Chapter 13 - Gateway

It had been two thousand years since Regent Titus was betrayed by the Kings. After his death the three kings were stripped of their Immortality and died soon thereafter. As the years passed, different people tried to take control of the land, but none of them could.

Then, a group of men decided that it was time to unify Graiigreald. They where Lord Failer of Lion's Point, Lord Hannibal of Dragonrock, and the young Lord Pierre of Eagle's Nest. Pierre was only ten when he became lord after his father committed suicide.

Instead of committing a child to war, Hannibal and Failer sent him home to be trained and educated. When word spread that Failer was to become the first King of Graiigreald, many cheered, and many became enraged. Among those enraged was Victor the Vicious of Draconia. He and his brute Ivan the Brutal declared themselves the rightful rulers and thus declared war on Failer and Hannibal.

When Failer was crowned king, he recieved the Lion Sword used by the first Lord of Lion's Point, King Bonaparte. When Hannibal became Lord of Dragonrock, he recieved the Dragon Sword used by King Mao. Hannibal swore fealty to Failer, and they began amassing an army. The newly dubbed Chief Victor the Vicious was doing the same, but somehow at a much greater rate. Failer knew that he would need a group of knights to lead his army.

Peter was in his late twenties, a simple farmer in Symphonia. Failer saw something in him, he saw a leader of men, an inspiring general.

"Peter, I am King Failer. I want you to be the first member of the Knight's Company."

"Your majesty, I'm no warrior. I don't even know how to use a sword."

"We will train. I will teach you everything I know and you will be a force to be reckoned with."

"I hope I'm a fast learner."

Peter went with Failer and began training. Eight other men would join Failer: Leo, Henry, Daniel, Christopher, Simon, Nicholas, and Steven. Failer went to each one to personally recruit them. Nicholas was already well trained in swordcraft and was assigned to train the others. They where each knighted and given time to go back to their homes and be with their families.

The newly dubbed Sir Steven went to his home in Mudstop Village near Fort Mudstop and told his wife the great news.

"I can't believe it, your a knight!"

"I know! We must celebrate with the family."

"I'm afraid it will have to be just us, our families left for Sillsing. They said they didn't want to be part of either side and Sillsing was deemed a free city by King Failer."

"Well, that's alright. I'll go out a get some firewood, you can start preparing for our feast."

"Be careful."

"I will."

Sir Steven went out into the woods to collect firewood. His wife, Auriela, whistled quietly as she was chopping onions for her soup. A chill went down her spine. She didn't think much of it, but she looked out the back window to see if it was something in the woods she may have heard. She didn't see anything so she turned around to she a large man standing over her, smiling.

"Pretty little lady. I'm gonna have fun with you."

The man grabbed Auriela and began to force himself on her. She cried and tried to get away, but the man was much stronger and she was not able to get away. He beat and tortured her until she bled out over her soup. Steven heard her cries and rushed back to his wife, but he was too late. He held her in his arms and tears streamed down his face. Then anger swept over him. He left his home and asked every man who saw the man who killed his wife. Once he had an idea of where he was going, Steven chased the man into the woods.

"I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL KILL YOU, I'LL KILL YOU, I'LL KILL YOU!

Steven tackled the man to the ground and began to beat him. He did not think during his fight, he just felt. His anger made him powerful as he tore at the man's flesh, ripping him apart. He kept ripping, tearing, mutilating. He tore the man limb from limb before he ripped the man's heart out of his chest. The man was still alive when Steven crushed the heart in front of the man's eyes. Steven looked through the man's belongings to see who he was with, who sent him, anything, I didn't matter to him. He found a letter in the man's pocket and read it.

"Pretty wife, Sir Steven. Signed Chief Victor the Vicious."

Steven dragged himself home to bury his wife. The townspeople saw what he had done to the man and called Steven "The Furious." He set out to Lion's Point to warn Failer that the war had begun.

As Sir Steven was riding to Lion's Point, Victor was marching towards Symphonia. Sir Christopher went to his home and took a small legion of soldiers with him after news of Sir Steven's wife reached him. Victor attacked the city, he and his men riding giant wolves. Sir Christopher took charge and ordered the legion to their battlements. They took to calling him the "Commander" for how well he commanded his soldiers. As Victor broke through the gates, Sir Christopher was waiting with his legion and they would not give an inch. They fought for over three hours before Victor was forced to flee. The people cheered for Sir Christopher and his legion as the protectors of Symphonia, but they had to get to Lion's point to prepare for the battles yet to come. The war had now begun.

Failer gathered the Knight's Company and Hannibal to the war room.

"Victor has struck twice, and he struck strategically," said Failer

"So what do we do then?" asked Sir Peter.

"We fight back."

The Knight's Company gathered their soldiers and went to Rodnest. They believed that Victor may attack there. When they arrived they were ambushed by Ivan the Brutal. The stories people told about him were true. He stood as a giant over them, each blow strong enough to cut a man in half. They could not withstand the onslaught and had to retreat to Eagle's Pass. They were again cornered by Chief Victor, suffering greater loss.

The Company, Hannibal, and Failer tried to fight but they couldn't win. Victor was playing the long game. Victor knew that he would not be able to fully take on their army in open combat. Victor seiged the cities, burned the fields, and occupied the forts. Failer's last ploy was to draw them out to an open field battle.

Failer gathered the Knight's Company and Hannibal to prepare the march towards the Misted Lake. Victor had agreed to the battle, believing that their was no chance for them to defeat them. Failer tried to send spies, but Victor would send back their heads with notes attached.

"Your majesty, I am afraid that I must return home. My court mage, Mortimer, informed me that there was an incident with a cult. They called themselves the Cult of Cromwell, can you believe it?"

"Well, if it's true then you have some nasty people on your hands. I understand the concern for Dragonrock, go."

Hannibal took his men back to Dragonrock, bringing the army to half the size it was. Failer gathered the Knight's Company and was informed by the soldiers of Sir Henry helping the wounded, Sir Peter convincing one of Victor's men to turn, Sir Leo risking his life to save the people from Victor's savages. He knew he picked the right group of people.

As King Failer and the Knight's Company led the army to the edge of the hill above the Misted Lake, Chief Victor the Vicious and Ivan the Brutal arrived on the other side. Failer looked into Victor's eyes and swore that he would defeat him. As the two armies prepared to clash, a young man stumbled out of a cave below them. Chills went down Failer's spine when he saw the Wolf pommel on the sword the young man carried. His mind quickly devised a plan to recruit him so he would die in battle. Failer knew that his time as King would be short lived if this young man lived. He knew the Prophesy. The Unifier was here.
