It had been six days since fighting the lizard.
The first order of business was to fix up the fences surrounding his farm and reset his traps.
Because of that damned fire lizard, rodents and other pests have been getting in and due to the rotting livestock, they made a mess of the place.
During that time Jeffrey made a new fence layer around his farmlands out of Forest Trees and even cleaned up the corpses of his deceased livestock.
In his living room, Jeffrey placed the dark egg near the fireplace as he had done on previous days. It seemed to already be near hatching. And today it showed signs of breaking out of its shell.
*Crack*
Jeffrey, despite being a mature adult, was very excited about the hatching of this egg. Staring at the egg, he was giddy as he watched the egg crack and break.
After about a minute, the dark egg lay in pieces on the floor and out came a wet little chick. Smaller than the size of Jeffrey's own palm.
However, something seemed a bit wrong. Why did a white chick come out of the egg?
Perhaps Night Crows were white when they first hatched?
"It's plausible, I mean I've never seen a baby crow before," Jeffrey reassured himself that this was fine.
"Chii, chii." the little white chick made some sort of chirping noise, possibly seeking some sort of special attention.
Now came the next hurdle. What to do with a newborn chick?
Does he just feed it? That seemed right.
Placing some wheat grains in his hand Jeffrey offered some to the little chick.
However, contrary to Jeffrey's expectations it hopped into his hand and settled down in the grains of wheat, seemingly entering a sleeping posture.
Jeffrey's straight face became even straighter.
…
At the Village
Three lightly armoured scouts and one ragged clothed man hopped off their horses. The man in the ragged clothing was riding with one of the other men. They each bore on their tunics an insignia of a white circle with little blue stars in it, representing their identity as part of the Moonshine Kingdom.
"Godamn, the stank here is pretty bad innit," one of the armoured scouts commented as he surveyed the wreckage where a village once stood, with decomposed corpses littered about, the scavengers already having eaten their fill.
"Mhmm, indeed, looks like we didn't come here for nothing, eh buddy," The one who seemed like the leader shot a glance at their guide before once again speaking.
"Ok, I say we search around a bit and look for more concrete evidence of a dragon."
"Ehh, but this is concrete already, there's definitely a dragon around here, let's just head back" the other scout whined.
"Dereliction of duty has severe consequences, and I'm sure you know what those are,"
At the mention of consequences, the scout that just whined felt a shiver.
"Alright, alright, let's just get this over with." the scout caved in.
Glancing at the guide the leader spoke up.
"You, where did the dragon go and where should we checkup first?"
The villager jumped, he didn't expect to be called out so suddenly.
"I-I don't know where it went, b-but there is a guy who might know…
"if he's still alive."
