Chapter 38 - The Day 8

Ryan and Lily sat side by side on the small sofa in the observation room. Ryan put his arm around Lily and kept trying to make her feel comfortable after Lily cried in his arms. Meanwhile, Matthew was standing near the observation room door with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

Matthew lowered his head and closed his eyes. He tried to focus on himself while listening to all the sounds in his ears. Matthew listens to Lily's heartbeat, Ryan, and the small animals around her. He even hears the sound of the rustling of the leaves outside the laboratory building.

All the sounds overlapped in his ears, so he had to focus and filter which sound he should listen to. Suddenly Matthew's attention drew to a male voice inside the laboratory building. Matthew listened carefully to the words that came out of the man.

"General. Dream squad. The perfect source," Matthew muttered.

Ryan, who heard Matthew's words, immediately turned to him. "What are you talking about?"

"Silent! I'm trying to listen to someone's voice in this building," Matthew answered without opening his eyes.

Lily was taken aback by what Matthew had said. She looked at Matthew in disbelief. "You can hear that far?"

Matthew didn't answer Lily's question and continued to focus his attention on the male voice he was hearing. Lily waited for an answer from Matthew without saying much. She let Matthew focus on what he was doing.

After a while, Matthew finally regained his head. He looked directly at Lily and Ryan in turn. "Looks like the military is heading here."

Lily and Ryan together frowned.

"Why did the military come here?" Ryan asked.

"Someone invited them to come here," said Matthew.

Ryan muttered under his breath. "What nonsense are you talking about?"

"I heard it myself. It's up to you to believe me or not. The male voice that I heard said General many times. And now the General seems to have sent his troops to come here," Matthew explained.

Lily was silent. "It's just us and Max in the lab at the moment. I don't think the Research Assistant could do that. So the possibility remains, Max. But why did Max contact the military?"

"Who's Max?" Matthew asked.

Lily looked at Matthew with a long sigh. "He's my father's assistant."

"Is he the man who brought me back to the storage room?" Matthew asked Lily again.

Lily nodded her head.

"No wonder his voice sounded familiar," said Matthew.

"Wait. Hold on! I still haven't found a connection between Max and the military," Ryan said.

Ryan then looked at Lily. "Is Max secretly cooperating with the military?"

Lily shook her head.

"No, or don't know?" Ryan asked.

"I don't know. As far as I know, Max has been here for a long time, and he is my father's assistant," Lily replied.

Matthew suddenly asked Lily and Ryan to be quiet. "Shut up. It looks like someone's on their way here. I heard the sound of helicopters in the distance. We'd better get out of here."

"Why are we leaving here?" said Ryan.

Matthew immediately turned his attention to Ryan. "If my hunch is right, the military must be after Lily or me. Nothing ends well when it comes to the military."

"I've got to check with Max straight away," Lily said. She then just left the observation room to look for Max's whereabouts.

Matthew and Ryan stared at each other.

"You wait here. Let me take care of Lily," said Matthew.

Ryan hadn't had time to answer Matthew's words when Matthew disappeared from before him in the blink of an eye. Ryan sighed softly. He sat back down on the small sofa in the observation room and pulled out his cell phone.

"Hi, Hannah. I have to re-arrange my vacation. You can set up everything for me, right?" Ryan said as soon as Hannah answered the phone.

"Are you continuing your vacation with Lily?" asked Hannah.

Matthew laughed softly at Hannah's question. "That's my hope. But it turns out that something unexpected happened here, and I have to accompany Lily."

"Okay. Just tell me if you need anything. I'll arrange it for you," Hannah said.

"Thank you, Hannah."

"Anytime."

Ryan put his phone back into his pocket and leaned back against the sofa. He then returned to silence while waiting for Lily and Matthew to return.

----

"Max!" Lily shouted as she entered the control room.

Max was surprised by Lily's sudden presence. He immediately turned off the monitor screen to hide the data transfer process he was doing. After that, Max tried to be reasonable with Lily.

"Lily! I've been waiting for you," Max said with a small smile.

"What are you doing, Max?" Lily asked. She saw Max, who deliberately turned off the monitor screen in front of him.

"I didn't do anything," Max replied.

"I saw you turned off the monitor screen," said Lily. She then walked over to Max.

While still staring at Max, Lily turned on the monitor screen Max had just turned off. Lily kept an eye on Max's seemingly unusual movements. As soon as the monitor screen in front of Max lit up again, Lily immediately turned her attention to the monitor screen.

Her eyes widened in disbelief when she saw what Max was doing. The man moves all research data into cloud storage that does not belong to the laboratory.

Lily then looked back at Max. "Explain to me, Max. What does all this mean?"

"I'm just moving the data to keep it safe from the Police investigation," Max replied.

"He's lying," Matthew interrupted.

Max immediately turned his attention to Matthew. He swallowed his saliva as Matthew walked toward him.

"I don't have to come close to know your lies. Your heartbeat is beating very fast. It means you are hiding something," said Matthew.

Max just blinked when Matthew suddenly stood in front of him. Matthew stared intently at Max. "I can hear everything you're talking about."

Max looked at Matthew in disbelief. Max's face suddenly lit up. He laughed as he looked at Matthew, standing in front of him in disbelief. "You're perfect, Matt. Graff must be very proud of the result."

"Since when did you call my father by his name?" interrupted Lily.

Max then turned his attention to Lily. "Oh, dear Lily. I do respect your father. But his idealism got in the way of the big changes he could make. Look at Matthew now. With his physicality and speed, we can use him for other things. That doesn't include his hearing ability which has also improved tremendously."

"Don't forget the fact that right now I want to suck your blood, Max," said Matthew. He clenched his fists as he looked at Max. Matthew's pupils constricted, and his eye color changed almost completely.

Max chuckled softly. "Do it. I don't mind."

The changes that happened to Matthew impressed Max. He didn't even dodge when Matthew's head came close to his neck. Max is like a man about to reach orgasm.

But what Max expected did not happen because Lily held Matthew's hand. "Stop it, Matt. It's not you."
