Chapter 1 - Burned Village

There is no quiet night if there is a great fire that illuminates the grim night with screams of the people like a song and follows by the people's dance in a bonfire at festival time. But this isn't a festival. It's a village burning in a sea of fire.

The People were running in a panic, trying to save their lives, it wasn't a fire that made them panic, but the village was being raided by a group of people. Some people had bad luck. They might have stepped on and got trapped in burning buildings or were killed by the people who attacked them.

The group of people who attacked them was not an army of bandits or a gang of petty thieves but a group of soldiers in full armor with an eagle symbol on their chest, signifying a unitary army from a neighboring kingdom that is now looting them in the times of war.

People who still survived flocked to save themselves in the forest, whether running with their legs or away on horseback. The only thing on their minds right now was one thing. Get out safely from this mess by any means.

But it does not apply to a husband and wife who are seen helping old people and children into a horse wagon to rescue them all from the village.

The couple named Arlan and Rias looks keen on helping the villagers. Arlan can use a sword to buy time to hold back the soldiers attacking them. While Rias deftly allows parents and children who have difficulty getting into the wagon.

"Honey, this is the last wagon," Rias told Arlan as he carried a six-year-old child into the horse wagon. Rias's eyes were repeatedly seen glancing around. She was trying to find other people who might still be left behind.

"There is no more. Come on, we have to go!" Rias continued with his hand, trying to reach him.

"Go first! You must take care of our children. I will slow them down!" Arlan replied as He was busy swinging his sword against the soldiers, trying to get closer to the horse wagon.

With a swift movement, a soldier ran past Him, trying to approach the wagon. Swiftly Arlan chased after the soldier, trying to stop His movement by strangling him with his arms, but that only made Him realize as he looked back that there were many waves of soldiers coming through here.

Arlan turns his head, looking at the wagon. With that quick turn, a lot of sweat sweeps away on his forehead, "hurry up! Before it's too late!" Arlan shouted in a hoarse tone, as if out of breath while still holding the soldier.

Looking at his eyes blazing with no regret makes Rias understand his decision. Still, as a wife, she can't bear to look at him as she regrets his husband's decision while she quickly turns his head, "Uncle, hurry up!" Rias said to the coachman and made the horse swiftly run away.

Though she regrets his decision, Rias knows they are only a burden to him. Even if he jumped into the wagon, there was still a chance that they would chase this wagon even with their barefoot.

"Wait, why are we running? Father is still there, mom!" Said the boy while his arms pointed at Arlan as He watched him.

"Don't look at that! I told you to keep your eyes closed," Rias said as she hugged him so tightly to keep him from seeing his father kill someone.

"But Father still-," The boy said, interrupted.

"Believe in your father, son. He will catch up with us!" Rias said as she looked into his beautiful, innocent eyes, watching him. While her hand stroked his head, trying to calm him down.

The boy's eyes looked special because he had two distinct irises. His right eye was a sapphire blue, like his father's, while his left was a ruby red, like his mother's. He has black hair and white skin like his parents. Only his eyes made him different from them.

They went into the dense forest, trying to escape by using the darkness to hide, and so far, no one had caught up to them. But in the dark, a voice could be heard, so terrifying.

"Hiyaa… Hiya!"

The sound that came from behind them was followed by the footsteps of the horses flocking. It was the horse archer that was following them. The troops were getting closer to the wagon, and they could catch up, let alone knowing this wagon was so slow because it was carrying so many people.

The horse archers pointed their bows when they saw they were within its reach, and drawing their bows continuously showered them with a rain full of arrows.

"OH, MY GOD!"

"WE ARE DEAD!"

The screams of the people in the horse wagon who seemed unable to stay still when the troop's arrows rained down on them. There was no way the arrows didn't hit them because there was nothing to protect them in this open wagon.

Rias hugged her child again so tightly, trying to protect him from the arrows raining down on them, and it was a miracle to know the troops had stopped shooting their arrows at them.

"Mother! Look! that's Father!" The boy said while He was pointing at the troops behind them.

This boy's eyesight was so sharp, even in the dark, he could see a man riding the horse quickly and overtaking the troops. He sees Arlan chasing them and distracting them, so they can easily escape.

"Mom is right. Father is following us. Look over there..." The boy said again while He was suddenly silent.

The child could only be silent when His mother gently stroked His cheek with a touch of a hand that felt cold, and at that moment, He saw her mother's face, which was so pale but firmly put a smile on her face.

Rias tried to make her child not worry. She endured the pain even though an arrow stuck in her back.

"Mom, holds on! Father will save us. We will survive!" Repeated the boy reassuringly with a stiff smile like he was unsure of his own words.

The boy suddenly fell silent when he heard a familiar scream in his ear. Using sharp eyesight, he looked at the back of the wagon. He sees his father, who was covered in blood and killed on his horse due to holding back the troops, making his eyes sad until he's immediately sobbing while hugging his mother.

"Good things will come, don't be sad, Alev. Didn't I tell you to close your eyes? I don't want your beautiful eyes to see terrible things," Rias said softly as she stroked her child's tiny cheeks again.

The troops again showered them with arrows. Rias, who heard the sound of the arrows they released, immediately hugged her child again.

But this time, the arrows rained down on them so hard they hit everyone, including the horse pulling the wagon, and dragged the wagon upside down on the side of the track.

The child named Alev was still breathing in his mother's arms, and a dark cloud suddenly appeared to cover the horse wagon and made the horses of the nearby troops scream in fear at seeing a strange thing happen and run swiftly away from the wagon.

A tall person in a black robe wearing a skull mask emerged from the dark cloud. He is the Death itself.

"Poor child," The Death said while looking at the fainted Alev

The Death pointed with its finger at Alev until a spirit itself emerged from Alev's body.

The spirit looked back at the death. He narrowed his eyes as he pointed his finger at him.

"Idiot! What does this mean? Who said I was dead? Alev told as he was scolding him in his spirit body.
