Chapter 23 - Beasts vs Monsters (Part 5)

The Grendel charged forward at the oldest moltaur and swung it's fire blade at the moltaur's neck. The moltaur raised it's spear to intercept the blade. As the two weapons connected the other two moltaurs charged at the back of the Grendel. The swung in unison at it's back, the moltaur with the axe went for the lower back and the moltaur with the claws went for the upper back.

The Grendel intercepted the axe with it's second blade and then bent over to avoid the claws of the other moltaur. The oldest moltaur stepped back to not be hurt by his own ally. The other moltaurs did the same and reset their formation. "You guys are a lot of fun. Let's see if you can keep up with me." The Grendel said while laughing sadistically and then disappearing.

The three moltaurs looked around to find the Grendel but it was moving too fast for their eyes to keep up with. The Grendel appeared in front of one of the moltaurs and swung it's darkness blade while infusing it with mana. The blade glowed in a dark shade of black and then five tendrils of darkness magic came out of it.

The first tendril extended off the tip of the blade to increase it's length. The other four charged at the moltaur's limbs. The moltaur reacted to this attack by using it's claws to send four air blades infused with darkness magic at the four tendrils charging at it. The moltaur then dived down into the ground. The darkness magic collided with each other creating an explosion of magic.

The Grendel smirked at it's enemy and then turned around to the other too. The moltaur was panting underground and trying to recover it's mana because it had to use a lot to equal the amount of mana in the Grendel's tendrils. However, the Grendel was perfectly fine, it felt like it had used barely any magic and fit to continue fighting.

The oldest moltaur realised this and was shocked as it was a lot of magic and the Grendel seemed perfectly fine. He looked at his younger brother and then said, "Leave now! He is too strong for you!" The other moltaur had never seen his brother in such a state and understood that the threat before them had to be something extreme to get his brother to react like that.

He immediately dived into the ground and disappeared as the Grendel swung it's blade where the moltaur was a split-second before. The Grendel turned towards it's final opponent and smiled, "You seem to be a worthy foe. You understood my power level and are even putting your life on the line for your allies. I don't know if you know this, but I have been holding back this whole time. I hope you have too otherwise this is going to be boring."

'I thought as much he kept increasing his power as we fought which is impossible for a Grendel to do. Good thing I sent my brother away otherwise he would most definitely die. I need to hold him here as long as I can.' The moltaur thought to it's self. The Grendel smiled at his opponent and then shouted what seemed to be a battle cry.

It charged at the moltaur and swung it's fire blade. The blade increased in temperature until it would be able to cut through rock as if it was butter. The moltaur poured mana into it's blade and then sent it's spear past the Grendel's blade four times with a gust of wind behind each strike. The spear never hit the Grendel or it's blade, it was cooling down the fire blade so that it could block it. The fire blade cooled down and the moltaur blocked the blade with the shaft of it's spear and deflected it to it's right.

The moltaur then pivoted on it's left foot and struck at the side of the Grendel with it's spear. The Grendel used the momentum from the deflection to spin on it's right foot and block the strike with it's darkness blade. As the two blades connected the Grendel infused the blade with mana and the blade to completely black. The moltaur jumped back as the darkness attacked the spear. The moltaur then examined it's spear and noticed that the darkness was weakening the integrity of the spear's metal.

The moltaur activated a spell that would repair it's spear, but it didn't work as the darkness had infiltrated the metal of the spear. The Grendel took advantage of the moltaur's break to charge at it with full force behind it's strike. The moltaur reacted in time so that the Grendel missed its intended target but then it screamed in pain.

The Grendel had aimed to cut the moltaur in half, from the head down, but the moltaur had shifted to the right just in time but ended up losing it's left arm in the process. The moltaur bent over in pain and the Grendel towered over it's weakened prey. "You should have run away with your allies when you realised how much of a gap there is between us."

"And you should have never come here in the first place." Said an unfamiliar voice. The Grendel turned to see who was speaking but then felt and incredible pressure fall onto it. The Grendel fell to one knee as the bloodlust from the new opponent overwhelmed it. The Grendel looked up to see a giant Phoenix perched on the top of the encirclement.

The Phoenix jumped off the top and landed in front of the Grendel while making a crater in the ground from the landing. The Phoenix walked closer to the Grendel one step at a time and with ever step the ground cracked under the pressure. The Phoenix had a very different aura to when Emily had seen it. It was extremely angry because the Grendel had hurt one of it's own. The Grendel thought that it was an ant compared to the Phoenix when in reality it was only slightly taller than the Grendel.

The Grendel tried to run away but it's body wouldn't move. "You think you can come into my territory and attack my people without any consequences." The Grendel kept it head faced down to not look into the eyes filled with mana that belonged to the Phoenix. "I have already taken your army out and I'm sure that Professor will be fine without my help but to think you would harm one of my own."

The Phoenix now stood right in front of the Grendel and was looking down on it, "Here is your punishment for coming here." A pillar of fire descended onto the Grendel and burnt it slowly while it screamed in agony until it died. The encirclement the fell down and the Phoenix healed the moltaur before leaving and heading towards the Year 1 dormitory.
