Chapter 16 - The Suitor from Afar

Yavia's patience were wearing thin. From the time she had first opened her eyes from sleep, until this very moment, she had been rushed and and readied for the suitors to come. And here they were, filling her halls in a curving line that stretched down the main road and out of the city gates. She wanted but one man, and these boys could not change her mind. She hated this part of being a princess, all she wanted was to be alone with Nobaru, and instead she was demanded to be here for the entertainment of these young men who only wanted a part of kingdom to add to their own.

It had been three months since their arrival and the last time she had gotten to be alone with him was the morning on the balcony. Since then, father had needed him for every little task, needless to say it was very aggravating for her. Father had promised that Nobaru would be her's after tonight for as many days as she likes. I just had to do my best to enjoy myself, and put on a brave face. She knew how he really felt though, father would never allow her marry whom she wanted. No royal family of any country would allow such a thing. It was unheard of. Only mother sympathized with her.

The suitors came and went, one by one they introduced themselves, only to eventually realizes she had no interest in them. Oh she exchanged pleasantries, was polite, and as hospitable as possible, but in truth, they all bored her. Her mind was Nobaru, her eyes and heart for him only. The trail of suitors never seemed to end. Before long the King had called for a stop, and for the remaining suitors to come back after the sun had started its descent in the sky.

The doors closed as the final suitors made their way out of the castle, leaving Yavia to her peace for a moment. She breathed in deeply and sighed heavily, her head was pounding and back ached from sitting for so long. She just wanted to ease her hunger and rest. She leaned back lazily and in chair and closed her eyes.

"Your food my beautiful Princess," said a soft deep voice behind her, making her almost jump out of her seat from surprise.

"Nobaru," she collected herself quickly. "Where did you come from? I didn't hear you approach.". She smiled brightly at him, doing her best to mask her surprise, and failing miserably. She could be the picture of elegance in front of anybody except him. Somehow he always caught her off guard.

"Here is your food my lady," he set a plate of dried meats, cheese, and fruit before her. "I picked them out myself."

"It looks delicious Lord Nobaru," she said smiling up at him. And truly it did, ever piece of fruit and cheese was cut fresh and of the finest quality. The meats must've been the choicest in the kitchen. And a glass is of the finest sweet red to wash it down. He really was something special, she thought to herself.

Some time later the suitors came began their attempt to court her once again, and once again they failed in their endeavor. Before long the sun was setting and the last suitor made his way towards. Her nerves were on fire and she needed a long hot bath. She just had to get through this last interaction and could dismiss herself to her room.

He stood before her, the vision of a hero among men. Long golden locks fell in an unnatural way past his shoulder, eyes the palest of blues, and a build to match the gods. If she wasn't so sure the gods would never come to this realm, she'd swear she was staring at one. She blushed as she realized she was staring at him.

"Your name kind sir," she offered gracefully.

"Prince Vaalyun," he replied. "I have come a long way from home country of Belarria in hopes of winning your hand in marriage."

"As pleasant as that sound Prince Vaalyun, I must ask, what is it your Kingdom has to offer ours?" The question was standard, but no matter how he replied, the answer would be no.

"We offer the protection of the Gods dear Princess," he replied in earnest.

"You may take your leave, my choice will be announced on the morrow. Take care Prince Vaalyun."

With that she stood and left the main hall, leaving her final suitor to be escorted out by the guards.
