Chapter 4 - Chapter 3

"I have written not about a dream but what it means to me. I have written that a dream takes me to a magical place. I don't expect it to be practical but want it to be magic. A dream lets me reflect on myself even when I am annoyed from the world. A dream lets me think that the world is safe. A dream lifts me up when I am down. A dream takes me to a happy place. The reason why after I am bullied every day, I still wake up with a smile is a dream. I thought it would be better to write what a dream means to me than what I dream about would be better." Blake said to Mrs. Bailey and the class for his essay (The class didn't seem that interested). Mrs. Bailey was proud of what her student said and put a smile on her face to say

"Well done Mr. Hawthorne. I couldn't explain it in better words myself." Blake put on a smile.

"Ms. Hawthorne!" Mrs. Bailey snapped. She had caught Samantha texting to one of her friends. Mrs. Bailey kept a calm face and said in a deadly whisper, "Ms. Hawthorne, if you are done texting, why don't you read your essay out loud?"

Samantha immediately put her phone down and went to the front of her class and said "I have written about a dream which I never really understood. I was walking in the woods where the leaves are made of Jell-O and trunks and stems are made of the hardest candy in the world. I was walking when I came across a huge castle made of ginger bread. The castle had a moat made entirely of juice. It had a drawbridge made of wood and ropes made of liquorice. I went inside the castle eager to find out who lived there. I saw a man sitting on a throne looking miserable. He had ocean blue eyes, pale skin and pearl white hair. All his advisors and ministers were coming to him only to give bad news. He was being told that his kingdom, the snowy kingdom, was not thriving. The citizens were not coming out of their houses and therefore were not growing or harvesting any crops and the land was drying up. I wish I could have seen more but right then alarm rang and I had to wake up for school. For me it was an abrupt ending. This concludes my essay." Mrs. Bailey stared at her for some time and then finally said "Thank you Ms. Hawthorne that was.... interesting." Samantha sat down thinking it may not have been as good as Blake's but at least she had an audience.

Blake and Samantha went home thinking about what they had said in class and complimenting each other on it. "What you said was the truth and was basically what Mrs. Bailey wanted us to do. It was really interesting and I am happy the class listened to what you said." Blake said. "Don't bother. I know that it was a disaster and it will never be as good as yours Blake." Samantha replied. The twins kept on saying things like that to comfort each other and eventually reached home.

The twins saw their grandma standing outside their house with hands open and ready to hug. The moment the twins saw her they forgot about everything in the world. They could only think about their grandma, her open hands and her warm smile. They ran towards her in the as fast as their legs could take them and gave her a hug as she said "Oh my, you both have grown a year's worth since the last time I saw you." The twin's grandma used to say this every time she used to see them even if it wasn't true.

The twin's grandma had kind eyes, her hair was short, messy and silver in color and she always wore an Indian dress. She gave the tightest hugs and had a melodious voice. The twins sometimes wondered that if she had so much more energy than a normal grandma, she might have been living on caffeine.

Before the twins left for lunch, their grandma gave them their presents. Her black convertible's back seat was full of them. Blake got some of his favourite books in different languages and some first edition books. Samantha got new records and a pet guinea pig. The Hawthorne family went together for lunch to the twins' favourite restaurant and went back home so that grandma could get a start on dinner.

Richard had bought them new bicycles and Ashley had bought Blake an autographed book from his favourite author, Samantha got a special edition of her favourite video game.

Dinner was the best part of the day as grandma had made it. She made some sheesh kebabs, spaghetti and meatballs and baked Alaska.

Just as grandma was about to leave, she said "Oh! I almost forgot my greatest gift of all to you. It is my dream journal. This has been passed from generation to generation in our family. Make sure you record your best dreams in this." Blake hesitated to take it at first but in the end took it excited that he was holding an ancestral object.
