A gasp erupted from Kurmara's throat as she opened her eyes and laid in her bed, wide awake. She stared at her ceiling as sweat drenched her forehead and she was gasping for air. She sat up and put her hands on her head as she slowed her breathing, trying to remember what the dream was about. "What the hell was that?" She queried, rubbing her temples but her mind was still clouded with sleep which caused her to groan and flop back onto her pillows. The locks flashed in her mind, especially the green and pink ones which caused her to frown in confusion. "Does that mean I have a new Quirk? Why was that green one already there?" She asked herself, raising her hands above her. There was a knock at her door, a voice following after. "Kurmara, I hope you're awake." Eun voiced which made her shake her head and get out of bed. "Yeah, I'm almost ready, give me a second." She voiced as she began to put her uniform on. It was spring which meant that today was her first day at UA as a student. She opened her door and walked towards the front door, quickly putting her shoes on before slinging her bookbag over her shoulder.
"I'll see you when I get home," Kurmara called to her brother only for him to stop her. "Wait for a second," "Eun, if I don't leave now, I'll be late." She looked back at him and saw a soft smile on his face. "I'm proud of you." He voiced which made her tear up yet smile back before leaving. She walked down the street on a different route towards her school. The walk was slightly shorter compared to when she was in middle school, but that was only because of where her house was. Talk about lucky... She thought with a giggle. Once she was in the building, she walked down the huge hallways until she saw a giant door as well as the curly-haired boy. It looks like he's in the class with me.. Kurmara thought as she walked over to him. "Hey," she voiced and he turned his head towards her. "Oh uhm, hi..." Immediately, she could tell he wasn't used to talking with a girl which only made her giggle. "The hero course, I wonder what kind of people are on the other side." She tilted her head and he looked back at the door. "Only one way to find out." And with that, he opened the door to reveal the student council-like boy talking to another who had his leg up on the desk.
"Oh dear.." She sighed before letting out a small chuckle. "By the way, what's your name?" She asked the boy she met at the door. "Ah, I'm Izuku Midoriya... What's your name?" "I'm Kurmara Hayashi." She responded with a smile before looking back at the two other boys, the student council-like boy looking their way before he walked over to them right up to Midoriya. "I'm from Somei private academy.." "I heard you before... I'm Izuku Midoriya, pleased to meet you, Iida..." "Midoriya.. You... You perceived the true nature of that practical exam. While I did not... I misjudged you! I hate to admit it, but you were the superior candidate!" Kurmara let out a little laugh which caused Iida to look at her. "And what is your name, fellow student?" He asked as he turned towards her. "Ah, I'm Kurmara Hayashi." She told him and he nodded. "Ah! That curly hair!" A voice behind them spoke and they turned to see another girl. "You got in! Just like Present Mic said!! Makes sense though, that punch was awesome!" She said as she punched the air a bit and Midoriya became flustered. "No! I mean.. thank you for speaking on my behalf.. I mean..."
Kurmara smiled at the energy, hearing the bell ring. "If you're here to socialize, then get out." The three of them turned and saw someone on the ground in a sleeping bag. "This is.. the hero course." He then got out of it, standing up. "It took eight seconds for you to quiet down. Time is a precious resource. You lot aren't very rational, are you?" "So he's a Pro Hero too...?" She heard Midoriya mutter as they looked at him. "I'm your homeroom teacher, Shouta Aizawa, pleased to meet you." He greeted them before motioning at them all. "Quickly now. Change into your gym clothes and head out to the grounds." He told them all. I wonder what he'll have us do... Kurmara thought as she imagined a few things.
~ ~ ~
"--A test.. of our Quirks?!" "What about the entrance ceremony? Or our guidance lessons?" The short-haired girl, Uraraka, questioned their teacher. "No time to waste on that stuff if you want to become heroes. UA is known for its 'freestyle' educational system. That applies to us teachers as well." Kurmara looked at Aizawa, feeling just as confused as the rest of her classmates. "Softball throwing, the standing long jump, the fifty-meter dash, endurance running, side to side stepping, upper body training, seated toe touch. You did all these in middle school, yes? Your standard no-Quirks-allowed gym tests." Kurmara remembered how she did in all of those back in middle school and she let out a silent sigh. She only did mediocre on a few of those all while doing horrible at the rest. "--Bakugou. How far could you throw in middle school?" Aizawa asked a boy with a cold look on his face. "Sixty-seven meters." "Great. Now try it with your Quirk. Do whatever you need to, just don't leave the circle. Give it all you got." Kurmara and the rest of her classmates watched as he stretched a little before getting ready to throw it.
"Die!!" He shouted as he tossed the ball with an explosion that blew her hair back. "It's important for us to know our limits. That's the first rational step to figuring out what kinds of heroes you'll be." "Woah! This is awesome!" One of her classmates exclaimed. "Seven hundred and five meters? Seriously?" "So we can use our Quirks for real! Man, the hero course is great!" Kurmara was excited to be able to use her Quirks and put them to the test. "Awesome.. you say?" Everyone looked back at Aizawa once he spoke up again. "You're hoping to become heroes after three years here... And you think it'll be all fun and games?" The excitement soon left just as quick as it had appeared. "Right. The one with the lowest score across all eight events will be judged hopeless... and will be expelled." "Whaaaaaat?!" "Your fates are in our hands. Welcome. This is... the hero course at UA." Kurmara was nervous now, but she was determined to show her best so she wouldn't be kicked out on her first day. I can do this, I need to remember the hard work I've been doing. I can't let this opportunity pass.
"The lowest score will be expelled?" "It's only the first day! I mean, even if it weren't... that's totally unfair!" "Natural disasters.. highway pileups.. rampaging villains... Calamity is always right around the corner. I'd say that Japan is full of unfair things. Heroes are the ones.. who correct all that fairness." He's right.. Kurmara thought. There is a lot of unfairness going around and the only people who can legislate that are the heroes.. "--For the next three years... UA will run you through the wringer. That's Plus Ultra. Use your strength to overcome it all. So bring it." And just like that, the eight events began, the first one being the fifty-meter dash and the first two students were up, one of them being Iida. "Three point zero four seconds!" Student after student went until Kurmara was finally up to do it. She took a deep breath before running as fast as her legs could take her. "Six point seventeen seconds!" She stopped once she was at the end, trying to catch her breath. "That was.. faster than middle.. school..." She breathed out before walking towards the rest of the group to watch her classmates.
Up were Midoriya and the boy from the beginning, Bakugou. "--Explosive speed!" He shouted and soon he was ahead with explosions helping him move forward. "Four point thirteen seconds!" That was pretty fast, even with his quirk... Kurmara thought, impressed. The next three events went by, the Hayashi teen was not doing well for either of them. The fifth event was throwing and Kurmara wanted to test out her strength Quirk, but also wanted to test her wind so she was stuck debating on the two as she watched her classmates. When it was her turn, she decided to use her wind when she threw the ball, making it go pretty high and far. Uraraka was up next in throwing but ended up making it float all the way up with the Quirk but it still counted. "Infinity?!" "Woah! The infinity symbol actually popped up!" Her classmates talked about it as it was more impressive than anyone had done recently. Midoriya was next for it and she was worried. "Midoriya isn't doing very well.." Iida voiced what she was thinking and she nodded as she watched. "Well duh. He's a Quirkless runt!" Bakugou voiced, making Kurmara tilt her head at him.
"Quirkless?! So you haven't heard about his feats during the entrance exam?" "Huh?" He threw the ball, but it fell short. "Forty-six meters." "I 'erased' your Quirk." Aizawa voiced. "That ridiculous entrance exam... completely irrational when you consider someone like you got in." Kinda harsh.. Kurmara thought. "Erased?! Those goggles.. of course! He's the Eraser Hero, Eraser Head!" "Eraser? I've.. never heard of him." "I think I've heard his name before! He's an angler-type hero!" Her classmates murmured amongst themselves about their homeroom teacher. He walked closer to Midoriya, talking to him, but the class was a bit too far to hear what he was saying. After a bit, he walked away from him, making Kurmara sigh. "Seems like he received some special instruction." Iida voiced. "Yeah, the instruction to leave this school." Bakugou retorted as they all continued to watch. Midoriya then threw the ball with great force, tossing it far into the air which made everyone gasp. Just like with the punch... he surprised everyone.. Kurmara smiled as it reminded her of back at the entrance exam.
"Woo! Now that's a hero-like record if I ever saw one!" Uraraka exclaimed. "His finger appears to be swollen. Thinking back to the entrance exam.. what a strange Quirk..." "Stylishly done." "Pretty impressive." Kurmara joined them with the chatter. Suddenly, Bakugou rushed towards Midoriya at an explosive speed. "What the hell? Explain yourself, Deku!" He shouted at the boy. Just before he got any closer to him, binding was around him, stopping him in his tracks and diminishing his Quirk. "Geez. Stop using your Quirk already... I'm getting dry eye over here." Aizawa voiced, annoyed. "What a waste of time. Prepare for the next event." Both Kurmara and Uraraka walked over to Midoriya. "Is your finger okay?" She asked the curly-haired boy. "Ah.. yeah..." He responded as he held his hand, obviously in pain. Soon, they went through and events were over with Kurmara dreading the results. There were only three that she managed to get decent scores in, but the rest were terrible. "Moving along. Time for the results." Aizawa voiced and she tensed, nervous to find out what she got.
"Your total scores simply reflect your performance in each of the events. Explaining the process would be a waste of time, so all you get are the final rankings." She let out a small sigh as she looked down at her hands. "Also, I was lying about expelling someone." Kurmara looked up with a confused look after he said that, three of her classmates were doing the same. "That was a rational deception.. meant to bring out the best in all of you." "Whaaaat?!" Kurmara and her classmates said in unison. "Anyway, we're done here. Your documents about the curriculum and such are back in the classroom. Give them a look." Kurmara stood there in shock with a mix of relief but was still slightly confused. So.. it was a bluff about the expulsion. That's a relief. She thought with a sigh before remembering what her final rank was. I might've done alright, but I'm still below the rest of the class... However, I'm not going to give up! I've still got to learn!
* * *
After the classes were over, Kurmara headed home, her mind still replaying the day over and over as she walked down the streets. If that's how today was, I can't even begin to imagine what the rest of the school year would be like... She thought as she shook her head. "Man, I don't know if I can get through this.." She doubted herself for a moment before pinching her cheeks. "Come on, what would Eun think if he heard that? Of course you can do this! After all, he helped you work your ass off before the exams, so you shouldn't quit." She said to herself as she turned towards her neighbourhood. "You're Kurmara Hayashi! You deserve to be at this school just as much as everyone else who worked hard to get in!" She walked down the street towards her house, noticing a car parked in front of the house. "Whose car.." She walked up to the door and opened it. "Eun, I'm home." She announced as she slid her shoes off and walked further into the house only to be surprised by her Aunt picking her up. "There she is! My hero-in-training niece!" She voiced with a laugh which caused Kurmara to look at her in surprise.
"Aunt Da-eun!" She set the fourteen-year-old down before hugging her. "It's good to see you again kiddo." "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be working?" Kurmara questioned her aunt before the two pulled away. "Yeah, I should be, but unfortunately I'm on leave for a while." Her aunt voiced which caused her to give a confused look. "What do you mean? What happened?" The older woman pointed down and the teen looked to see her aunt's leg wrapped up. "How did that happen?" She voiced with worry as she looked back up at the adult. "Ah, I was helping some other heroes save some civilians from a burning building when it collapsed and caught me under it, breaking my leg." She responded as she hobbled towards the couch. "That sounds like it hurt... I'm glad you're okay though. Wait, if your leg is broken, how could you pick me up?" She queried, which made Da-eun laugh. "Kid, my leg is broken, not my back or arms." "Oh.." She put a hand on Kurmara's head. "Enough about me, I want to hear how your first day at UA went." She turned her body towards her niece who giggled before sighing.
"If I'm honest, it was kind of tough. It might've only been my first day, but I'm already below everyone else besides two other people in my class." She responded, looking down at her lap. "I feel like the hard work I put in won't be enough and I'll stay below everyone... I feel like I won't become a hero like you and Dad.." She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked to see Da-eun have a soft look on her face. "I know that it can seem difficult or maybe impossible when it comes to your goal, but I want you to know that you can do it. Hell, you're a Hayashi so of course you can do it." Kurmara gave her a small smile before looking back down. "I just want to be able to be the best like how you and Dad turned out. I mean, look at you two, you're both heroes." "Yeah, well, that doesn't mean we also didn't struggle when we went to that school." Her aunt voiced which made her look up again. "What do you mean? If you are heroes, that means you must've been the best." Her aunt shook her head. "Just because we're the best now, doesn't mean we didn't have a hard time when it came down to trying to become heroes."
Kurmara turned her body towards her, showing her full attention which made Da-eun laugh. "Well, when it came to training us, both I and your father had a hard time trying to get it right. We might have Quirks, but we were expected to be able to do so much more. We both always ended up failing more times than I can remember." She laughed. "I think my brother had a harder time than me. He always wanted to make sure everything he did was perfect, no matter how much he got hurt. I think he got on Recovery Girl's nerve for the many times he's been there." They both giggled before she continued. "Even your grandma and grandpa wanted him to take it easy, but he never listened. After school, he kept trying to train, no matter how many times he got hurt or how many times he failed." She sighed before sitting back on the couch. "I remember trying to talk to him about it and how he didn't have to try so hard or overwork himself. We argued about it until it turned into a fight with neither of us winning." Da-Eun laughed, making Kurmara giggle.
"We ended up talking about how he should take it easy on the whole Quirk training to get better. Jintao argued a bit more, but he finally agreed and took it easy. Now look at him, a Pro Hero with a wife and two amazing kids." She hugged the teen who laughed. "So I hope you understand, even if you're having a hard time, it doesn't stray you any further from the goal you want to achieve. It helps you." Kurmara nodded before hearing the front door open and got up to greet her brother with a hug. "Woah! Well hello to you too miss high school student." Eun chuckled as he returned the hug. "How was your first day as a high school student and a hero-in-training?" He asked before pulling away. "Ah, well.. it was tough, I'm not going to lie. Oh! And our homeroom teacher is Eraser Head!" She bounced a little when she told them. "Really? You have a Pro Hero as a homeroom teacher?" He queried and she nodded vigorously with a smile. "What was it like? Your classes, I mean." And like that, Kurmara told her brother and aunt about her first day as a UA high school student, not missing any details from her day which made her brother happy.
He just hoped her high school life would be better and different compared to her life in middle school.
