Chapter 10 - Aftermath

Silver stood still, staring at the flames that were burning his house to the ground. He watched as he struggled to breathe as smoke filled his lungs, but he remained unmoving. Minutes passed by until a group of men and women in dark blue cloaks flooded the scene.

They surrounded the house as blue energy emitted from their fingertips. They moved their hands in unison, forming complex patterns confined in a large circle. It took them mere seconds to complete, as water immediately started spouting from the center of the circles. They kept repeating this pattern as the water hit the fire from all directions.

Despite the constant barrage of water, the flame didn't seem to die down, as it burned whatever was left of the manor. Eventually, the fire started to die down as there was less and less materials to burn.

The fire was finally put out after half an hour had gone by, all the servants still standing from a safe distance as no one dared approach it yet. Silver couldn't wait though, when it looked like the fire was completely out he ran towards the house.

He fearlessly ran as fast as he could through the entrance before any of the maids or mages could react. He made his way through the burned down halls until he had reached the origin of the fire; his parent's room.

He burst through the door and was met with a horrific sight. The room previously inhabited by his parents had completely turned to ash. He rummaged through the debris hoping to find something, anything, left of his parent's room.

After digging up all the ash his blackened tiny hands could handle, he quickly started to check other rooms. Unlike his parents' rooms, some of the other rooms still had parts untouched by fire, but still, most of it was full of ashes.

He kept checking room after room, but there were still no signs of life. Eventually he stumbled upon his own room and, to no surprise, it was mostly burned down. However there was one small corner that was completely unscathed by the fire. It was his drawer that had all his clothes, but most importantly, it's where his sword gifted to him by his father was kept.

Tears slowly escaped his reddened eyes as he stumbled over to the drawer and held onto his sword for dear life as he collapsed onto his knees. After some time passed, a man in a blue robe entered his room.

"We finally found you" he said, ruffling Silver's ash filled hair "It's dangerous here we gotta get you out." Without waiting for a response the man picked Silver up and carried him out of the house. As Silver's adrenaline died down he started to cough uncontrollably because of his smoke filled lungs.

The man sat Silver down next to one of the maids as the man got down one knee in front of him. A translucent energy started emitting from his fingertips as he created another circle filled with patterns right in front of Silver. As he finished casting, blue energy slowly started slowly seeping into Silver's body.

Silver instantly stopped coughing as he felt his lungs clear of all the smoke. "That ought to help you a bit" smiled the blue cloaked man. "You shouldn't have run in there like that little guy. You should let professionals like us handle it."

Silver stared at the ground, too ashamed to look him in the eyes. "I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself" he whimpered. The man nodded with a smile and said "Don't worry about it kiddo, we'll take care of everything now" and turned back and joined up with the rest of his team.

Silver didn't move. He stared at the ground, hands grasped around his sword.

Silver sat in a chair next to Kai in a bright white room, standing in front of him there were two older men. "I'm sorry to break the news to you but… unfortunately it seems both your parents have died in the fire" said one of the men in a monotone voice.

Kai seemed unresponsive as he didn't know what was going on, but Silver wept. He already expected this but no amount of foresight made it easier to hear.

"Considering what your father did for the kingdom, we'll be taking care of both of you until further notice to pay respects for his untimely death" he said. "You may call me Marshal Holwren. Now I'll give you both some time to yourself. Starting tomorrow we have a few things we'll want you to do" he added as he left the room with the other man in pursuit.
