Chapter 18 - One thing leads to another

While the Fire-Bearers dealt with the remaining Mana-Wielders, me and Lorenzo had to fight this mountain of a man.

He held his spear in his right and let it touch the ground with the sharp tip facing up. Now that I could see the spear clearly, I noticed something odd about his spear. The materials that were used to create this spear were unknown to me. The dark-brown, wooden handle that had a length of 190 centimeters radiated a dark pressure that seemed to eat and consume the Mana around it to maintain its form. The blade on top was 25 centimeters long and was made out of a material that looked like normal steel but had vein-like lines running through it. Even though there were „veins" running through the blade, the blade still looked pure. So pure that my Katana was put to shame.

„What kind of spear is that?" I asked the big guy.

He didn't respond immediately, he only looked around Sky Plaza that was surrounded in Mana-Flames.

„Am I in [hell]?" He asked, but I couldn't understand the last word he had said.

His facial expression changed from angry to worried and confused.

„You're re in Central Superio. You'll live if you run away now." I gave him the chance to survive, as I wasn't sure if I was capable enough to fight him.

The big guy looked at me and took on a stance. He grabbed the spear with both hands and held it on his right side. The blade was pointing directly at my heart, and even though there was a significant distance between us, I still felt as if the tip of the blade could ram into my chest and pierce my heart in a second.

„This spear is the gods' gift." The big guy said.

‚What is he on? What does he mean by gods? Is he crazy?' I question inwardly.

The big guy shot forward with an immense speed. He was almost as fast as me when I used Supreme-Control.

I couldn't match his speed, making me ‚weigh less' was stupid in this situation. Small contact would be enough to make me go flying. Hell, I wasn't even sure if he could do it even when I ‚weighed more'.

He thrusted his spear forward at my chest, but before he reached me, I took on a stance that allowed me to defend against tall spearmen. I held my sword right in front of my face with the sharp edge facing my opponent. I lowered my stance to have more blood pump into my thighs.

When his spear entered my range, I held my blade right in front of it.

*Clang*

I managed to parry his attack but it was still too close for comfort.

„Lorenzo! Attack on my signal!" I ordered.

I had no plan to defeat this spearman. He was stronger than all of us combined. I wondered how it was even possible for Tsuki's ability to feel that I wasn't going to die.

I wanted to question everything, but then it hit me. I knew that someone was going to die, so I could use anyone in the group to be a human shield. That would create a small opening in the man's defence.

While dodging and parrying the spearman's blows, I noticed the other 3 Fire-Bearers running towards us.

‚It's time to go on with the plan.' I realized.

„Attack him in a pattern and evade his spear at all cost!" I ordered.

The Fire-Bearers nodded and readied themselves. Blades and brass knuckles were drawn and imbued with fiery Mana.

The spearman was surrounded at this point. 5 Bearers and a fire-wall that was closing in.

I held my Katana in a reverse grip and made myself ‚lighter'. I charged, and swung my blade at his chest, but he easily parried it.

*Rumble*

But this time the sound of blades clashing was overturned by a thunder strike not far away.

„Next!" I yelled and expected someone else to continue the assault on the spearman.

Mete rushed forward and tried to stab the spearman with his fiery hunting knife, but he was thrown away by him. Then, Amar tried to slash the spearman's arm with his fiery weapon, but he too was thrown away.

At that point, the first raindrops started to fall, the first raindrops I'd seen in months. When a raindrop landed on my arm, I noticed something that would screw up my plan. The raindrops had Mana in them, every single raindrop had Mana in it.

This meant that the watery Mana would fall onto the fiery Mana and weaken it to the point where the wall of flames would just go out, making it possible for the spearman to escape or reinforcements to come.

„Don't use your Salan ability!" I ordered, but the sound of the rain and the flames surrounding us was know louder than my voice. I had no way of communicating with the others. If I tried stopping anyone of them, the constant pressure on the spearman would fade, and he would be able to hurt us. I had to wait for the perfect opportunity, the opportunity for someone to die.

Minutes passed and the storm worsened, weakening both the fire-wall and Fire-Bearers.

I dashed forward again, my Mana-Core only contained half of its capacity. I then tried stabbing the spearman, but this time, I loosened my grip on my Katana. His parry catapulted my Katana away, leaving a small opening in his guard. But before he could attack my unarmed self, Luca roared and used the last Mana in his Mana-Core. Luca stood behind the spearman and erupted into flames. He dashed forward and prepared his strongest attack.

„Phoenix fist!" He yelled.

The spearman turned around and reinforced his entire body with Mana.

A wave of heat and Mana shot out of them. What I saw next was Luca being impaled through the chest with the spear while having his brass knuckled fist on the spearman's stomach.

Luca had managed to land a critical blow on the spearman, but that was all. He died immediately, his heart pierced and his Mana-Core empty.

I didn't let this chance go and used Independent-Control. I placed a gravitation point on my right palm and my Katana, I made the Katana gravitate into my hand. I jumped up and swung my blade down on the spearman who tried to pull the spear out of Luca's body.

The spearman turned around and held up his right arm. It was reinforced with with Mana but that couldn't stop me. I used Supreme-Control and made myself ‚heavier' and slashed cleanly through his underarm.

„AAAGH!"

I heard 2 screams, one coming from the wounded spearman and one coming from Lorenzo who now realized that his little brother had died.

„Luca! No!" Lorenzo cried out. He rushed over to his dead brother with tears in his eyes. He hugged Luca tightly and sobbed all over his hot body. Lorenzo's tears evaporated immediately when they touched Luca's body.

When I saw Lorenzo's reaction to his brother's death, I wondered why my brother knowingly left me to die. „Was I not his brother? Didn't he love me or my parents? What did we do to make him hate us?" I questioned myself. The feeling of brotherly love wasn't in my heart, only a feeling of emptiness, disgust and envy was there when I thought about Haru.

When I regained focus, I saw the spearman holding the spear in his left arm.

„Still not finished?" I asked.

„No." He answered.

„What is your name, Nordic spearman?"

„Geir Angerboda. And you are?"

„Niam Henka."
