Chapter 3 - A very normal emotion

Blood dripped from between the dragon's wide grin, as its body emitted a searing heat that warped the air around it. Not to mention the half eaten corpses that lay behind it, followed by the stench of the surroundings.

The sight would be enough to make a grown man faint.

"Little human, you have no strength to fight against me, yet you still dare to stand in my presence. I commend your bravery, so I will entertain you. How about this.

"Come to the crater in the forest you humans call Danger Forest, and we will fight there." The dragon's mouth curled into what could be considered a smile, though it was ghastly and gave one goosebumps to look at.

There were clearly ill intentions in that smile.

With those words the dragon took off, looking forward to the fun time it will have in a while.

Leaving Jeffrey thoroughly confounded.

He didn't understand why the lizard, actually the flying lizard, asked him to come fight it.

Yes, Jeffrey didn't like the fact that the flying lizard destroyed the village, but perhaps there were some circumstances behind it. Jeffrey wasn't one to poke his nose in someone else's business.

Not ever since the incident.

So Jeffrey had no reason to fight the lizard- or so he thought.

At the corner of his eyes, he caught sight of a small figure that lay where the lizard was eating. Though charred and mauled, Jeffrey could still recognise her.

Her smile and soft voice still lingered in his heart.

Yes.

It was the poor little girl in the village, Lily. Jeffrey couldn't forget her, in fact, it was the only person in the village which he could name and recognise. Which was actually quite sad.

Her father died in an accident resulting in her mother falling into social withdrawal, leaving little Lily to try to provide for her and her mother.

Jeffrey would usually give discounts and freebies to her when she came by, her smile always melted his lonely heart.

A strange feeling overcame Jeffrey. He had never felt this feeling before.

It boiled beneath his skin and made him shake inadvertently.

It was rage.

Jeffrey had never been truly angry before. He was always easygoing, though a bit emotionally detached.

It hurt his heart to see Lily in such a state as if his heart was crushed under the weight of a mountain.

It was at this moment Jeffrey "understood" the words of the lizard.

That scaly bastard came to provoke Jeffrey and lure him into a trap. This was a common baiting tactic that even an idiot could see through.

Living on the frontiers next to the simply named Danger Forest, named by simple settlers.

Jeffrey faced attacks against his farm regularly, especially since his farm is the closest to Danger Forest.

Jeffrey had seen this behaviour before, in fact, he fell into a trap laid by green midgets one time. Luckily, his father saved him before the midgets got to do anything.

Since that time Jeffrey had always come to analyse the situation before taking the most logical action. This probably also contributed to his quiet personality as well.

The "normal" and logical action would be to ignore the lizard and Jeffrey was planning to do so, but that was no longer an option.

That flying lizard bastard would pay.
