Rain was standing outside the principal's office of liberty high school while playing with her t-shirt and rhythmically tapping her foot, as her habit was of nervousness and fear.
Sophie was sitting across her on the bench in the corridor while students, teachers, and parents pass them. As they both were transfer student from Scottsdale, Oliver and Kat needed to have to talk with the principal of the schools, to inform them of the transfer and as they were still governed by the foster care for at least a year or two, they also need to give them the details about that, Rain thought this was weird, telling everyone about them being the foster kid and now everyone in her year would know that she is not part of Finn family.
Rain turned and tried to watch inside the cabin and as the curtains were closed couldn't see anything and sigh looking back at the floor, what are the discussing for so long? Are they going to reject me? Are they not satisfied with my scores? If only they would let her inside. She looked at her sister who was swinging her legs while making paper birds or something and thought, at least she is having fun while sitting.
After 20 more minutes finally, Kat and Oliver came out and told Rain that she was accepted with a big smile, Rain was relieved and happy and so was Sophie.
"Now can we go and look in the school? They have big classrooms than the middle school," she said to which Rain laughed and nodded.
"Oh, okay. Then you girls go and check out the school while I and Oli will get the schedule and some things clear with the head." Kat replied.
"Things clear?" Rain was confused.
"Well you are supposed to join the extra classes from next week and we need to get you a map and also get you all the information about clubs and scholarship programs of this school." Oliver replied, "Now you guys move on, meet us in 15 minutes near the car, okay?"
"Yup sure" Sophie replied. But Rain was confused over what to do, Steven just a few minutes ago said to stay together as it would be easy to save everyone for both of them. Should I go? Or should I stay? Sophie was trying to drag Rain which she was failing and after thinking for 2 minutes, Rain decided it was a good idea to stay with Sophie and if she sees any shadow near, then start running in the opposite direction.
And they walked. After 20 minutes Rain and Sophie were out in the parking lot standing alone near their car after done roaming and checking out half the campus of this school, Kat and Oliver were late.
After 5 more minutes, they both came and then they were off to home, to distract herself Rain was reading all the vouchers and a booklet of all the clubs of the school she could join while Sophie was trying to look and navigate through the school map stating in between, what kind of rooms and things were there in the map.
While Kat was seating with her head on the back of her seat looking at busy Rain. She wanted this only, she was feeling complete but it was too much work, telling the principals about the children was easy but then the part where the foster care system may visit the school for checking on kids was mentioned, both the principals flinched and pressed on, "Why?" they asked as if not knowing, at that moment Kat and Oliver both felt like some kind of criminals.
Rain would soon start attending high school and maybe staying out, partying at night and whatnot, while Sophie would have to concentrate on her studies as she needs to catch up on her grades as to join her classes in high school in 2 more years. The packed schedule will not stay packed for Kat and Oliver for too long, from next week they will get free time more.
At first, they both were scared of handling a kid and a teen but then as the girls started winning their heart they decided to take them but it's just been 4 days and Kat was feeling so tired of this constant work and pack schedule, Rain did help in many things at home, but they still needed help in navigating in house, and Sophie had a habit of forgetting things here and there. Rain needed space most of the time, while Sophie would come in your room or your study while dressed or doing something to just see you or hug you. Both the sisters were a full package of everything.
And Kat loved them but was tired. But was sure about the fact that if even God now asked them if they would like to go back to their normal life with no children, Kat would not think for even a second and say no, because, her home feels more like home, her life has become happier, she now feels like a woman with a motive, a motive of giving her kids all the love, happiness and facilities they deserve and slowly her eyes got heavy and she finally closed them while sighing.
Rain looked at Kat hearing her sigh, "She is not used to work and run all the time." Oliver remarked while looking at Kat through a rare view mirror.
"Oh…" Rain didn't know what to say and looked at the innocent face of Kat, she realized, she was more than comfortable here, from past 2 years she had been in constant defense mode and suddenly here she is now sitting as a child, just because, she is unknowingly trusting this woman to be the adult and parent for her, without even realizing she gave this man her hand and smiles like she used to give to his father.
Its been only 4 days of living with them and 3 months of knowing them and Rain was feeling at home with these people, it was not only Sophie, but Rain too wanted to stay with them forever, it was just her mind telling her not to call them Mom and Dad, not to trust, to love but with knowing all that her heart was trusting them and even loving them.
With a smile and teary eyes, she finally said, "Sweet dreams, Mom." Sophie turned hearing this, while Oliver looked at her through rare view mirror and it didn't matter to her, she touched Kat's hand and then let go. This was going to happen, Sophie thought while smiling and looking at the map again, and Oliver finally felt happy.
After reaching home, Kat was surprised to see Rain and Sophie helping her more than before, more surprised by Rain's efforts to talk to her.
Rain was arranging the table cloth while telling Kat about the psychology club she was thinking of joining as soon as she enters the college, while Sophie was just sitting on the chair while reading about the club Rain was talking about. Kat thought she is including me in this discussion wow, does she wants my opinion? Would I seem rude if I tell her my opinion, and still she said, "Only one group?"
"No, NO, I have 4 more in my mind but I am confused about them but I am not confused about psychology." Rain replied still arranging the cloth.
"Nice…" Kat thought what to add more with nice but Rain started again, "I feel like joining the reading club like 80%, same with the drama club. And also I would love to join the language club, it is good to know different languages but I want to join the science club too. It's so hard to select"
"Attend all of them for a week then decided." Kat replied and took the pot filled with a tasty smelling pot of curry with cooked wheat dough inside, to the dining table and put it in the middle and smiled, "I did the same when I was in my high school."
"Yeah, that a great idea." Rain replied thoughtfully.
"What is a great idea?" Oliver asked coming inside the kitchen and sat on the head of the family chair, "Hmmm, it smells so good…" as he was going to stick his finger in the curry to taste it, Kat slapped his hand, "Don't do that, that's gross." and he mocked her as she turned which made both Sophie and Rain laugh.
After putting the plates, glasses, and spoons on the table fancily, all of them started eating while sitting and discussing the clubs Rain could join.
Steven watched the happy family through the kitchen window and turned smiling, and looked at his watch, it was 7:11 pm, still, 6 more hours till I ruin your day Rain, he thought, sliding aside the broken fence part, ducked and crawled through the narrow opening while sliding it back in its place he stood up.
He'll have to tell Rain about this fence opening, he noted and walked towards the front side of the house where Ace, was sitting in his car.
