Chapter 4 - Silver’s Gift

Silver was sitting in the common room on the floor next to his now one year old brother Kai. Silver sat there talking to Kai while holding up some of his newest toys. "A-and these are blocks you can stack like this!" He blabbered as he slowly stacked them into a triangular formation.

Kai, with a block in his mouth and no expression at all, stared at his older brother who was busy stacking the blocks higher and higher.

"Haha alright alright Silver, I think Kai has had enough for today," Parthen chimed into Silver's conversation. "How about you and me go shopping together, we can even get you something special while we're there"

Silver quickly stood up and rejoiced "Yes yes! I wanna go shopping!" He beamed while running up to his father.

Perthan took Silver's tiny hand and silently stood there for a moment. Silver stood there looking up to his father with a face full of curiosity, but before he could say anything his father started walking towards their big door with Silver in tow.

Perthan's expression faded from a charming smile to a blank face. As he opened the doors to their house there were two burly men who looked to be in their mid 30s standing outside the house entrance "Good morning Master Perthan" they said in unison.

Perthan nodded back barely acknowledging them as his piercing gaze shot forward in between the guards and continued walking. They walked for what seemed like forever until they got to a building with a stone brick exterior with two large windows on either side of the door. Silver looked up and saw a sign that said "Pearsons Magical Goods." He couldn't understand what it said so he quickly looked back down as he entered the shop behind his dad.

A tiny bell sound could be heard from inside the shop as Perthan and Silver entered the shop. There were shelves with swords, shields, rings and bracelets as well as a few other select goods all around the shop with very few patrons browsing around. The amount of people inside the shop was so tiny it could be counted on one hand.

Ignoring the others, Perthan walked up to the man standing at the register. The man had a short handlebar mustache with a sharp jawline and nose.

"Pearson, I presume you have what I asked you for correct?" The man who seemed to tower over the shopkeeper asked without hesitation.

"Y-yessir we have the product you asked for, please let me go fetch it for you Mr. Vesper", the shopkeeper stammered on.

As the shopkeeper disappeared into the back of his shop, murmurs could be heard from all around the shop.

"Did he say Mr. Vesper? That Mr. Vesper?" A woman in the back of the shop asked her companion.

Perthan ignored the murmurs and Silver seemed to be blissfully unaware of the situation. Silver just stood there slowly swaying his body back and forth as he waited for the shopkeeper to come back, while his father just stood there holding his hand, suddenly having a more serious tone about him.

Soon after the shopkeeper returned from the back room and handed a sword over to Perthan. Perthan roughly grabbed the sword from the shopkeeper. It had a pitch black oval shaped handle and guard with a black wooden sheath with a wool lining. He slowly unsheathed the blade and after a minute put it back in it's sheathe.

"Once again Pearson you bring me exactly what I asked for, you're a good man. I'll make sure the higher ups know what you did for me" He said in a confident voice. He put money down on the counter without bothering to count it and left the store, as everyone's eyes were on him and Silver.

Perthan walked back to his house with Silver in one hand and the newly acquired sword in the other. After a few minutes of walking they reached their house and walked inside.

"Daddy I thought you said I was getting a gift!" Silver pouted "All we did was get that!" Pointing at the sword in Perthan's other hand.

Perthan got onto one knee and formed a smile. "Of course I got you a gift silly!" He held out the sword for Perthan to take. "It might be a while before you can wield this but this sword is for you. One day when you're old enough I'll train you on how to use it, that way you can become a strong man that follows in your dad's footsteps!" He said with a proud smile and a puffed out chest.

"With this I can become like you?" Silver blurted out

"Of course you can!! With this maybe you can even come on one of my trips!" He gushed.

Silver lightly gasped "I can come with daddy?! When can I learn? I wanna go with daddy!" Silver was jumping up and down, bursting with excitement.

"Now hold on sport, like I said it will take some time before you can use this, but when the day comes I promise to personally teach you alright?"

Silver's bright smile slowly faded as he realized he couldn't learn right away. "Oh alright…"

"Oh don't be like that Silver, cheer up buddy. How about this: to make it up to you we can play whatever you want all day!"

Silver's face brightened back up. Nodding his head Silver grabbed his dad's hand and dragged him over to Kai's location as they all played together. Not once did his smile fade again that day…
