Chapter 21 - Jephthah and the Ephraimites

The men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and passed over Jordan unto Zaphon, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou not with us, to fight against the children of Ammon? We will join you in burning down your house. "

But Jephthah said to them, "My people are at war with the Ammonites. I called you but you did not pay attention.

When I saw that you would not help me to fight against them, then I went up against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me victory. Now why have you come to fight against me?"

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim, and took it. (For the people of Ephraim said, "You men of Gilead, who live in Ephraim and Manasseh, have forsaken Ephraim!") -Ephraim.

If an Ephraimite tries to flee and desires to cross over, the men of Gilead will ask,

"Are you an Ephraimite?" If he says, "No," 6they will say to him, "Shibboleth."

But if he says, "Sibboleth," because he doesn't speak it correctly, they will kill him on the other side of the Jordan River. At that time, 42,000 Ephraimites were killed.

Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then he died and was buried in his hometown of Gilead
