It was a normal thursday afternoon, college students walking to their classes like every other day. The warm spring breeze blowing the fresh scent of flower and rainwater from the night before.
As we walk through the main courtyard I say, "We're almost done with our last semester," I say looking at my two friends.
"Sure, sure," Isabella says smiling, "maybe for you, but me and Isaac both have a whole 'nother year to deal with."
"Yeah speak for yourself, Zeke." Isac says nudging my left arm with his elbow. "Too bad we wont be seeing you around as much with that big coorporate job you got lined up, you'll be busy as a bee."
I laugh, scruffing up his hair, "What, you gettin' all sappy on me now too Isaac?"
He pushes my hand away, "yeah yeah, call me what you want but weve been friends for the last 3 years. This place will be a lot lonlier without you to fuck with."
"Aww, look at you two actin' a fool as always," isabella smiles tucking her arm around mine, "I'll miss seeing you two acting like this once you graduate and leave us behind."
"Ahh, Bell we talked about this," i say scratching the back of my head, "I'll be visiting you guys when I've got time. I'm not gonna just ditch you and run off to my big job like that. You're both like family to me."
"Look whose being the sappy one now," Isaac says, laughing as he ducks away from my hand as I reach out to swat the back of his head.
"Yeah, yeah. There you go, turning my words on me like usual." I laugh pulling them both into a hug. "For real though, I don't plan on just ditching my best friends like that. Now lets get to class before teach decides we need after hours lessons again."
Isaac lets out an exaggerated groan, "a slave driver i tell you, she must've been reincarnated from a plantation lady. With how often she makes us folk stay after."
"You can say that again," Isabella says as i open the door.
I chuckle following after them into the classroom. I take my seat next to Isabella, Isaac on the table to our left.
I glance up at the clock, strange, I think as i look around the room, I swear that was working just fine yesterday. I pull out my phone shrugging. 8:15, odd the morning announcements should've came through by now.
A sudden commotion by the windows draws my attention from my thoughts. "Does anyone else see that?" Kyle says pointing towards a bright azure light as it spreads through the sky.
"Yeah, I see it," I say moving from my chair. "It doesn't seem to be doing any structural damage to the buildings, so maybe its from some kind of solar flare?" I say glancing around the room.
A studious girl looks up at the light, "I've never heard of solar flares changing the color of the sky like this, besides this weird light covers from the ground up. Which would mean the radiation was tearing through out atmosphere."
"I figured as much," I say sitting down. The light flows into the classroom and continues onwards. A sudden bright light flashes, burning our eyes a muddled collection of pained grunts and terrified screams fills the room. I reach over grabbing onto Isabella and take her to the floor covering her body with mine… then everything goes black.
