Chapter 13 - Cody

To say getting injected with dark magic was a pain, was a huge understatement. It had taken all of Cody's mental focus, effort, and stamina, just to appear normal for those two minutes. Casting the bright barrier had done him in though. The dark element or "pure" injection from this was way different from his normal dark element.

His was made of water and bright, so it had already been lesser than most people's dark elements. Bright after all was bright. Although they didn't talk about it, all surviving duo mages had bright. It was the only element they could use without side effects and contributed very little to the dark element. But its combo effect still caused a dark element which slowly killed them.

This stupid concoction though was a piece of every element. Water, earth, fire, sky, and bright forming a "pure" dark element. Every time he mentally tried to separate it out he'd get two elements separated then on the third he'd lose his hold on a previous one.

This led to his current situation. Both Connor and Blazestar, another CIA agent, were looking down at him. He lay there like a dying fish gasping for air. Good thing Blaze had arrived when he did, otherwise Connor would have likely died. Wait why was he worried about Connor of all things! I'm delusional and dying Cody thought, fantastic.

"Hey Lavalilly," Blaze had tapped on his ear piece. Great the tech loving hermit was with him. It wasn't like Cody had anything against her or Blaze, he just hated other's seeing any kind of weakness from him.

"Who's the healer for this district? One who know how to deal with duo elements." Blaze asked. Even if he couldn't hear her Cody could imagine Lavalilly giving a way to wordy answer.

"Mmm okay got it, Skystorm, 48 VintaView rd." Blaze muttered.

"Wait that can't be right." Said Connor "That's my house."

"You have a family member with a sky healing element?" Blaze asked. Connor didn't reply.

"You can walk right?" Blaze asked Connor as he picked up Cody off the ground. Connor nodded and followed Blaze to where he had a truck parked nearby.

"Here" he said opening a door of the truck and handing Cody to Connor. He then ran back to the building. Cody shut his eyes. Every inch of his body hurt. Gosh darn it, tears leaked from the sides of his eyes and he jammed his teeth together to keep from making any noise. It felt like the dark element was slowly shredding up his insides.

Cody heard footsteps and opened one eye just in time to see Blaze drop a tied up Yammado's in the back of his rusted red pickup.

The sound of the truck's engine started up. Cody felt it start to move but wasn't paying too much attention. Having a fast death sounded far better than an hour or two at this point.

The truck bounced on a pothole and Cody could legit feel his insides tearing apart. He let out a slight whimper like groan. It was possible he might have even passed out for a second or two.

He could feel Connor stroking his head and saying something that he couldn't follow. The road seemed to go on forever. Each tiny crack in the road felt like a monstrous valley.

Finally after what seemed like forever the truck stopped. Just leave me here thought Cody. A nice still place sounded great. However Connor picked him up again and started walking somewhere. He lifted the edge of his eyelid on the left side. Great back at Connor's house. Maybe now they would leave him in a nice still area.

Oof something cold and hard against his back. Must be a table. Seemed like a logical answer anyway. Okay he would take a table. A bed might have been nicer though. Although at this point whether something was hard or soft was not his top concern. He just wanted to stop moving.

A hand pushed back his eyelid. Kyle? It was kind of hard to make out his face for some reason. Why couldn't they just leave him alone? He wanted to sleep or just exist. Preferably in a quiet still place.

Cody tried again to focus on the five elements making up the dark element. One separated, two separated, separating two was like second nature to him. Two he could do in his sleep. Three separated; hey cool he'd managed three. The fourth and fifth one, he just had to get them apart. He got them a hair apart but then they slammed back together again making him gasp slightly. Focus he thought keeping the other elements stable. The pain will stop if I just manage to separate them. He focused again on the earth and fire elements. Apart, just go apart already. A hair, a smidge, a cm, they were slowly going apart. Shoot! He lost the fire which immediately slammed back into the earth.

It would have been fine, he could have tried again, but he lost control of the other elements with that slight mishap. All five of the elements slammed back into a dark element. Cody felt like cursing as a wave of darkness swept over his entire body again. This time he couldn't even think straight and everything went black.
