Chapter 19 - The Captain of the Guard

Samiel walked casually down the hallway to the stairs that led to Princess Yavia's private quarters, head held high. From the first moment since the seventh son had been introduced to the Royal Family, he had been suspicious of him. Now he could do something about that, without fear of retribution. To say him for not coming peacefully would not invoke the King's rage upon him. That was enough to satisfy Samiel.

He peered up the long winding staircase, something felt off, but he knew not what it could be. As if something deep inside was warning him of great danger, but he knew that to be nonsense. It was just his nerves, he was sure. The tension had been building in his body for months now, and no amount of hot baths, rest, or stretching seem to loosen his muscles. The worst part was the thumping in his skull, but soon enough he had hoped that would all end, and his life return to normal.

He started up the steps slowly and softly, as he did not wish for them to know of his arrival beforehand. But as he climbed the steps, that unnerving feeling had gotten worse, making him nauseated. Something was definitely off about this situation, he knew for certain now. His gut had never lied to him before, and he doubted that it did not either. His steps became faster and more determined. He just knew something foul was at hand and the Princess's life was in danger. He could only hope the cause of this feeling was that seventh son. Maybe he had finally fell into his curse and lost his mind, the poor princess defenseless against his assaults. Yes, that had to be it, he thought to himself as he hurried.

Samiel became even more unnerved as he rounded the final corner and looked up at her closed doorway. The guard stationed outside looked uninjured, but deeply asleep, though that wasn't what unnerved him. He still had yet to hear any sounds coming from the Princess's room, and she was never quiet.

He walked up the last flight of steps to the landing infront of the Princess's private quarters and kicked the sleeping guard hard, startling him out of sleep.

"Get up you fool, and if I ever catch you sleeping on duty again, it'll be the dungeon for you," he growled. "Now be gone with you! Go home to your family and I will deal with your punishment on the morrow.

The guard, quickly rising to his feet, saluted the captain and ran down the hall as fast as he could without falling.

"Fools and cutthroats, is that really all they have to choose from for the guard?! Can't I have one decent man to keep by my side?" he sighed heavily then looked at the beautifully engraved doors before him. Putting his personal feelings away, and preparing for any dangers that may propose themselves, he reached out and banged loudly upon the door.

"Princess Yavia, Seventh Son, the King requests your presences immediately!!!"
