The next morning Kaylee woke up with the resolution to find the other people with supernatural abilities. The days seemed to be going slowly and gradually, nothing important the first week. She thought of how ironic it must be to get abilities abruptly and decide to find out more about it also.
Hence the questions she had that morning were very simple, but also not that plain. They were a lot and would take forever to even get an answer to one of them. She took a small notebook which was on the wooden cheap table which had her computer on top and grabbed a casual blue pen. She quickly flipped over the cover and wrote some of the questions which troubled her.
Why did I not get the powers earlier?
What kind of weird voodoo would make my powers disappear?
Where are the girls who have powers?
How can I meet these girls?
And where the hell can I even get a book about these things?
As she was about to continue the writing experience she was cut out by her grandmother who swung her bedroom door. Boom, the door hit the wall behind it as her grandmother looked like a cop trying to find illegal activities in the room. Kaylee was caught unaware and was startled as she stared at her grandmother who was mostly looking across the room. She perused through Kaylee's room then looked at Kaylee and asked in a very serious tone. "Did you see that coming?"
"What..... grandma? Why would.......? Oh, forget it." Kaylee replied as she moved her hands to and fro trying to grasp whatever her grandmother just did.
Her grandmother smirked and then held her hands together as she asked, "Do you feel okay, today? Is your fever still high?"
"No grandma am fine now. Am gonna go to the library today and read some books. You know I have to enter DAU..... an all. It's a very good university, grandma....plus where am I going to get the opportunity again."
"Okay, sweetie. You go to the library, but make sure you don't go around acting like a shaman and cause trouble. Also, carry some water with you.... you know in case you feel.... feel the emotions of other people. And you're caught unawares although am not even sure water helps......." she said while staring at the floor trying to avoid eye contact.
She then turned back and walked out of the room that she was barely in as she looked around the floor. Kaylee's room which was just in front of the stairs had been cramped up, as every other thing seemed to be extremely close to it. The bathroom which was to the right side of the room had also been confined. It was a blue painted door with a copper-plated handle and had the words 'Bathroom' woven on a mitten which was stuck onto the door.
There were wooden sticks in a circle as they made a straight fence for protection from falling to the stairs. She stared at the room to the left which was meant to be the guest room but they barely had a guest and it was always left empty. The room had a pink door with a royal copper handle and had dust and spots all over it. She sighed heavily and looked at that the old archaic Egyptian carpet beneath her feet. It had been a long time since she cleaned the upper part of the house and she felt really bad about it. But she decided to clean the room on her day off, or just let Kaylee clean the upper part of the house while she cleaned the lower part.
She thought for a few minutes before screaming at the top of her lungs, "HEY KAYLEE. YOU KNOW IT BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE THIS FLOOR HAS BEEN CLEANED....SO WHY DON'T YOU HELP ME CLEAN IT WHEN YOU COME BACK. I MEAN IT IS REALLY DIRTY. PLUS WHY DON'T HELP THESE DAYS? PLEASE DO SEE YOUR FUTURE SELF CLEANING THIS FLOOR. IT'S IMPORTANT AND...."
"Grandma am right here, you don't have to scream. My lord grandma..." Kaylee uttered as she walked out of her room and gazed at her grandmother who was walking down the stairs.
Her grandmother who had wrinkles all over her face smiled brightly as she looked back at Kaylee who was frustrated and mad.
Both of them knew that they were simply joking with each other (apart from the cleaning part) and they both loved it. The amazing togetherness of the family although small, was understanding and had a homely spirit.
Kaylee's grandmother went downstairs and took her jacket as she went out. She bid her goodbyes to her granddaughter and told her to be careful. Come home early. And to wear something girly. Kaylee went back to her room and threw herself on the fluffy bed as it made a creaking sound. The creaking sound made Kaylee sit up straight and think about the library once more. She got ready and snatched her one-sided bag which was on the kitchen counter stuffed some pencils inside it and took the house keys. She left the house and locked it then took the keys and gently left them in her beloved bag.
She turned to walk away and immediately saw it. The huge white cast, how terrible she was walking, and the squinting of her face which just proved the fact that she was indeed in great pain. It was Anna her neighbour. She had gotten the cast as she was running towards Kaylee. Her face looked haggard as her black eye bags could be visibly seen from a mile away.
She was standing on her perfectly trimmed lawn with a mug in her hands. She looked around at her flowerbed and the constantly spinning water hose. She wore a beige robe and had tied it with a knot at her waist. The robe had white stripes which could be seen vaguely and a huge lace of brown at the ends. Kaylee slowly walked towards the fence in the middle and yelled, "Hey, Anna."
Anna tilted her head towards Kaylee as she tried to move across her lawn to the fence. "Hey, Kaylee. Are you okay? I saw you the other day and you looked kinda sad."
"Yeah, am fine now."
"Really, coz I talked to your grandma yesterday..." And her words were cut off by Kaylee witnessing another episode. Anna's beautiful lawn and flower bed would be destroyed by a couple of street dogs running wild. Anna was inside her house and she was not able to witness the atrocities of the dogs. And she would not be able to stop them until they brutally murdered all of the flowers. Inevitable, inescapable and uncontrollable.
What could Kaylee possibly do to stop the vicious animals from attempting murder of beautiful roses and pink flowers? Her daydreaming was interrupted by Anna who was still talking about how she met a handsome doctor at the hospital she was in.
Kaylee looked at Anna and gently tried to ease her way into the tough conversation she was in, "Do you.... mind if we talk.....later? Umm. I have to go....."
"Oh... Okay then... It's just that I rarely get to talk to people unless it's work. But. don't worry about it. We'll talk later. You can go. Am so sorry. Really,..."
"No, no please don't. It's fine. I enjoy talking to you," Kaylee answered with a considerable rise in her voice tone.
Anna smiled gently but it could be seen to Kaylee that she liked having a friend. Hence Kaylee continued, "You know..... maybe I and you could meet together sometimes. I mean if it is okay with you? I would really love to hear your stories. They sound interesting...."
"Yeah, would you? I have lots of stories to talk to you about. And am sure both of us would enjoy ourselves if we had a girls night... Or you know just some fun girly stuff we could do, like getting our nails done, getting a hair cut. The cool stuff teenage people do...."
Kaylee smiled and so did Anna who had felt safe and comfortable in front of someone in a long time. The beautiful, warm moment was disrupted as noisy dogs could be heard barking and haranguing on the streets increased as people criticised the local authorities. The dogs barked loudly and chased each other endlessly, as they reached Anna lawn, she had already done whatever was necessary by locking the gate of her home.
She then bid Kaylee goodbye as Kaylee walked away from the seriousness of the situation she was just in. She was glad. Glad that she stopped a minor catastrophe but she wasn't that buoyed to meet with Anna anymore. She had tried to care about people's feelings and she had done it. She got friends, she can see the future and warn people beforehand (which proved to be a bad thing rather than a good thing). But she thought it was merely enough. Getting close to someone indefinitely was something Kaylee did not want to deal with.
She waved goodbye to Anna and started her journey to the library.
