“Hello, dear. It’s lovely to meet you.”
The older woman, who wore a plain maid’s uniform, greeted Scarlett with a smile and a hug. She was treating her very well for a stranger. Unless, to her, she wasn’t one.
Greta chuckled at Scarlett’s stuttered, hesitant questions.
“I’ve never met you, but I know Rowan’s handwriting, dear—and he doesn’t write out an invitation to just anyone. If he gave you that note, then it means he wants you here. Now, come in, come in!” She smiled warmly, hustling Scarlett inside the giant building.
The inside was terrifyingly pristine, and Scarlett felt even more out of place than before. But Greta was nice and didn’t make her feel lesser for it, despite how she easily could have.
“Rowan’s not here at the moment—his father’s working him to the bone for pulling that disappearing stunt—but he shouldn’t be too much longer. Have you eaten?”
