Chereads / A Demon Princes Rise / Chapter 7 - A Short Rest

Chapter 7 - A Short Rest

Moving into the city and leaving the crowd behind Eduard advanced, onlookers and passers by turning to look at him. Eduard's' impressive height set him apart from the crown standing nearly four inches over the tallest nearby person. Eduard looked around for some appetizing food and a room, though it seemed that in his demon form he didn't need it he should still be able to eat it, and though sleep seemed unnecessary a bath would be nice. Looking for an inn he walked down the street. There were shops selling weapons and armor but looking at his cloak and his sword he chuckled these were more than enough. Seeing a sign for the nightingale inn he walked in through the door.

Opening the door the smell of drunkards and dirt assailed his nostrils, shaking his head with a chuckle he moved inside, the sound of drinking and partying was heard from within. Sitting down at the largest unoccupied table, Eduard threw a gold piece on the table and called the nearest bar maid, seeing the gold piece on the table she eyed him with greed and lust shaking his head telling her to get him their finest food and leave him alone, the server left the table disappointed. Eduard knew the services these skimpily dressed girls provided for well paying clients, not long ago if he had money he would have pounced on the opportunity to bed one of these pretty servers but now he looked at them with contempt. He was a demon of royal descent there was no reason why he would need to waste his time with these inferior women. He was too prideful to even look at them.

The warm light of candles and the fireplace bounced around the room but for some reason the table was a little darker around where Eduard sat. eating his warm steak and fine wine, he lessened to the near buy mercenaries talking about the recent reports and news they had heard.

"They say there is some elven noble girl passing through the area." one of them said

"Yeah followed by a pack of soldiers, I bet" a big mercenary with a large sword said

"Of course, of course." the other mercenary said back, "they are way out of our league." all the mercenaries around the table chuckled.

"I hear monster attacks have been on the rise these last two days." another one said

"Yeah this town's elder said some nonsense about a great evil being awakened or something." one of them said with a chuckle

"A addle brained fool" another chimed in and a chuckle came from the group.

Turning away from their conversation with a smile on his face Eduard chuckled, some people don't know how close they were to death. Looking back at his food thinking of finishing it, suddenly he sensed a hand approaching his waist, some peasant reaching for his sword. Turning and grabbing the man's throat Eduard looked him in the eye.

Anger filled Eduard as he looked at this thief "reaching for my sword, worm?" his voice growled out filled with malice.

All sound in the inn seemed to stop and everyone turned to look at the scene.

"N..n..noo sir,'' the man said fearfully, looking around the bar for help, everyone turned their eyes away from that fearful and pleading expression.

Eduard felt disgusted looking at this sniveling thief in his grasp, standing up to his full height he looked at this thief from under his cloak and grinned, increasing the pressure in his hand and fingers the thief's face turned from red to blue. Eduard frowned and with a sickening snapping sound broke the fools neck and with one motion and threw him out of the tavern. Taking a seat once again he went back to his food.

The silence in the tavern was thick, some stealing glances at Eduard and the door which the thief's body had been thrown out of, and the smarter bar goers looked back at their food in silence. the quiet in the bar did not last as the whispers turned into drunken banter, and that into shouting. The drunken atmosphere replacing the grim it seemed everyone had forgotten, yet the mercenaries who were once talking, were now gazing at Eduard's cloaked figure. Standing up from his meal, Eduard walked towards the counter, the crowd parting around him. Arriving at the counter he tossed 3 gold on the counter and ordered the best room.

Walking up the stairs towards the room he just rented Eduard was gone from sight.

"Could you take him boss?" one of the mercenaries said to the biggest one.

"I couldn't even gauge his strength let alone fight him, I fear he's on a completely different level as if he was looking down on everyone in this room." The biggest mercenary said to the other ones around the table.

Arriving at the door Eduard pushed it open stepping inside he saw a luxurious bed and desk, alone with a room with a tub for soaking, filled with water. Locking the door and walking into the side room Eduard moved towards the tub, removing his clothes, sword and cloak he placed them beside him as he sat in the tub. Rubbing the ring on his finger he looked at his statistics.

Seeing a slight increase in all his stats he smiled, it seemed getting used to his body and killing some humans had helped him improve slightly. If it kept up at this rate his power would be overwhelming he thought smiling even wider. Using fire magic with one hand he heated the water till it steamed, since awakening his demonic blood it seemed he was immune to most heat, it seemed the ring was right. He could still feel the heat but all heat over a certain amount felt the same staying comfortable, scrubbing himself with a cloth, dirt and grime washed away leaving himself looking spotless. Looking at the black runes and symbols on his chest and shoulders, and back, Eduard wondered, did all demons have these or were they marking's only the Asmodians had or were they something else that he couldn't even guess at, deciding that things he needed to know he would know, Eduard leaned back in the bath relaxing.

He was thinking about these last few days and his conversation with Lilly, why was he moving north with such vigor, just because she said so? No definitely not mostly it was out of curiosity and also because he felt like it was right, he was supposed to head north and he would figure it out there, plus Lilly sounded like a beautiful girl from the voice I heard and that sort of servant sounded pleasant. Standing up and drying himself off with fire magic, Eduard got dressed wearing everything again, without even looking at the bed he walked out the door, passed the hallway down the stairs and out the door of the tavern.
