Steven was standing beside the glass door, in the shadows of Finn's house, with both hands in his pockets he leaned backward on the wall. When is she coming, he thought. He looked up to see the stars and saw the open window from which curtains were sometimes flowing outwards, this must be Sophie's room, the trees were rustling softly in the wind while Steven waited for Rain.
Rain silently walked down the stairs barefoot and crossed the kitchen door for the glass door in the hall, slowly sliding the door open, she steps outside. As soon as she stepped outside, the wind started to play with her hair, and a chill ran down her body as she was in her nightwear.
Steven saw from the shadows a thin figure of a girl emerging from the now-open glass door and he still didn't step out, he saw her hair flowing with air. She was wearing a sweatpant with a crop top, and in no time noticed her fear on her face and decided to step out of the shadows.
While still looking at her watch which was showing it was 1:17 am, Rain started to hear soft steps coming from the shadows, she started to take some steps back as fear settles in her heart and then saw a face emerging from the shadows with bright green eyes and she sighed.
"You scared me!"
"Did I?" Steven smirked.
It's 1 am and he is still arrogant. Without any more delay, she asked, "So, what do you want to tell me?"
Steven looked at her for a minute while deciding on what to tell her and what not and then started, "You going to stand like that while I tell you? It may take 1 hour at least to make you understand everything." He remarked.
"Yes, if I feel comfortable I will sit, or kick you. Quit your cocky attitude and please don't waste my time." Rain snapped.
"Okay… Chill, Tiger." With his hands up he replied sarcastically.
The Finn's backyard was big enough for a pool, but they didn't have any, instead, there were a lot of flowers and plants bed arranged beautifully in a row like fashion towards the left side of the glass door, while steven and Rain were on the right side, below Sophie's open bedroom window, a huge Neem tree was just outside-facing Sophie's window, which was making the atmosphere cool.
Steven leaned back against the trunk of the tree while a swing was just to his left, swinging lightly in the wind, the swing was attached to the thick branch of the neem tree by Oliver, when Sophie told them that she loved to sit on the swing.
Rain, feeling uncomfortable took a few steps near Steven and stood in one place while crossing her arms over her chest. Just a few feet in front of him.
Steven ignored her stubborn attitude and decided to just let her do whatever she wants, with a long inhale and exhale he started, "So, you know I am steven reed…"
"Yeah," She replied while cutting him.
"Okay, You know I am here on a mission and an assignment…"
"To protect me. Yeah!" She grumbled while cutting him once again and rolled her eyes.
"Okayyy. You also know that I have powers…"
"No, you have some kind of trick…" Steven didn't let her finish and with a whoosh sound he disappeared and was behind her, he pressed his hands over her mouth and hissed, "If you don't let me finish after this, I will gladly go and tell my idiot supervisor that you are good on your own, while the shadow that is following you everywhere will tear you and your family into pieces and win."
He removed his hands and walked in front of her, "Also, I am not supposed to use my power here, I can only use ranged teleportation so, it is up to you if you want to believe me or not." he blankly stated, while walking back to the tree trunk and leaning on it again.
Rain was shaken with the sudden encounter with the 'Powers' until this, she was sure he somehow made her believe or did something to her and she thought he vanished because of that, it can't be true, she was sure, but now she was sure that this was true. She walked towards the swing and sat on it while looking up at the sky.
"So it is true..." She muttered and looked at Steven who was looking at her too with a bored expression, " My parents were murdered by someone with powers." She bitterly asked.
He nodded while his expression changed from bored to concerned.
"I won't be able to catch them right?"
He nodded again and added, "Without our help, yes. You won't be able to catch."
"Why would you help?" She was looking at him with sad eyes and he felt sorry for her.
"Your Mother was one of us, Rain."
Her eyes grew big in surprise, while tears started filling up, at the mention of her mother, while her mother's kind face flashed in front of her, it was her mother's first day of work that day, she was so happy, she thought.
She was one of them, she was one of them, words started dancing in her mind, she can't be, I never saw her doing anything like… like Steven. She doesn't even know Steven, he could be lying.
If he is not then does that mean… Her thoughts stopped and she looked up at the stars again and then when her tears were back inside she looked at him, "Does that mean…"
"Yes, you are her daughter, you could be like us," He confirmed the thoughts in her mind. But she didn't feel anything, she cant woosh herself somewhere, she needed a car for that, but… she felt special many times like she was in the wrong world in between the wrong people.
"Are you okay? Steven dragged her out of her thoughts and she nodded.
"Can we talk tomorrow?" she mumbled. "I am getting a bad headache."
He nodded with confused eyes and watched her jump down from the swing and walk back inside. With a deep sigh he too started to walk towards his crawl space thinking, Waoh, she is only going to take 5% information at a time with this strong reaction, he ruffled his hairs while he was out of the crawl space and thought, man I am in deep shit.
Rain slowly walked up the stairs while still thinking, Mother was one of them. How can I not know that? They killed her, even when she was one of them. Why? Why are they sending someone to save us now? Why was she killed?
Her head was throbbing hard and as soon as she opens the door of her room she ran and slide inside the blanket on the bed and started crying.
"Why didn't you tell me, mommy? Why did you leave us?" She sobbed.
If mom was one of them and dad was not, how did they meet? Her head started to throb less, she slowly falls asleep.
Sophie watches the moon from her window, "A beauty." She mumbled While the conversation between Rain and Steven was playing in her head.
"mother!" Came her whisper while her tears were staining her T-shirt. After letting herself weep a little more, she looked at her white bunny t-shirt and sighed while looking at the stains. She got up from her chair and walked to her bed.
She was up at 1 to pee, she didn't intend to hear Rain and Steven's conversation but she heard the same whooshing noise which was near her parents when they died and ran towards her open window from the bathroom and peeked out to see Steven behind Rain with his one hand over her mouth.
She thought of screaming for help but then he started to walk away and after about, a minute Rain followed him towards the tree and sat on the swing that was beside him and was about to look up so Sophie ducked and sat near the window to scream at any point Steven misbehaved with her sister.
In this, she heard what she didn't imagine, she was shocked and kept hearing while silently weeping inside her room. As soon as Steven said, " You could be like us." A chill went down Sophie's body.
After 10 or more minutes, Rain got inside and Steven left too, but Sophie stayed looking at the moon and thinking about the time when she saw a bird fly.
She was with her mother sitting, drawing and cutting shapes of bird for her project, when her mother teased her, about her drawing which was not looking like birds, to make her mum quiet, she with all her strength made the paper birds fly, her mother was first surprised than proud and then happy. She even bought ice creams for all of them that day.
"Mother!" She mumbled.
Am I like you? She thought.
