Rain didn't sleep the whole night, a tornado of thoughts was racing through her mind while some heavy emotions were hitting her heart like a bullet penetrating her skin. She was in pain though without a wound. She cried the whole night and wasn't aware of the sun rising and spreading its rays through the curtains into her bedroom.
"Rain, are you okay?" Kat asked while softly knocking on her door.
No reply.
"Don't you want to eat food?"
No reply.
With a sigh, Kat walked back downstairs and into the kitchen where Sophie and Oliver were waiting, She is not coming?" Oliver asked.
"She is not even replying." Kat sighed and sat beside Sophie, "Did you guys fight? Did you know anything?"
"I…" Sophie remembered the incident of tomorrow night and thought she might be sad because Steven was going alone and she was stuck here but she can't say that to Kat and Oliver, " She was crying yesterday because of mom. She was missing her." Although it wasn't a lie, Sophie still felt a pinch of shame in her heart.
Kat tried once again after the breakfast and again after launch was served and after they were done but to no result. Sophie tried multiple times too but wasn't much of help. Oliver said that he will do something after he is back from the office but it was too long of a time and Rain hasn't eaten anything since yesterday night.
The day went by and Oliver couldn't do anything as well, after midnight, Rain crept out of her room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen as she was hungry and opened the fridge to check if they have anything to eat, to her surprise, a voice came, "Should I help you in heating the food." It was Oliver.
Rain turned towards him and saw him sitting on the dining table with his laptop open and glasses on, he was looking at her with kindness and a calm face.
Oliver knew that Sophie won't be a trouble as she was very young when her parents died but Rain would be a tough job as no one could give the same amount of love a mother would give to her child. He waited for Rain till midnight while doing his office work, he knew that she would come down to eat, and now she was in front of her.
Her little face all puffed up and red with all the crying, eyes puffy with a hint of tears in them, she was looking at him in shock, and he with love and affection.
After a moment, "No," Rain murmured.
She looked down, she wanted to eat, she was hungry but she wanted to be alone, she wanted no one around her, but here he was. And after all the kind and generous things he has done for her, if she can't look at him like a father she can at least pretend to call him father and be respectful to him, she thought.
He got up and made her way towards her and smiled, "Let me help you." Saying he bend down and take out 2 sealed containers and opened them on the counter.
The air around Rain suddenly was filled with the tasty smell of mix spiced rice and veg potato rolls. Her mouth started watering while she looked hungrily at the food which was in the oven getting heated. Oliver chuckled after looking at her face and sat down on his chair once again.
"It will take 5 minutes," He remarked.
Slowly Rain made her way to the dining table and sat on the chair opposite Oliver. She looked at him, and he ignored her and pretended to be busy. It was hurtful to see such a pretty face all puffy and red. But more hurtful was the fact that she was closing inside and not letting anyone near her. But feeling and love cant be pushed on to someone, so he was giving her time while increasing the amount of patience and love towards her.
The oven pinged and Rain got up with an excited jolt, Oliver took out the food and put it into a plate. Rain sat on her chair waiting for food, while Oliver served her water, spoons, and finally food. He watched her take the first bite slowly and then hungrily stuffing her mouth.
" Is it good?" He asked chuckling. She nodded without even glancing at him.
He took out another plate from the cabinet and served himself the food, Rain watched him confused, "You didn't eat?" He took his first bite and moaned while nodding.
"Why?" She asked.
"I wanted to give you company," He stated while eating and checking his work on the laptop simultaneously.
"I am hungry too," Sophie exclaimed while entering the kitchen.
Rain looked at her in surprise, it is midnight why is Sophie hungry? While Oliver got up and starting serving Sophie food on a plate and Sophie eyed the food hungrily.
"One for me too Oli." Kat smiled coming into the kitchen.
After everyone was served, they all sat eating at midnight, Rain was still confused while the other's hungrily started eating.
"Why are you all hungry." Rain asked while her voice was still small from all the crying. Oliver shut his laptop down and looked at her while Kat and Sophie looked at her as well.
"I wasn't hungry," Sophie replied.
"Same." Kat smiled.
"Was waiting for you." Oliver winked.
Tears started filling Rain's eyes, she looked down at her food and sniffed. They all looked at her and Sophie said, "It was not our plan, we were eating and dad said that we should wait and we all were not feeling much hungry at that time so I and mom nodded, but to not make you feel weird or bad so we decided that dad would message us once you are down and we will come one by one."
Kat hushed, "Sophie!!!" and Oliver laughed. Rain looked up at the laughing couple and Sophie who was looking at her pleadingly and giggled, "she is a bad secret keeper."
Kat, Oliver, and Rain laughed while Sophie childishly yelled, "No, I am not!"
After eating they all went up and Kat stopped in front of Rain's room, "You know, you can ask me anytime to be with you, I would not mind." She said anxiously.
Rain looked at her and nodded," I will try that." She smiled while Sophie connected her and Rain's hands and said, "I want to sleep in your room today."
Kat laughed and left with Oliver, while Rain and Sophie went inside. After about a minute, Rain was on her bed looking up at the ceiling and Sophie was doing the same.
"What are you worried about?" Sophie asked.
"Different things." Rain replied.
"I can help you. If you try and tell me." Sophie looked at her and Rain looked back at her and smiled.
"I don't think I am anything like mom, Sow." She finally let the most burning thought out of her.
"What do you mean? You look like her, you sometimes act like her, I don't miss mom more because I can see her in you." Sophie replied.
"You think so?"
"I know so!"
Rain looked back at the ceiling, "Then why can't see any special power like her in me? What was her power anyway?"
Sophie tensed up as an article she read before came to her mind, if a mother has brown hair, then both the children could have brown hair but the possibility is only 10% while the possibility of one child having brown hair is 50% and the possibility of no child having brown hair is near 10%. She thought, if genetics works like that, then would that mean either Sophie or Rain would have power but not both of them, and as Rain was so happy about it, Sophie thought that Rain should have the powers at that time.
But now while sleeping beside her sister, she remembered the paper birds and thought... what if...? the thoughts were broken by Rain who turned towards Sophie and asked.
"Sow, do you think you have power?" She asked her full of curiosity but Sophie tensed up and started debating with herself if she should tell her or not.
"I don't know," She replied, that was technically the truth though she felt like she is betraying her sister.
"Same..." Rain sighed, "I... today, I cried because I felt useless... Sophie what if we don't have power? I can't feel anything in me... what if..." Her voice trailed off while she again turned and started to look up at the ceiling.
"What if we don't have power? What's wrong with that?"
"What?..." Rain turned, "Sow, that would mean we can't enter that world, don't you want to see that world and be part of it?"
"No, I am happy here," Sophie murmured. Which made Rain shocked.
