Chapter 20 - Confusion

Yavia hadn't seen Nobaru for most of the day, as she lay there waiting in bed, for the eventual summons of her father. But now that he had arrived she couldn't keep her eyes off of him. This was not the man she had brought back with her. Though similar in appearance, he was at the same time very different. His hair was the same shade of onyx, though at least twice the length, his skin even paler than normal, and his body looked more muscled and broader of build. The one big difference were his eyes, once the palest of blues, were now the color of fresh blood.

She was awestruck and terrified at the same time, her heart hammered in her chest. She couldn't speak or move, only stare at him. Her mind was the only thing she seem have still in tact, and by the gods, she hoped it lasted. When had he changed so much? It certainly felt like Nobaru's presence, but this was definitely not Lord Nobaru. She struggled to find her voice, fighting with every nerve in her body.

"Who...are...you?" Yavia finally managed to choke out after several minutes.

This question caught Ares off guard completely What did she mean, who was he? This mortal body looks the same as it always has.

"What do you my mean my sweet Yavia?," he replied curiously.

She didn't know where to even begin. It even sounded Nobaru. A single tear rolled down her cheek, falling off to land on the pendant her mother had given her. She was confused, scared, and suddenly felt very vulnerable.

Ares had caught his reflection in the single tear drop the moment it hit the amulet, realization dawned on him. In that tear drop, he saw what he had once been, in all of his glory, before waking up inside this mortal. Ares the God of Violent Deaths and Bloodlust. Only a few items were given to mortals by the Gods, and this one had Aurora's energy imbued it.

"I see you are in the possession of the Seer's Amulet, one of the Goddess Aurora's finest works," he gestured at her necklace. "That is the reason you see me as you do now, and only you can see me this way. If you were to remove it I would look as I do every other day to. The amulet allows you to see people for who and what they really are. It shows the truth."

Panic became alarm, and alarm became curiosity, as she sat there quietly listening to him. Very little he was saying made any sense to her at this point. Goddesses, Amulets, the truth? What did any of that even mean?

Seeing her confusion Ares sighed with a soft smile. He cupped her cheek in the palm of his hand, and leaned over within inches of her face.

"I am Ares, the God of Violent Deaths and Bloodlust, as your service my sweet Princess," he said leaning in and kissing her softly.

The kiss had broken her from her, almost spellbound, confusion and she pushed him back, eyeing him viciously.

"You're a God?!" she whispered fiercely, her anger rising.
