Phoenix arrived within a short period of time. Getting out of the car she sprinted towards the hospital entrance asking the front desk for the patients information.
Getting the information Phoenix sprinted towards the loading elevator and pressed her floor. Arriving at the fifth floor, she panted as she tried to catch her breath with her hands on her knees.
Troy who was the first one to notice her presence approached her with a bottle of water. Taking it from his hands, she gulped down a mouthful trying to calm down. Looking towards the operation theatre, she saw the red light above the door still on and she furrowed her eyebrows.
Troy who stood by her side understood her gestures and opened his mouth to speak, " it's been about twenty minutes since he went in and the doctor said it may take about an hour or so."
Realising that she was still standing by the elevator, Phoenix scratched her nose awkwardly. " Huh? Oh oh!, Well am sorry am late, was kinda held up at work. Let's find somewhere to sit, am so tired from running." She said as she looked around for empty seats.
She found seats by the window but before she went to sit down, she greeted the Paulson family elders together with Neil and Lydia. They conversed for sometime before walking to her seat.
Phoenix sat down while wiping the sweat at the back of her neck.
Mother Paulson shortly joined them pushing Troy away. She eyed the young lady as she smiled noticing her dishevelled state.
" Did you rush here?"
Phoenix laughed awkwardly as she remembered her haggard appearance and messy hair after looking at herself on the elevator doors. She combed through her hair with her fingers trying to smoothen her ponytail.
" Just a minor problem at work. Had to solve it and I ended up forgetting to check the time so I rushed and ran along the way. And what did the doctor say?"
" No worries, just some precautionary measures, don't worry about your efforts for the past weeks as they won't go to waste. I believe in my son, he is a fighter so he will pull through this time and even if it doesn't work out, am sure he will force it to work out cause he is in a hurry to see again." Replied Connie as she patted Phoenix's hand and smiled.
Troy who sat next to his mother smiled as he thought of how his brother was nervous yesterday.
_ ' was he worried of not seeing Butterfly's hands. Surely love knows no boundaries. And watch out Lizzy Morgan am sure you will regret your decision.'_
" Is this his first surgery?" Phoenix asked as she took a look at the OP doors.
" It's his fourth, the last three had been rejections so he stopped trying to nurture his system back and we were afraid that repeated surgeries could damage his eyes further."
The two women talked for a while before the operation theatre doors opened. The head surgeon came out and walked towards the gathered family members. He scanned them before opening his mouth to speak. This made the family nervous as he took his time.
" Was it successful doctor?" Asked Grandpa Paulson as he moved a few steps forward.
" The surgery was successful but as I said there would be side effects such as increased pressure and itching. It will take a few days so the system gets to accept the changes so he should wear eye shield for protection. That will reduce infection and encourage quick healing. As the food he should take, include greens into his diet, fruits such a bananas....." The doctor rattled on.
" As there are no further questions, I will excuse myself and the patient will be wheeled back to his ward for monitoring considering his surgical history and will discharge him tomorrow. Now if you will excuse me."
After his long speech, the surgeon excused himself as he walked away with his assistant as the others wheeled Jade to his ward. His eyes had a white layer covering them.
Grandpa Paulson was the first one to enter into the room after the nurses went out. He walked forward and took a seat by the chair next to the bed. The others entered too while Phoenix stood by the door. Mother Paulson beckoned her to enter and take a seat.
Phoenix stood there staring at the figure on the bed.
_' finally he is gonna be free and able to see again, I wonder what is his eye colour as I have never seen them before.'_ she asked herself.
_' will he still need me as a friend now that he is gonna start seeing again? Sigh, I guess not as he is gonna go back to his previous life with a lots of friends. Whatever, I have to stop being insecure like a new bride ahhh.'_
Mother Paulson who heard her sigh turned to look at her.
" Why are you sighing, are you uncomfortable somewhere? If you feel uncomfortable sitting here you can stroll around in the garden."
Phoenix stiffened as she heard the question. She couldn't say out her thoughts. "Nothing, I just thought about something." She said to free herself.
Phoenix was like a daughter the Paulson family never had. Mother Paulson loved her like a mother would love her own daughter. It's a pity that she wasn't her own daughter nor her daughter in-law. Though she already had a daughter in-law she was close to, they weren't that close as Lydia was an army doctor therefore she spent little time at home.
