Chapter 3 - Meeting the Gang

"Benjamin." Velena hit him to get his attention. Benjamin lowered his phone and looked over. Through the window behind Velena, Benjamin saw his school, Wood Berry High School.

Sergeant Ward was leaning against the fence blocking the bus port, sipping his coffee. "Bye, grandma." Velena's voice rang out across the silent parking lot.

He and Benjamin had arrived at school and were walking towards the bus port.

While walking they were rambling about how they think they're day is gonna go and if anything interesting is going to happen.

When they reached the fence Sergeant Ward opened the gate. "Where are you going so early," he asked as they passed through the gate. "My grandma just dropped us off early is all," Velena replied.

The Sergeant nodded at them as they walked away towards the bus port entrance. Velena and Benjamin briskly walked to the doors leading inside the school.

Once they were inside Velena said, "It's freezing out there." "Yeah," Benjamin replied. As they approached the cafeteria, Isaiah ran up behind them and smacked Benjamin on the back of the head. "Your spatial awareness needs work," Isaiah taunted as he ran off in the direction of the cafeteria.

As they walked into the cafeteria. They saw that Isaiah was sitting and was already talking to Corey, moving his hands so fast that they were a blur. "Ok Corey, today you're going down in Farm house panic," Isaiah said confidently.

Farm house panic was an unique fps were you play as different farm animals, it was very popular with the students."Lighting chops is so much better then Mighty Beef " Isaiah stated.

"I mean, just factoring in lighting chops speed, he's already one of the fastest in the game". "not only that but his lighting ability gives him the benefit of a long range attack and some serious mobility".

Combine that with the fact that he can parry any damaging ability or attack and you have a pretty stacked character." Corey seemed at a loss for words.

He just turned to talk to Benjamin and Velena who had just sat down. "Hey," Benjamin said simply. Corey already looked exhausted from his argument with Isaiah and didn't say anything. Isaiah continued rambling until Lennox showed up. "Shut up," Lennox yelled at Isaiah, smacking the back of his head in the process.

Isaiah immediately stopped talking and began to rub the back of his head. "God, your loud," he said as he sat down next to Isaiah.

He turned to Velena and shook his head. "Not that stupid game again," he said. During the commotion, Velena had opened a mmorpg on his phone and was leaning on Benjamin's shoulder.

"What's wrong with the game?" Velena asked, confused. "It's stupid, that's what," Lennox said pointing at the cute, animated characters covered Velena's phone screen.

"It is not stupid," Corey said. He pulled out his phone and showed it to Lennox, "See?" Lennox just shook his head and said, "Farm house panic is way better." Velena huffed and went back to his game while Lennox got up to go grab some breakfast.

From across the cafeteria Coach Haynes spotted them sitting at their table. He walked up to them and asked, "Where's Evan?" "He's not here yet," Corey replied. Coach Haynes shook his head and stretched. "So how many of you did your homework last night?" Coach Haynes asked with a smirk.

Isaiah, Lennox, and Corey all looked away. "Well… I… uh…," Isaiah stammered. "Just get it done before you come to class," he said with a chuckle. "When Evan gets here, tell him I look forward to our fight," he said as he walked away.

"Evan has, like, no chance of beating him," Isaiah said, shaking his head. "So, Benjamin, I hear you have some homework you want to show us," Lennox said, looking at Benjamin sternly.

"I don't think I said that sir," Benjamin replied, raising an eyebrow. "Well let's assume you did," Isaiah said, pulling out his notebook.

"You could at least wait until enrichment before we get started with the homework," Benjamin said, sighing.

As the cafeteria filled with more people, it began to get louder and louder. "Why are they holding us here for so long?" Isaiah yelled over the noise.

"Maybe they want to talk about the fight that's gonna happen," Velena yelled in response. So much time had passed that Xavier and Evan both showed up in the cafeteria.

"Why is everyone here instead of in the first block?" Evan asked, confused.

Isaiah opened his mouth to answer but was cut off when the principal, Mrs. Goldsmith, started talking through a megaphone. "Attention students," she said, "Today during lunch we will be having a school-sanctioned duel between Coach Haynes."

She paused as there was an eruption of applause. "And Evan Burgess," she continued. There was a lot less clapping for Evan and a few kids even snickered. "I'll show them when I beat Coach Haynes," Evan growled.

"There will be a concession stand selling candy, chips, drinks, and even pizza. If you don't want to buy anything, grab some food from the cafeteria and go outside to the football field.

The fight will be starting at 11:30," Mrs. Goldsmith said. With that, she lowered her megaphone and headed away, presumably to her office.

An announcement came over the loudspeaker, saying that the students could now head to their first block classes. As they got up, Isaiah started scolding Evan on how there was only a 0.01 percent chance of him beating Coach Haynes. "I have a list enumerating the many ways in which Coach Haynes is better than you," Isaiah said.

He then pulled a long list out of his bookbag. The bottom of the list fell to the floor and rolled on for some time before finally stopping. Evan ripped the list out of Isaiah's hands and crushed it, slicing it into pieces with his sword.

"Coach Haynes doesn't have any powers," Evan said, "there's no chance I can lose." "Actually it would be sad if Coach Haynes actually thought he could win."

They finally arrived at Mr. Martin's class. The door was open, and Mr. Martin was waiting inside for them. As the group of friends walked through the door.

Mr. Martin looked up and said, "Good morning," "Good morning," Benjamin echoed in unison with the rest of his friends.

Benjamin sat down between Corey and Velena in their usual seats in the back of the room. As everyone else began to take their seats. "Evan Burgess," Mr. Martin called. "Could you come here for a second?"
