it wasn't long before he was passed out on the grass outside, his friend had a flat above and Ciaran was carried up and left there.

The next morning Ciaran wakes up still somewhat drunk and oblivious to his appearance, he walks over to the hotel to start his shift at seven, he walks in to the reception area and the receptionist's and housekeeping staff shocked at the state of him, one of the women gave him clean towels while another a key to an empty room and he was told to shower, what Ciaran failed to notice when he woke up was that he had vomited during his sleep and there was a lot.

Ciaran kept his head down that day and during his shift the following day he was asked into the general manager's office, you know what this is about and that was the exact question she asked, Ciaran's reply was I think so, the general manager presses the spacebar on the keyboard of a computer and the events of that night unfold in front of his eyes, while it was funny at the time and I can laugh about it now, after playing a small amount of the video the general manager turns it off and tells him that she is going to be lenient this time, she is not going to report the matter to the police as had she and he was convicted, both the charge and sentence isn't something that represents Ciaran's personality, more the opposite as you can imagine from his history, the general manager will hold it on my file and if I face another disciplinary action within the following three months, the disk will be handed to the police.

Nine days had passed since the incident and Ciaran starts his shift, it's the last day of his probationary period and while he was confident that he passed and would continue to work there. The time had come for him to sit down with the kitchen manager and discuss the probationary period and the plan going forward.

Much to Ciaran's surprise that not only was he allowed to continue to work with them, he was still getting the promotion and pay rise, he was surprised that the general manager agreed to uphold the offer, the kitchen manager however, I knew if you could he would make it happen because if it does, it means he can do what he wanted, whenever he wanted.

The kitchen manager was a regular user of cocaine, so the only time Ciaran would see him was the odd occasion he would come in to make himself some food, or when he needed to go through the stock and reports with Ciaran but that was the way Ciaran liked it, while there were certain requirements for the role, Ciaran and the kitchen managers approach had been different and while both ways were right, they would clash together but luckily Ciaran was the kitchen managers counterpart so they rarely worked the same shifts, not that the kitchen manager worked much.
