After the plane had landed, I got shaken awake by the stewardess.
"The plane has landed ma'am." She said quietly and also apologetically, "I'm sorry to have woken you."
I replied, chuckling a little, "You're just doing your job, and that's what matters, thank you."
I grabbed my carry-on bag and un-boarded, heading down to the baggage claim. As I was waiting for my suitcase, I smelled someone familiar close by me. It scared me because as far as I knew, no one knew I was coming home. "Unless Kiah called Kyle." I thought to myself.
Kyle was an old family friend. His father, mine, and Kiah's were best friends. Kyle was who I spent ten years growing up with before I went to Europe. The last time I had seen him was the month before at my birthday party. I was so happy to see his dirty blond head of hair show up on the doorstep. It was so lovely to laugh with him again, his goofy smile and his deep blue eyes, laughing with you, or at you, depending on who the joke was on.
As I turned around to smell again, there he was, 5'6 skinny ass frame. Don't get me wrong here, he is strong, but he is thin. I guess that's what happens when a vampire stops feeding on human blood.
I smiled at him kindly and nodded my head, and quietly asked, "How did you know I was coming home?"
He laughed a little and replied sarcastically, "What, this is your home?" He walked over to me and hugged me, "You already know how I know."
I sighed, "Of course, he would contact you because he couldn't portal walk and beat me here." laughing a little as I thought about Kiah.
Werewolves can't portal walk; they neither have the power nor the mind to do it. No one knows why. They have brute strength and agile minds. They've tried many times to try and harness the powers that come with portal walking, like injecting vampires, or even portal walkers' blood, but all subjects they tried it on, had died.
I looked at Kyle, then got a stern look on my face, "Please don't tell me you made any kind of promise to Kiah about watching me and protecting me because he can't."
He looked at me, annoyed, "No I didn't make that promise to Kiah," pausing for a second, "I made that promise to your father."
I gasped, looked him in the eyes, and asked, "Do you know where they are?" Hoping his answer was yes.
He looked down sadly, "No."
I turned back to the baggage claim and picked up my suitcase as it came by, walked back over to Kyle, "I guess it's time I find out what happened."
He opened a portal while no one was watching, and we headed off to his apartment. When we got there, I set my stuff down and smirked.
"Are you sure you're a vampire?" I asked sarcastically. "Because you sure have gotten better at doing that, I'm glad my dad's teachings got through your thick head."
Vampires, like portal walkers, could open and travel through the portals of the world, but it came at a deadly cost. Vampires believe that human blood is everything; it's what helps them survive. Harvesting humans is their world. To retain the power to portal walk as a vampire, they have to keep that thirst for human blood at bay and hunt animals. To subdue their bloodlust for human blood gives them access to their subconscious mind, where that power is hidden. The downfall is that after so many years, centuries, or even decades, vampires that have been portal walking, lose their strength.
I studied Kyle a little closer and realized that the portal walking was getting to him; he looked skinnier than ever before.
He smiled, a sarcastic hint in his eyes, "There are just some things about me that are still very mysterious."
I turned to him quickly, "So, tell me everything you know, and don't skip anything that you think might hurt me." I finished staring straight into his deep blue eyes.
He sighed and sat down in the black lazy boy recliner, his color of choice. He rubbed his temples as he sat down.
"Your father is going to be so angry with me, when, if he finds out you've come home." He shook his head and trembled a little.
I scoffed. "It's his own God damn fault I came home, and we can rub that in his face when he finds out." I rolled my eyes and plopped down on his blue couch, laughing a little as I laid down across its cushions. "Just humor me, Kyle, are they alive?"
He smiled and leaned back in his chair, pulling the lever. "Of course they are alive; they're just hiding from everyone."
I shook my head, "Where would they hide without telling someone, or giving us some sort of hint or trail for only us to figure out?" I asked quietly to myself. "So what happened?" my eyes glazed over with worry.
He sighed, taking a deep breath, "Somehow, your father found out that they knew about you. He told me he didn't know the source, but I swear he just didn't want to tell me. The last thing I remember before he went into hiding was if you came home, to watch you and protect you any way I can. That he would lead them away from your trail somehow, with the help of Cole and Scott." He finished with a sigh.
I stood up, outraged, "SCOTT!" I screamed, "What in the hell!" I was ready to hit anything. I was so pissed off that my dad still trusted him after what he did to me. "Why does he need that bastard's help, he could have killed me if Kiah wasn't around!"
Kyle stood up as fast as I had in my rage, grabbed my hands and replied aggressively, defensively even, "When you see him, Yelena, you can thank him that you are alive, along with your father and your brother."
I stared at him blankly, dropping my gaze, and replied in a flat tone, "I refuse to thank him for anything." I sat down on his couch again and folded my arms over my chest, as I drifted back in my memory of 2 years ago.
